Damn--I thought Jimmy was really playing the piano, and was falling even a little more in love with him, 'till the end, where it became clear he was pretending. He is pretty musical, though, I think, and I love that he had Audra do this. I hope we'll see lots more theater people on the show (not that Audra isn't known pretty well on screen too). I LOVE it that this extremely talented, apparently genuinely nice guy has finally brought the Tonight Show back to New York City, where it belongs. I hope he'll take another page from vintage, Johnny Carson era and earlier Tonight Show culture, and sprinkle in at least a few guests other than just screen and popular music celebrities, like authors, scientists, humanitarians, directors, producers, artists of all kinds, classical, jazz and other musicians and composers, business people (please not Donald Trump), architects, urban planners, editors, publishers, bloggers--just as long as they're interesting and have something worthwhile to talk about. One other thing I liked about the Tonight Show I'd watch as a child (yes, I'm old) was that the guests would come on and then not only would they all stay, but eventually they and Johnny would be having a full conversation, with all involved. There was often a very interesting mix of folks from quite varied areas of expertise, accomplishment or fame, and the conversations were most often really lively and intelligent. Flashes of quick wit mixed with thoughtful talk that had time to stretch, and nice, even scintillating exchanges arose amongst people who really were interested in what the others had to say--at its best, it was great chemistry, and even at its worst, it was better than most of what's seen on entertainment talk shows these days (and for quite awhile now). Johnny also seemed to like to introduce his audience to new artists he liked; I still remember the thrill, the night he first brought Bette Midler on the show, while she was still doing her gig at the Continental Baths, and was almost completely unknown outside of a particular niche of people in New York. Not sure if it's accurate, but I recollect the shape of the couch having some curve to it, to be conducive to conversation and not just speaking out towards the audience. Does anyone else remember that?
