Fantastic huge sugar cane Danny.Soo happy you and Wanda will be having some to sell on your Etsy Store. I still have a pint of it,and it is still good.I can't even describe the unusual and deliscious flavor of it.We have put it on everything,almost.I will be checking your store to get some more.Good luck harvesting,pressing and cooking it soon.I remember the video when you two were outside cooking it,and it was freezing cold there.That was no fun i'm sure.Glad you can do it all in stages this Season,and will have help also.Get your gloves ready Miss Amanda.God Bless,and be well you all.♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡.......

Great video!! I gotta get my cane mill fixed up. Most of the old timers around here plant sorghum from seed. Maybe because our cold winters they can’t plant in the fall. We Love eating the foam they pull off while making it.

Thank you. I learned a lot from this video. I am hoping to get started growing Sugarcane this year. I want it strictly for the juice. I have chewed Sugarcane and drank Sugarcane juice all my life. I love it. I can buy the syrup from those who make it, but the juice is not something I can find. I plan to freeze the juice in small containers so I can have it all year and some to share with family. I have froze the juice in the past, and it holds it's flavor very well.

Thanks Danny. Can you can the raw juice from the chewing cane to use as a liquid sugar or would it need to be processed more in order to use it that way? Also can you use the individual sticks of the chewing cane like a swizzle stick in your hot teas and coffee to sweeten the beverage, or simmer it in the water before brewing the tea? Around here they grow sorghum and I've only experienced fresh sugar cane a couple of times and that was 50 + years ago. A few of the old timers grew small stands of it for special treats. Much Love
@DeepSouthHomestead
@DeepSouthHomestead 5 жыл бұрын
The raw juice will sour over night if not kept cold. Plus it needs to be processed to get rid of the imputities in it. The sugar sticks are best just chewed on.

We are in NC and bought both chewing and juicing cane... My husband asked me should we tarp it with silage tarps over winter to keep it from being exposed to frost/freeze during January/February... what should I tell him? It is planted in full sun 8" deep all in one very long row. Our silage tarps are black on one side and white on the other side but do not allow sunlight to come through.

Hi Danny, I have another question please. My sugar cane is doing great in the raised bed garden and the ones I planted in a large container. Each sugar cane seedling I planted has smaller shoots coming from the main stalk and I want to know if they should be removed or leave them to grow with the main stalk. Thanks for answering my previous question. :~)

In Hawaii especially on the island of Oahu they had a big sugarcane industry, hence C&H California & Hawaii sugar. Since then most has moved to the Philippine Islands. They used to burn the sugarcane fields before harvesting. The sugarcane fields were fascinating. Have you ever been to Hawaii when they had the sugarcane fields? How did you like them?

Cane is sold all the time in some southern tropical regions from producers. Its not a store item because it has no shelf life and with out the proper equipment it is diffucult to use for syrup making. Each person sets there own price for what they sell theres for. Most we have found on line is more expensive than what we sell ours for. Its very heavy and hard to ship also.
