Sugar Ray Leonard is an all time great. When Ray fought Roberto Duran. The greatness seed that Duran gave Sugar Ray Leonard after that fought is a huge part of Ray's greatness as a fighter because Roberto Duran was already considered to be the greatest lightweight that ever lived. The old timers felt that way because of Duran's incredible intensity and extremely high skill level that he brought to the table. Duran was very unique animal. Duran would have torn Floyd Mayweather, Jr to pieces in a fight. Consider the Maidana and Castillo fights with little Floyd. Floyd Mayweather struggled in those matches in a big way. Duran was in a entirely different league as a fighter than Maidana or Castillo. Getting back to Sugar Ray Leonard it was his versatility that made him so great. He beat the great Tommy Hearns. How did Sugar accomplish such a mind blowing victory over such a fabulous boxer as Hearns? Hearns was very fast and I would argue that Hearns was the hardest puncher in welterweight history. Watch Hearns fight with with Roberto Duran. If Hearns could have punched just a little harder with his right hand that night, Duran's head would exploded upon impact! It was a horrible and the same time and amazing punch to behold. The sound of the punch in the arena was so loud one might conjure at the moment in the arena that an atomic bomb was detonated against Duran's head!!! Hearns was over six feet tall and wing span that was like a heavyweight. His jab was pristine and for a welterweight that jab was powerful and super fast. Nobody could out jab Tommy Hearns. If you saw Tommy Hearns walk around in his prime you would come to the conclusion that Ray was not going to beat Hearns even with all the amazing blessings Ray Leonard had as a great fighter. Ray struggled mightily through the whole fight and was losing on all cards until he stopped Tommy Hearns in a breathtaking fight in the 14 th round. Tommy Hearns would have stopped Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in 10 rounds or less had they fought as welterweights most likely. Floyd would have been hard pressed to win a round in a fight with Tommy Hearns! Sugar Ray Leonard against Floyd Mayweather, Jr., would have been a hard fight for Sugar Ray because of the styles and Floyd's great defensive skill. Leonard would have to dig deep, had they fought. It would likely have gone the distance with Sugar Ray's because of all Ray's uncommon intangibles as a fighter, that allowed him to beat all those all time great fighters like with very different styles like Wifredo Benitez, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Ray's intangible aspects as fighter is what made Sugar Ray Leonard so great. Ray may very well be the most cagey fighter in boxing history. Ray would likely beat Floyd because Leonard somehow adapted so well to all fighter styles. Ray just figured out how to beat other fighters intuitively as he did the above great fighters with their very different styles of each man. Which leads me to believe that he would have solved the Floyd Mayweather, Jr. puzzle as well. With that being written, I do think Floyd Mayweather, Jr was the greatest 130 pound fighter that I ever saw fight. He was one of the greatest fighters period. And, as of this writing Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is 50-0 and he has made more money than any fighter in boxing history. All these guys in this commentary are so far above most motal boxing world champions. Is it even possible to categorize a professional boxing world champion a mere mortal in the first place? The men herein sit high atop the mythical Mount Olympus of boxing.

most people agree that duran would mutilate FMJ. I can't picture in any world how floyd would beat Duran
@jonbathurst49365 жыл бұрын
I think Floyd gives him trouble as long as the fight remains outside and a boxing match. But SRL catches Floyd at some point and keeps hurting him, then stops him. He's fast and bigger - has the heart and confidence of a champion. I can't see FMJ running away with a decision.

I think 2 deals were made in the early 80s for a fight w/ Leonard and Pryor- Pryor turned down the first bc he felt that the Leonard camp lowballed him (apparently, a similar thing happened with Roberto Duran where Pryor also felt as if he deserved more money so he turned the bout down). The other was was set to take place in late 1982- Leonard was to face his mandatory challenger Roger Stafford and Pryor afterwards but he discovered his detached retina training for the Stafford bout so his fight with Pryor never took place.
