For stability a machine shop must have diverse clients in different market segments. If any one market segment crashes, it should not be enough to take the machine shop down. Excellent advice; also, expanding too quickly, borrowing more and more $, buying more machines, while still paying on the others, is asking for trouble, it seems to me. I've owned a fabrication and machine shop for 24 years. And 2008-09 was the worst it ever was in business. I personally laid off 17 guys in one day! We had work for two more months and my four largest customers cancelled they're POs in one day. It makes you look again at why you started your company and what is more important. We diversified into anything we could get our hands on. Started going to auctions and scraping old cnc machines and selling controls on eBay. Half the guys who I laid off were working for me for cash and learning things they never had to know before. These hard times suck but they build true character. A real company is a family of people working for a common goal to make everyone prosperous. Good job Titan!

08, 09 and ,10 were my first three years off active duty military. I had zero marketable skills from enlisted life and was at a crossroads with myself of staying in the military until retirement or trying to make it in a flooded, slow market. I started changing oil at a car dealership for about minimum wage, and one of our fleet customers ended up offering me a job driving a service truck and doing industrial mechanic work. Now I’m a millwright working for one of the largest chemical companies in the world, giving my family a good life and feeling blessed every day I get to go to work. It wouldn’t have happened without a little luck, hard work, faith in the Almighty and a family that always gave me something to work for. Nowadays I’m looking forward to advancement and eventually retirement from a field that’s done myself and my family well. Hearing your story and knowing what you’ve turned it into motivates me. Thank you for that.

During the 2008 financial crisis, the job shop next door to me had his employees painting and weed whacking. Anything to keep a good crew on. Once business came back, he hit the ground running, but there was no guarantee he’d recover. Don’t ever let anyone tell you “it’s all business” for successful people. I have my own business and it goes way beyond money. You don’t understand it until you’ve lived it, until you’ve built the idea from the ground up. The stress is almost addictive, but it’s the stress of responsibility mixed with authority. I’m calling the shots, I decide every step and the dollars coming in are mostly validation.

I have seen bad times in my life. I have been a welder and a sheetmetal fabricator and worked lathes and mills. I was laid off 17 times in 10 years. I know the fear and the pain. Sleepless nights worried about my family. But I was able to find work to keep going. By working part time at 5 different shops. One would have work another I would work after hours for. then one would run out of work and then another would need me full time till that job dried up. I retired on July 1, 2013 at 65.after working as the foreman for Gallo Winery for 19 years. After working in many different shops. When I retired companies that I had done work for started calling me wanting me to work for them. After being retired for 7 months I returned to work building food processing equipment for two company's and worked for7 more years. At 72 I retired. Your story is great. I hope you know how special you are. I am sure GOD is very proud of you. Thanks for posting this.

Unlike you, we lost everything, with no income once the business went into liquidation, we ended up having to become bankrupt and lost everything we had ever worked for over the last 40 years. No home to live in, no vehicles to get around in, nowhere to store the last fragments of our lives. It was the hardest time 5 years ago, destitute and homeless, we lived on friends and families homes for 18 months. It was heartbreaking and devastating but, we have come to terms with it. Did you leave a Dent?" That is your lot In Life, others will swarm in to take your place, it happens in all Factions of Life, So be prepared for it." Sometimes you are the Insect, and sometimes you are the Windshield...Its better being the Windshield, especially if it has some fresh Fluid in there. No Matter How much an Employer professes he cares about You.. He cares about himself 100 times more. You are just a Cost of doing Business, and that can be Eliminated very Quickly as the Fake Unemployment Numbers can attest. The quicker you understand these TRUTHS about the Employee/Employer Relationship, the Wiser you will Be. Now get back to your Mindless, Meaningless Job, Times a Ticking...Thaaas Right. ; )

08 was tough. I have a fabrication shop, turret press, 2 lasers, 4 press brakes…21 employees. Started 09 with 7 employees, by mid May, 5. Most jobs that did come in had an extremely short lead time, whatever machine we were producing the parts from, I wold ask my guys to stay as late as they could but don’t turn the machine off, come get me. When they left I asked for them to come in as early as they could the next day. I would process the parts that night until they returned. 3 hours sleep n office floor later, back at it. It’s not the good times that define us, it’s the hard times. I was determined that if I failed, it would not be from a lack of effort. Today the business supports 15 families, families that are my extended relations. We got thru 2020 with all our guys, and that only strengthened us. No organization is greater than the sum of it’s parts. It’s not the equipment, the software, anybody can acquire those things. It’s the folks that walk in that door everyday.

