When she reached the stage in her career where she was offered her own weekly TV series, she happened to mention to her friend, Paul McCartney that she was having trouble deciding what was suitable as a theme song and she told him what was being considered. Paul said, that's not you. I'll write you one. He wrote, "Step Inside Love," specially for her as the theme song for her new series (and of course it was another big worldwide hit).

Cilla Black died on 1 August 2015 at the age of 72, after a fall in her holiday villa in Estepona, a town in Spain. The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart; it was her first number one album. In 2017, a statue of Black commissioned by her sons was unveiled outside the Cavern Club's original entrance. Wikipedia.

Listen to "What Good Am I?" by Cilla. It's a huge, belting ballad and when she sang it live at the London Palladium in 1967, she received a standing ovation that went on for several minutes. It was transmiited live on TV and, as far as I'm aware, there is no recording of that performance, which is a great shame. However, the record is fantastic!

A scout for English record producer of the Beatles, George Martin, discovered "Anyone Who Had a Heart" when Warwick's version took off in the United States, suggesting to Martin that the song would be a strong UK single for Shirley Bassey. However, Martin saw the song as a vehicle for Cilla Black, the Liverpool vocalist whose star potential had yet to be realized despite her association with The Beatles. On 7 August 2015, following Black's death, the single re-entered the charts at No. 41. Petula Clark also recorded "Anyone Who Had a Heart" in several foreign language versions for the international market. Clark reached No. 7 in France with "Ceux Qui Ont Un Coeur" in the spring of 1964, then No. 5 in Italy with "Quelli che hanno un cuore"1 that September. In October 1964, Clark reached No. 1 in Spain-for a two-week period-with "Tú no tienes corazón". Petula Clark has never recorded "Anyone Who Had a Heart" in English, feeling that both Dionne Warwick and Cilla Black have definitively rendered the song in its original language. Wikipedia.

Another 60s female singer to have a look at is Billie Davis, She did covers of "Tell Him" , "Angel Of The Morning" "Want You To Be My Baby" etc. Her voice is quite unique and she would have gone on to be a huge star if an unfortunate road accident hadn't interrupted her career. @@playitagainsue As i mentioned Cilla was well loved over here, and went on to have a long career, with her own TV shows. We had a few great female singers over here in the 60s, along with Cilla we had Dusty Springfield, Lulu, and Sandie Shaw. Sandie was a bit naughty when on TV, she would turn her head away from the cameras, which drove directors mad, she was also famous for not wearing shoes when on stage. There seem to have been a crop of little belters about that time - Cilla, Lulu, Judith (normally associated with the Seekers, but she could belt when she wanted to!), and in France, Mireille (who was probably the tiniest of them all). Cilla didn't actually lose the power of her voice in the 70's or later. The 60's songs were big ballads, where she was able to use her voice to its full potential. She rarely did that on recordings or on TV in the 70's and later, but if you went to see her in concert, as I did many times, you would have found that her voice was as good and as strong as ever, because she sang many of her 60's hits, which she belted out, just like she used to. She always received standing ovations.

Believe it or not I remember at the time in England Cilla was accused of not being able to sing, they must have been deaf. Priscilla Maria Veronica White OBE (27 May 1943 - 1 August 2015), better known as Cilla Black, was an English singer and television presenter. Championed by her friends the Beatles, Black began her career as a singer in 1963. Her singles "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "You're My World" both reached number one in the UK in 1964. She had 11 top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart between then and 1971, and an additional eight hits that made the top 40. In May 2010, new research published by BBC Radio 2 showed that her version of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" was the UK's biggest-selling single by a female artist in the 1960s. Wikipedia.

Nice voice, but prefer who the song was written for, Dionne Warwick.

It's a pity that backing orchestra was so loud - Cilla's voice managed to overcome their 'enthusiastic' playing - the studio version really shows Cilla's voice to it's best .

Yes, I think Cilla's voice could overcome pretty much anything. She is just so good 🤩
