The biggest fix in boxing history 10 million to say no Mas💰💰💰
@dinodeluca62105 жыл бұрын
The reason was very simple: Duran took the money, didn't have enough time to properly train to get his weight down and basically was weakened from making weight. Roberto balloons to over 200 lbs between fights...why the hell would he take a rematch so quickly. It was a bad move made for a big payday.

Look....here is the bottom line....duran ALWAYS blew up in between fights.....its not king's fault, Leonard's fault....or anybody else's fault that Duran couldnt keep himself fairly close to fighting shape in between fights.....Cosell said during the the first fight duran had to lose 7 lbs....back in the 80s fights....especially rematches....happened a lot quicker than now....so after Duran said after the first fight in the studio he would fight ray again he shouldnt have ballooned to 200 lbs.... And finally....Duran DESERVED what he got! After all the BS Leonard had to deal with from him before the first fight....Duran got exactly what he deserved....promoting a fight is one thing....but you DON'T go after someone's family.....and that's what Roberto did....

So Duran claimed he always ate like that before a fight and that losing weight to get to the 147 lb limit was not a problem for this fight and that he was in better shape than he was for the first fight. But he also contradicted himself by saying he would train better for a 3rd Leonard fight and that he felt they were both weight drained and Leonard was weak and needed to move up. He also claimed Leonard didn't really beat him and couldn't really beat him but contradicted himself by admitting that they were now 1-1 against each other.

Agreed it's not the same. Biggest issue with Ray, IMO, was he was the superstar and was able to manipulate the sport to his advantage to the detriment of all else. No 3rd Duran match until he was very old, no rematch with Hearrns, after a gift stoppage win, until he was thought to be spent, no Hagler fight until he was spent, silly gimmick to win 5 belts making the awkward light heavyweight Lalonde come down to a 168 catch weight, winning and dropping the super-welter belt thus diminishing it. Those are some issues fans have with him. Tons of talent, skill and heart though. No doubt.

Duran ate a steak just before the 2nd Leonard fight, and for some whatever reason,it didn't agree with his stomach. This happens though. Could've been Tainted meat,or Duran's unusually taxed and depleted body just wasn't ready to eat that kind of food,but he did,mainly out of severe desperation due to the extreme weakness that he obviously felt. What you're supposed to do,as a boxer or mma fighter, is fast from meats for a good week or so,just before the fight, to avoid that risk of eating possibly Tainted meat that will cause stomach problems and physically debilitate you're abilities in the ring. Duran was fasting away like a concentration camp prisoner for 2 and a half months to lose over 80 lbs in that short of time span. He went from 230-147,which left him in a very weak emaciated physical state of being,thus why he chowed down on that steak just before the fight out of a mindset of desperation,due to feeling so weak and vulnerable.

That second fight was all mularkey. It was a NATIONALISTIC PLOT to get the title back to America because the great Roberto Duran EMBARRASSED American boxing. Duran humiliated their Golden Boy and American boxing in its totality. They had to make a quick rematch, because it was unacceptable that a macho man that was considered uneducated and a bully, be the #1 boxing guy. They tried it for years by putting Muhammad Ali first on the covers, but in reality, the #1 fighter of the 1970s decade was Duran. So, Sugar Ray Leonard becomes the answer to the Panamanian legend. Just like The Monkees or the Byrds were the sorry answer to the British Beatles. Leonard was no match. But the excuses came that he didn't fight his fight and a rematch gotta be made very quickly. Because a lot of millions were involved, the rematch was done quickly as possible. It was unacceptable for American media to accept the Panamanian that came from 2 weight classes down to beat their superstar. The $8 million dollars was THE BIG BAIT and Duran's management team took it behind Duran's back. It was never in Duran's interest but theirs. It was big money then. And big money now. Anybody would have been baited by that type of money offer. If Duran's management team would have played it Smart, they would have said, give us more time to think about that and talk to Roberto, but they sold their souls to the devil. They got greedy, and No Mas happened. If it were by normal circumstances, Duran would have been in better shape and No Mas never would occurred. But, unfortunately, it did. It is part of his boxing history. But, the guy won 2 more titles after that. That's INSANE AND INCREDIBLE. To me, Duran is a top 5 all-time pound per pound great.
