Is Lovecraftian Horror a form of Inverted Islamic Sufism? And how many of the creatures seen in his mythos can be found in Abrahamic faiths, Middle Eastern folklore and real life.
Partially based on Middle Eastern and North African folklore, as well as a twisted view of Islamic eschatology and Sufism, Lovecraft essentially popularized the notion of cosmic horror, a form of science fiction that states that our world is just one thin veil away from another world filled with unspeakable monsters and horrors waiting to enter ours. #lovecraftian

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age.” -lovecraft

I would argue that the term inspiration is used very loosely here, or even not appropriate, since describing a building doesn't in away affect the final product, the story, you can swap any other description of the building with minimal to no change at all. I would love to see the inspiration for the sunken City of R’lyeh.

This sounds quite likely. As I've said in another comment, the impression I'm getting is that any contact with Middle Eastern myth which Lovecraft had came either from the Bible or from second or third hand sources. Fascinated by the quoted Nights story here - the monster-slaying hero sounds so much like Thor!

Five year-old H. P. Lovecraft's favorite book was One Thousand and One Nights. He had his mother take him to all his local "curio shops" which culminated in him building what he called an "Arabian corner" in his bedroom. When he played as a child he would paint a beard on his face, wear a turban and call himself "Abdul Alhazred". All of that is from his own letters. You'd literally have to be crazy to not think that Islam and Middle Eastern folklore had no influence on his artistic pursuits, but some people seem very eager to die on that hill. That aside, this vid was awesome, thank you!

Makes sense Lovecraft would hold the symbols as meaningful. Madman of his own that he was, he was still a writer, he'd know that symbols are pretty powerful. No magic, but every flag, number, equation, or name is a symbol in a way. Set them to each other and you can move people, break nations, destroy worlds. Bahamut as a nightmare bull is interesting to me given his more popular modern interpretation through the lens of D&D as a Platinum Dragon God of Good aligned dragons. Makes me think there's probably an interesting setting subtext we could use it for in there. Though now I have to brainstorm how it fits with Io and Tiamat. Well, the closer they come to *appearing* to lose their minds. Lovecrafts more knowledgeable characters tend to just start working under rules for deeper truth and are less concerned by limited material views. A chair will matter less to them, save for the placement and correlation to its wider meaning as alerting, distracting, helping, or harming these alien entities that they can't fully comprehend. Will they bathe when they know what watches them? Will they pray if they know what's listening? Will they work if they know its futile? Will they love if they know those emotions might make them a target? Once you remove the human scale a lot of humanity goes with it and makes them look crazy.

This is 5⭐️ work here. Lovecraft’s work is def for entertainment and shouldn’t be taken as seriously as so many do so. Seeing the universe as dark and evil is a twisted view of reality, much in the way how the Christian missionaries in the America’s saw the forests as evil and the native peoples as part of that evil. Much of the understandings of the Vedas, Sufism, and the original Christian doctrines like in the Dead Sea scrolls, where up to 45 books of the Bible were edited or completely taken out in Rome, & also in other religions core philosophies, is being confirmed in quantum physics. It’s revealed amazing realities in the study of the divine matrix or divine consciousness. Gregg Braden’s work is most excellent in explaining what all of these modern scientific discoveries mean in relation to our true reality within our universe. What’s being revealed now is exactly what Nikola Tesla stated, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Thank you for your quality work on this channel. I pass it to as many as I can. Many blessings. 🙏

Another author who was a friend of Lovecraft was Frank Belknap Long and he wrote a short story called "The Hounds of Tindalos" and can be found in the anthology "Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos", but even though it is considered in Lovecraft's cosmic horror, I find that...to me...it is somewhere in-between Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos and the powerful cosmic entities of F Paul Wilson (see my earlier post). The reason is that the short story is able to create in just that one story a different universe. In the story, an occultist takes a drug that pulls him back to an event, a "sin" action that creates two polar opposite forces...Pure and Impure. The Pure forces travel the universe, time and space, through curved dimensions. The Impure (which can be seen in the vague description of the Hounds) can only travel through angular dimensions. In the character's description of what he (by taking the drug to leap him backwards and backwards of space and time to creation, he says, is symbolized in Western religion's Fall, the apple, and the tree. Do, again, it would be interesting to see any correlation as in this video between Long's cosmos and the deeper mystery and iniquity of original sin and the Fall through the lens of "cosmic horror". I highly suggest reading the short story, it is one my favorite short stories.

