The world seems upside down so we're setting up a "sudden homestead" at our new house. We're wasting no time getting in a 3,300 sq ft garden, making plans for milk goats, raising more laying hens and turkeys, ordering a beehive and meat birds, plus more!

If you’d like some random tips from an amateur gardener of almost 70 years, here goes: plant some high Bush blueberries, I wish I had, because they’re helpful with blood vessel health and delish; goat milk is meh, but yoghurt, butter and cheese are fabulous; plant green beans 4” apart in blocks of 4 feet instead of rows, because they’ll be pretty much weed free, pick them young and often; plant some Kirby type cucumbers with net to climb for pickling, because you may not eat a lot of pickles but they pep up various dishes awfully well. Get nets for berries. Ducks weed well without eating your veg. If you plant grapes, plant a rose nearby. Pests that ruin grapes attack roses first. I’ve gardened two continents so far, still learning. Btw, goats can climb trees and jump as well as deer!

Jamerrill, I have to say that your yellow hat comforts me! I *love* how absolutely authentic and just REAL that hat is... So many YT'ers stage situations, plan outfits, wouldnt dare "be like the rest of us." Its comforting in times such as this to see you being just yourself, not putting on airs, or portraying yourself as anything but a busy mama like the rest of us. Just wanted to leave some words of thankfulness... I appreciate you girlfriend! P.S.: My yellow hat is purple, and worn, and dorky, and GLORIOUS!!

Fruit trees 1000%. I feel like they get overlooked a lot but they can be a seriously beneficial thing to have and you only need a few. They even make "collum" versions which are meant to take up less space. Fruit trees are pretty low maintenance. Berry bushes are also a good yard investment, and I know her kids love them. Like trees its mostly just plant, prune and wait. I have so many memories of pears and raspberries in my Grandmother's yard.
@melissaandres764
@melissaandres764 4 жыл бұрын
Vanessa H I remember my grandparent orchard. To save up space when the trees go big enough he would cross them and then get rid of some. Yes exactly how that sounds!!!! He had trees where half would be apples and the other half pears and trees that were half peach and half plum. I grew up thinking this was normal when he was teaching me. The key is matching like seeds. So seeds with seeds and pits with pits.

For our family of 9, 25lbs of seed potatoes is a good amount. You cut each of your seed potatoes so that you have 3 eyes on each piece. You’ll also need to keep up with mounding them once they are planted. I think we mound 3-4 times. I would say potatoes are one of the most time consuming plants. For harvest and preserving, I like to pressure can. I look forward to watching your new adventures ❤️

I live alone now in the city, but my parents live in the countryside, and they keep about 10 hens and two dogs, and that’s it, but they grow a lot of fruits and produce in general. They have like three avocado trees, there lemon trees, some banana trees, tons of guava trees of different kinds of guava, chili peppers, some scallions, strawberries and so on. We live in a tropical country, so seasons aren’t a thing and we can grow food year round and not worry about winter.... for these times, my dad did the same thing: he went out and bought some new hens and some more plants to grow. The land isn’t as big as yours, so we can’t keep bigger animals like goats, cows or pigs. Only hens and maybe chickens and that’s it.

For the old stove, you could “up purpose” that stove by painting the brown part white or gray or whatever color you like. I know there are special paints for the stove. Sending love. ~Another VA Mama

Hopefully, this world wide incident has inspired many people to want to homestead and therefore be self sufficient in CLEAN food. It provides you with food as you need it for your family, but also is not covered in cancer causing agents and your meat without antibiotics and growth hormones. This is a beautiful thing!

Homesteading is a rough life for people as they age. I would have loved it some years ago, but now, not possible. Unless your children stay with you to do the heavy work, it's just not feasible.

We are moving on a parallel path. Our homestead was first settled in the 1860s. The original part of our home is the original cabin and at some point in the 60s, it was added on to and renovated. We are learning to love our vintage appliances and tile, making it work and focusing our efforts and money elsewhere.