That's why we have an instrument called "Kurzarbeit" on Germany. For a limited time the unemployment insurance will pay (60-80%) the wages of your employees when you send them home because there is not enough work. So it's much easier to keep your staff during a crisis like the Corona pandemic. And once the crisis is over, you can restart your company in an instance.

The most difficult thing for a privately owned company owner to do is to realize that their 'Baby' is dying and to avoid dying with it, you have to end it. I've seen many people go into personal debt that they will never recover from in their lifetimes because they just could not let go. It is counter to the American 'get it done' attitude and it is sad to see. Glad you managed to make a comeback!

I am a salesman. Of machinery. Cutting Tools and clamping systems. I live in MÉXICO. Here the Covid impact in business stills. We have to learn from zero. We transformed our machine show room into a machining factory. Not easy transition. But certainly a memorable journey I lost my cars and almost my house. In 2022 we will apply to be ISO 9000 certified. We are working to bring back better times for our team members.

Similar experience here. Sat in my sushi take away looking and thinking of what I've managed to achieve to that day. And it was for nothing. I tried. I failed. I learned from the burn. Not a good feeling. Now I'm working in a completely different field and when I look back, I regret that it didn't work out. But I'm thankfull that I've tried and pushed to make it happen.

And that's why I"ll never leave the place where I'm at. It's not a machine shop, but they kept me employed through the `08 recession and the COVID shut-down. Even though I and my coworkers couldn't be on site, they put together just enough remote training to keep paying everyone. Six weeks later we were back on site, full speed ahead!

In this trade one must be diverse in terms of customers. we have 120+ different customers in our phonebook in a 35 employee business, we rarely see anything near as devastating like what You had to live through. we never had to let people go bc of financial crisis due to the fact we are manufacturing only small runs in a wide range of materials often with surface and heat treatment + finish machining involved. You got to be diverse in this regard, which I am sure You already learned. its a nightmare to keep up the contact channels but very well worth it in the long run.

I saw alot of shops go under in 2008, including the shop I was working at. The owner invested in a Mori 5-axis with a cell just before the collapse. He couldn't make the payment plus he had this weird way of degrading us. He went under eventually and I eventually went on to open my own shop. Keep grinding, keep swinging....just like baseball, you eventually hit one and it was the hit that mattered.

I operated my own business for 12 years and I have a business degree. I learned a lot that school never taught me. First and foremost, you need to know how to sell your product and or hire good sales people. I was terrible at selling, but was great at closing the deal. (That statement alone will confuse about 90% of people who just read it.) My business did not thrive until I hired 3 great sales people who I paid more than I personally earned. Sales people don't really care about their product, they care about making money. (That statement will also anger 80% of people who read it; especially, sales people who are not honest with themselves.) They would line-up-the-business, then I would step in and close the deal. (There are a lot of sales people who can't close the deal because they don't understand the product as well as the creator.)

I do similar work, 2 Haas machines and the usual manual suspects, I can only fire myself. Stay small bro, no pain, 68 yrs old, work is fun! My max quantities are 200 items, that comes at a price. Doing small batches and one off parts is very lucrative as a one man biz. big numbers go to the sweat shops that they choose, or I do the toolpaths and send it out. Small stands the time test, low overheads . That makes survival happen. Plan for the good times, but stay focused, $150.000 for a machine that needs to work 24/7 to pay off someday is a huge gamble. Hiring people is a hard thing to do, you are giving them a job and a wage. It screws folks up to be fired for a reason not related to their work performance. Do not take this badly. You have done great things Bro. And I respect that. Best wishes to you, you will be fine, God bless.

I hope Titan will become a TITAN of industry. And that you will become a lasting player in the US market. Copper is off the charts right now and it's crippling our profit margin. I blame the current administration for this just like it happened in 2008. This may sound dumb at this point, however, there is online market places that still need machined parts. 3D printer upgrades, Quad Copters, 4WD RC vehicles and other ' non esential ' replacement parts. They all will be smaller parts than what you are used to, some may require contacting companies to get licence agreements, some will not be possible to get down in cost to afford to make at all. There are products waiting to be made, the hard part is getting people involved to get the list of them together and deciding which, if any, will be cost efective to make and direct ship to individual customers. You built it up this far, had a big shakedown, now is the ti e to ' upgrade ' the way you do things.
