The Hunger Games!! I'm pleasantly surprised at the story for this movie. It didn't hesitate to be darker than most young adult stories, and the pacing for this movie is quite nice. I didn't feel bored at any point, and it would rank pretty high in movies that everyone should watch if not for one MAJOR flaw.
The camera work and editing.

A lot of reactors miss this: Peeta can't just kill the careers in their sleep because of the immediate cannon firing when the tracker senses their heart stopping. He would never get several people killed without them waking. Plus...he's Peeta. He's not going to murder anyone if he can avoid it.(These movies don't do his character justice.)

it’s a hard plan it would only work if they were all close to each other and he had two knives stood between two of them stab them both in the heart then run over and do the same as fast as possible to the other two, but you’re right. it’s pretty close to impossible with the connection of the canon firing when the tracker stops sensing a heartbeat.

@@VerowakReacts I feel like it could be quite difficult because of the action but there’s been way older movies than this where a character loses a leg and they could do it fine, or hired an actor with that disability and not show it until the end but I guess that would be a lot more extra work. I don't think the camera work is bad. It's an artistic decision made by the filmmakers to up the tension and cut out violence that wouldn't be appropriate for a PG-13 movie. It's ok to not like it, but that doesn't make it trash.

I know I'm late to the party, but when Haymitch says "Embrace the probability of your imminent death And know, in your heart, that there's nothing I can do to save you" just breaks my heart. The kids from the poor side of District 12 have to sign up for grain and oil to be able to survive. They need to sign up once for each member of their family and what it does is put the name of the child in the reaping for each time they sign up. So if a child has 3 other family members, the first year , they have their names in 5 times (4 x for the food + their regular entry). The following year, they have their names in 10 times (4 times for the food x2 years + 2 'regular' times.). The third year, they have their names in 15 times (4x3 years + 3 regular times). You get the picture. This is why Gale's name is in 42 times instead of just once per year, because he has 2 brothers, a sister and his mom. That means most of the chosen tributes come from "The seam" (The really poor part of the district). They are starving, they are small, they are tired, have no energy or muscle mass. No sponsor would take them on. So for the last 23 years, Haymitch watched 46 kids die because there was nothing he could do to save them. And then, he had to go back to the district, year after year, and face the families and loved ones of those 46 fallen tributes. For the last 23 years, he has to live with the memories of having failed to save those children. I don't even live in that world and I want to drink. When he sees that Katniss and Peeta have heart, they have spunk, they have muscle mass, he sees that maybe, just maybe, there is a chance he could bring one of them back alive... no matter how slim that chance may be. Sorry, this is one of my favorite series of all time so I tend to get overly passionate. Thank you for reacting to it

The Hunger Games books are written in first person present tense, so rather than events having already happened to someone else (like with the more common third person past tense), these books feel like events are happening to me, right now. I think it adds a new element of tension and stakes for the reader. I personally believe this is the reason for the artistic choice to shoot this movie with a shaky cam, because it is an attempt to capture this same idea of the audience feeling like they're right there in the action as well, just like in the books.

Shaky can was not only to show the chaos of the moment, but was necessary during the children slaughter scene because children were being killed brutally and that kept the movie from getting a more adult rating. That wasn't bees or a quick arrow, it was slashes and stabbings with mostly the younger children being killed. I'm glad they made the choice they did, seeing that clearly would have lessened my enjoyment of the movie.

Hollywood really upped the love triangle for these films. Katniss sees gale like a brother and otherwise she surpesses her emotions because shes so focused on surviving. @@clover2739 there is an extra kiss between them added in the next film - I won't say so I dont spoil for the reaction/out of courtesy. They also cut large sections of the many intimate moments between katniss and peeta, especially in the next film. Shots like these are some of the only things that cause me motion sickness (I can do VR just fine most of the time, for instance). A wider shot with shaky cam is fine, but the stuff they do here goes overboard. Luckily the other films did this stuff better.

I totally get why you don’t like the shaky cam, but calling it ridiculous is not cool. It isn’t to YOUR liking. That’s all. Your proclivity to getting motion sickness and the unfortunate fact that you must react while watching it on a very small screen really have little to do with the decisions that were made in making this movie. No Director or DP makes their artistic choices based on anything other than the big screen in mind. If you take a while to really pay attention to the action sequences you will start to understand that this had to pass PG-13 standards. All of the red tape that must have been slashed through to get this incredibly dark themed, marketed to adolescents, film made is pretty overwhelming. I think they did a wonderful job in trying to convey the chaos, primal, horrific terror that children were being subjected to with using very little actual violence onscreen.

Book info: The districts 1-13 (who provide most of the needed resources, such as food, fuel, energy, clothing, technology) rebelled against the Capitol 74 years ago and lost, with 13 being destroyed via bombs. The Games are punishment for 1-12. In the beginning it was more of a punishment, but over decades it became a the sporting event of the year. Families can get extra rations (of low-quality food) from the government, but in return they agree that kids get more pieces of paper. Due this poorer families have bigger chance to loose their kids. Most victors, like Haymitch, are traumatised from their own games and having to see the kids they train die pretty much every year (there can only be 1 victor). Due to this many of them are alcoholics or addicts to num the game. The Capitol also often forces them to prostitution. Districts 1, 2 and 4 have a better relationship with the Capitol than the others, which is why they have career tributes. Katniss lost hearing in of her ears during the game. The mines are active for only the first 60 seconds of the game. The careers recruited the young kid from District 3 (technology and engineering) to reactivate them in order make the circle around the goodies. Thresh, the guy from the same district as Rue, just wanted to respect Katniss for what she did to the little girl. The mutant dogs were originally mutant wolves that were based on the dead tributes. Katniss only had one arrow left in the books, and she had to choose use it either to kill Cato (who being teared up alive by the dogs/wolves) or use it as a makeshift support to keep Peeta's cut open leg straight. After the games Peeta had to get a leg amputated and Katniss got her ear fixed.

They broke the 3rd book into two movies, like harry potter and the final book in that series, a!omg with divergent series, twilight, etc.. Its totally unnecessary and are kind of cash grab films. Catching Fire is easily the best in the trilogy. The first one does a great job of setting things up and its enough to get one invested in the story, but I agree about some of the camera work. Like you, I find the camera technique as used here to be a detriment. In regard to much of Hollywood trickery -- if the audience notices the trickery, and it's not ironic, then you probably failed. The "shaky cam" technique has its place, even here, but if it's too broad and/or too frequent, it takes you out of the movie and into the technique. Conversely, steady-cam shots can do the same because it's too smooth and entices auteurs to shoot superfluous "oners". But hey, tastes differ. I'm very old school (literally), and think that very often in storytelling, if you make the effort, less is more.

I take it you already saw these and you don't approve of the handheld camera being used to keep their rating low?

I'm not sure what you mean? Are you saying I saw these movies before this reaction? I don't like the shakey camera because it makes me motion sick. Too much of it and I have to look away from the movie so I don't vomit

I hate when people start these movies and never finish them lol not talking about her here, just talking about the other reaction channels that watched just the first movie or the first two movies over a year ago and still haven't finished it to this day haha makes no sense to start something and never finish it.