We always planted our seed potatoes by Good Friday. They're super easy to grow. Just cut up the potato cutting the eyes and a hunk of potato with it. Plant them about 12 inches apart and about 2" to 3" deep. As they grow you'll need to use a garden hoe to keep pulling up dirt around them as the potatoes underground spread out and might get sunburned (turn green). As soon as the plants start to flower you can either dig around them and get new potatoes or pull the entire plant up and get the new potatoes. You might want to invest in a potato fork for digging them up. You can also use straw to put around the potatoes to keep them from sunburning. You'll need shelves for storing your canned jars. Don't stack them. You also might want a potato bin for storing your potatoes through the fall and winter. The chickens are after bugs. My mom never had a fence around her garden and her chickens just looked for bugs. If you fence around your garden the farmer with his tractor and disc won't be able to disc up your garden unless you take the fence down each spring. Do you have a garden tiller?

Wow. You are truly a Dynamo! Your husband and son work so diligently together. What you have shared with us is so invaluable- I’m currently out of the country- even in this foreign land the people are doing the exact same homesteading either on a big or small suburban scale. I grew up on a Michigan farm in the 50’s and 60’s. Times were either feast or near famine with weather determining our harvest. Again, thank you for sharing this tremendous shift in goals and teaching folks that you can do SOMETHING to secure your family. Garden pots on the porch. Thrifty, nutritionist meals. May God protect you and yours.

You are living my homesteading dreams!! This is so fun to watch and rejoice with you! Awesome memorizing Psalm 91!! When my teenage boys were little I wanted them to know Psalm 121 and and Matthew 6:33 so I would sing both to them every night and they knew those Scriptures by heart so fast! We learned more and eventually they ended up at the Christian school half a mile form our old house and we would read a chapter of Proverbs every morning before school. What a blessing to have access to God’s Word and be able to help our children and ourselves get into our minds and hearts!❤️Praying for you and so happy for you!How about the Lord’s hand to get you to this property perfect for gardens and homesteading just before all this happened! Praise the Lord!

Hi Jamerill, I've had goats my whole life. My 2 cents is DONT get a male goat! Momma can go visit somewhere to get bred. All breeders want to get rid of males, they are mostly butchered for meat because 1 male can service SEVERAL females. They can be ornery, & hard on fences & buildings and there is the odor I'm sure you know about! I have had some very sweet castrated male wethers, but the uncut ones, at certain times, even if they just want the sweet feed you are carrying in a bucket, turn very ornery! (rammed my knee so hard, it displaced it) I would hate to see what would happen to a child. Just a heads up😘 Love your channel!

I grew up with a large family garden. My Daddy used the old farmers almanac to plant by religiously. The seed potatoes we would plant, each seed potato you cut each potato where there is an eye.....each eye of the potatoes will produce a potato plant. Hope that makes sense. We used fertilizer 8/8/8 and 13/13/13 mix and hoed the fertilizer to the seeds/plants. This was before Miracle Grow was around.

In the almanac it says when to plant according to moon cycles...I'm canadian but it was the same thing up here,my dad used to read the almanac and do things accordingly.It was fun way back then eh?I like to see the free range chickens and the kids to pick them up and cuddle them...it teaches them to be kind to animals and to respect them...I love it!

When you cut the potatoes to get a plant for each eye, lay them out on a big board or piece of cardboard in the sun for a dAy or two so the part you cut will dry and seal off. Otherwise, you will just have a bunch of rotten seed potatoes and very few plants.

I don't have the means to have a garden right now. But I talked to hubby about supporting a local farmer and purchase items to can. I grew up canning and gardening with my mom and dad when I was in high school on up. So that is also an option for those who can't have a garden, supporting your local farmers. We actually became friends with them. We would purchase cabbage for sourcrout. I had the best time with my parents and the best memories made with them when doing it.
