On this day in 1957, the Suez Canal reopened to international traffic. Here is a British Movietone report featuring the crisis talks that led to the canal's closure.
A Treaty, guaranteed the Suez Canal, as an International waterway, for all time. Colonel Nasser repudiated this agreement. Mr Selwyn Lloyd, the Foreign Secretary, held crisis talks with Monsieur Pineau, the French Foreign Minister, and the United States Secretary of State, Mr Dulles, to discuss the grave situation. Twenty-three nations will be invited to discuss the re-establishment of International security, on the Canal. In the event of failure, Great Britain is already preparing to counter Nasser's threat, to hold the Canal by force.