I just want to state a disclaimer: while most of those myths did actually exist in the middle-east and arabian countries, they were not mentioned in the Islamic religion itself, but actually the Islamic religion told the people to not believe in such myths and believe only in what the Quran and the Prophet says, so if you (as a viewer) really want to know if such things were mentioned in the Quran or Prophetic Hadiths you will need to go back to them and check them out, in case of the Prophetic Hadiths you will need to check the hadiths that are stated as True Prophetic Hadiths, which were unanimously agreed to be true with no lies or manipulation in it. Other than that everyone is free to believe whatever they want to believe.

i definitely agree , but i also need to remark that while the things that were mentioned in this video aren't gods they are a type of jin and we are obligated to believe in them . the islamic religion did not really tap into that because it is a hidden world even though a lot of arabs did make deals with them via dark magic which is why practicing dark magic in islam is one of the most unholy sins as it is a hidden world and we shouldn't go snooping around when it comes to this, So no my friend these things are definitely not myths a lot of arabs pre islam saw the jin and even conversed with them , but maybe they kinda exaggerated how they look just for the sake of it lol

I think a grand majority of the deities and creatures mentioned haven't actually been mentioned in the Qur'an or Hadith Shahih. I know for a fact they don't exist in the Qur'an, and as someone who's familiar with most Hadis Shahih and Hasan, I've never seen these creatures or angels mentioned. Not Dumah, Bahamut nor Falak. If you want to delve deeper into these mythological beings, I'd suggest you search elsewhere, as you won't find them in the canonical scriptures.
@serene-illusion
@serene-illusion 4 жыл бұрын
@@monkeybusiness673 I wouldn't say much of the Arab pagan beliefs were incorporated into Islam, one that I can think of is Ta'aruf (practiced by pagans during the time of the Prophet pbuh), but Islam claims that the act of Ta'aruf was practiced by the early believers of God first and was later adopted by the pagans. Other than that, most of the pagan beliefs that brought its way into general belief like the ones mentioned in this video weren't introduced by the religion but by former pagan believers themselves (Bahamut, Falak etc. You can read my comment on top of this one). One such incident of assimilating pagan belief into Islam by former pagans actually did happen during Prophet Muhammad's lifetime. People began believing that angels were the "daughters of Allah", which the concept was borrowed from their past pagan belief. The Prophet, shocked by this, corrected their beliefs and told to not believe "the stories their forefathers once told". Another similar instance happened much earlier during the Prophet's time, where the nobles of Mecca including the Prophet's uncle asked the Prophet to at least incorporate their pagan gods into the Islamic belief, to which the Prophet firmly refused. People trying to incorporate pagan beleifs into Islam is an inevitability, unlike Christianity which embraced it. I wish I had the sources for these, but sadly the Internet is not the best place to search for these sorts of things. I've recounted these multiple times in books and texts found throughout my country back when I studied religion, all I can give you is my word.

The Cthulhu Mythos is a fictionalized, more pessimistic version of the typical esoteric worldview. The esoteric disciplines of various religions and cultures; Sufism, Qabalah, Gnosticism, Tantra, Alchemy, Astrology etc. despite having differing methods, are all built on one principle: That the universe is ruled by primordial forces that are infinitely incomprehensible to the human mind no matter how enlightened it may be, and that humans, through various rituals revolving around symbology, can interact with these forces for their own benefit. Symbology is crucial here because it is believed that images and symbols (collectively called 'Archetypes') are the only way through which these powers can become accessible to human perception, which is why all civilizations from all ages have come up with different names and faces that represent these energies in ways that fit their respective cultures. Distorted versions of all these notions appear all over Lovecraft's stories. For an atheist, old Howard sure seems to have been obsessed with the occult. Besides Middle Eastern folklore, he also read plenty of Helena Blavatsky, who kick-started modern occultism as we know it, and what he learned from her bleeds through his work one way or another (Fun fact: Her system is known as 'Theosophy'. Notice how many times that word makes an appearance in his stories?). In The Dreams In The Witch House, the theories presented by Walter Gilman regarding astral travel and the secrets of the universe concealed in mathematics are modified versions of actual, key beliefs held by philosophers and qabalists for ages. The ''strange designs'' used by Keziah Mason are called sigils in practical magic and the weird visions that Walter has throughout the story are not completely unlike what someone doing something like, say, pathworking on the Tree of Life or working with the Lesser Key of Solomon might experience.

We're talking about the guy commissioned to write "The Cancer of Superstition". www.theguardian.com/books/2016/mar/16/hp-lovecraft-harry-houdini-manuscript-cancer-superstition-memorabilia Lovecraft was an avowed materialist. @@kryptsoveternity2709 Cool, yeah. I maybe overreacted a bit, just wanted to draw attention to Lovecraft's reading going far, far beyond occult/religion related stuff since I think he often gets very wrongly cast as some sort of wild-eyed mystic. After losing his family home early in life, one of the things he wrote that prevented him from suicide was all of the unanswered intellectual questions that remained for him. All evidence points to him enjoying the arts and sciences, Poe, the macabre, awe, childhood associations, and a sense of the sweep of history. My view of him based on a lot of reading is a sensitive materialist who often wrote outdoors and enjoyed flights of fancy while still being basically grounded in a (mostly) logical, scientific worldview.

Either there's some long, long past connection among all of these cultures, or human beings, as a species have some common notions that explain why two completely seperate people come up with the same ideas fairly regularly.

