Valdez, making his seventh appearance in the Grand Canyon State, joins Wilson in seeking redemption in the arena that hosted their last defeats.
In the co-feature, WBC/WBA/Ring Magazine champion Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada and WBO/IBF ruler Yokasta Valle collide in a highly anticipated showdown for the undisputed minimumweight crown. The prolonged war of words between the two world champs will culminate in a milestone 12-round fight presented in association with Golden Boy Promotions and MarvNation Promotions.

I saw this fight on closed circuit TV with 10 000 other boxing fans. One of my favorite sports memories. I entered as a Leonard fan and exited as a Duran fan.

Duran had so many nuances to his game, especially on the inside but even midrange when coutner punching he had such a deep arsenal. Imagine if he was naturally bigger.

Anyone here after Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney? Both fights were similar in a puncher vs a boxer. The underdog puncher (Duran/Ryan) ended up beating the favored boxer (Leonard/Haney)

This was a great fight. The four kings were awesome. The 80s were the glory days boxing hopefully with Saudi Arabia involved in boxing we can get more of the best against the best in a timely fashion, not waiting five years for a underwhelming fight.

A couple of interesting facts about the undercard of this fight. One boxer, Cleveland Denny, died shortly after his fight that night from injuries he sustained as a result of being knocked out. Also Roger Leonard, Ray's older brother, won his fight and would retire a couple of years later with a final record of 16-1.

I remember this fight. When men were men. I had it 9 to 5 and 1 even for Duran. Leonard fought hard and bravely but he got beat up pretty good. Ironically Ray got more respect in this loss than he got for the rematch. The best most violent kinetic chess match I have ever witnessed. Today's fighters simply just don't match up. Guys like Tank or Canelo would do everything to avoid their best opponents. Dare I say modern boxers are now soft??

Manos de piedra, at his prime, took everything that Sugar Ray had and out punched the boxer. The second fight was a circus, but on this night Duran was king.

This commentator is way over hyped, Leonard wasn't buckled or hurt badly in the first or second. He never lost his footing or composure, countered and landing shots just as devastating. Annoying to listen to when you can clearly see whats going on. No doubt Duran was a killer but Leonard was never a push over but because he was a slicker fighter was never given the same respect with regards to courage and toughness he deserved.

Leonard definitely won. He threw more punches in the later rounds and Duran wasn’t doin* to much but it looked like was because he was constantly dominating Leonard by moving forward and looking like he’s in his element. Because Leonard looked awkward and not the slick mover he would usual demonstrate he looked like the opponent.

Back then the fighters were tough and exciting to watch. After that generation of fighters went away came Mayweather with his jab, hug and run technique. Ugh. Both Leonard and Duran would have knocked Mayweather the fuck out. Mayweather would not have been able to run away from those fighters.

smh ive always known leonard by reputation and saw mostly highlights throughout the years, im at round 5 and i am not impressed with all the clinching initiated by leonard.

Duran only fought at 130 pounds early on in his career. Even a young Duran would give prime Arguello problems though. See both of their fights against Ernesto Marcel for reference.

@@Doogz1219True but that was still a green Argüello who almost knocked Marcel out if I remember correctly. Also the fight was at fw 126. Nevertheless, Duran did ko Marcel when he was green too, but I still don’t think that would be any indication of how the fight would go at 130. As you said Duran only fought at 130 in the beginning of his career, whereas Argüello peaked at 130 and is quite possibly the greatest super featherweight of all time, although there are quite a few boxers who would pose serious problems to him head to head, but leaving head to head aside, many boxing fans rank him as the best super fw and also the ring named him the greatest super fw too