Since they have started the exaraments at CERN's collider (poking holes in time and space to find life on the other side) hasn't the world become a lot more insane, I mean really look at what's going on. I don't think pricing the Vail of reality is a good idea but the people at cern certainly think they know what they are doing, I feel the longer that thing is operational the closer we come to truly finding out if Lovecraft was right, but buy then it would be far to late. 💉🧬🐉👽👹🕳️

Very interesting, in islam it is believed that mohamed(pbuh) was in a cave(long story) when angel Gabriel came to him, when mohamed saw him he got scared as he thought Gabriel was a shaytan(bad jinn) he ran back to his home trembling of fear, his wife asked him what happened and he told her the story, so yeah it's really interesting that angels in the bible look scary because that explains why mohamed (pbuh) got scared and thought Gabriel was a demon.

It's a new day and one can find both spiritual and religious people working in the nuclear trades like moths drawn to the flames of power. Wool insulates the spirit from receiving sacred grace. As does salt that some priests (foolishly?) circle the temple with. My temple is the wilderness wherein God is found. My church is were few are gathered in a sacred name. I need no building of gold and cedar to enter it's a yonic auditorium and have my prayers mixed with others to be shot into heaven via the phallic steeple. But, that's just one essential difference between religion and spirituality. Both are tools of the soul and neither one is inherently good or evil. "I am God" sais the Elohim. I am Man sais I. Really enjoyed this video, and as someone who was kind of taking a deep dive into the Lovecraft mythos recently I noticed some things that with a step back from Lovecraft´s personal phobias (and unfortunately quite obvious racial commentary) appear in the mythos as a whole. Even as it was intended as a series of horror, not all the Gods there are exactly evil or constantly destructive. While yes some are, there are also those who can be helpful without the sacrifice of sanity, depending on the relationship- such as Yig, Shub-Niggurah, Yog-Sothoth are the one that I can think out of the top of my head that are the closest to the original stories, however these pop up more and more the closer you get to present, since the Mythos technically has no canon. For me personally the true horror and beauty in these stories is not because of a malicious force in the universe, but like the video mentioned an indifferent one. It is a place that functions without the need for us, some of it might care or even want to hurt us, but most just goes about on their own existence. The closest thing that to embodies this view on his work is the main boi Azathoth. The writhing mass of mouths and tentacles most likely sleeping in the middle of the universe that he created from his dream. But he does not know of his creation on account of being blind and an idiot. And once when he wakes up, we will simply cease to exist, remaining maybe as a fleeting memory as our faint dreams in the morning, and Azathoth will be left alone to wander the vast emptiness by himself. (If I believe correctly Azathoth was inspired by Shiva the destroyer)

Thank you sincerely, I'm very interested in folklore and mythologies, but living in Canada, I've yet to hear or be able to study anything of this sort, your videos are extremely well made and thorough. Thanks.

MME is my favourite channel on you KZfaq. Your content is amazing. I'm so pleased to see how your channel has grown, it's very well deserved. I've been a fan from the start. In fact this was the only channel I could bare watching that had a bot voice. (I'm glad it's gone now though) keep up the good work. 👍

I think this is my favorite channel for many reasons, primarily though, I love the Islamic insights. As a grafted in daughter of the Most High, through the Grace of Almighty G0D our Creator's Mercy and the holy blood of Christ, Yeshua Ha'Moshiach, Jesus my Lord and Propitiation, Isa- Blessed Be His Name. The thread of dread and terror runs through ancient Mesopotamian literature and religious traditions like the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates, running down from their headwaters into the Persian Gulf. There's no coincidence that the Book of Job is filled with powerful images, just as ancient Egyptian and every other major world civilization from Sumeria, to China, to the Celts/Gauls/Norse and Mesoamerican Civilizations that were here long before the thoughts of transatlantic travels had re(?)entered the minds of Western European royal houses and their kingdoms. Nothing new under the sun. Solomon proves his observations once more. What I hear in this is a reiteration of the Judgment placed upon the Nephilim 'hybrids', whose paternal progenitors had imbued with advanced knowledge that ultimately got them denied Resurrection within their bodily forms. But their spirits would still exist, since they are half human I suppose, so what if these are the true entities that have still got a major grudge towards the Heavenly Father's Judgment and the humans that have been forgiven? Idk.. but I do know that our Creator's Heart is towards reconciliation and restoration and a world without End. Blessings to you for such an incredibly well done channel. Everything is always outstanding.

I think every culture has myths and folklore each as mind-blowing as each other. Its just what those who hold influence about what we consume choose to promote.

The folklore of Europe still exists in Grimm's Fairytales and oral tradition. But most myth has been subsumed by Christianity. That was done at swordpoint, not olive branch. However there are still those that keep the old ways.

Lovecraft could hardly be accused of plagiarism since none of his work was ever copyrighted. All of his creations, including Chtulu, are public domain. They can be used freely by any artist or writer. Maybe that's one of the reasons Lovecraft died a poor man.

Sadly, Lovecraft was horribly underpaid and largely ignored throughout his life. If it wasn't for his friend and protege August Derlith, Lovecraft would likely be forgotten.
