Bradman never played the dust bowls of India /Pakistan... never even faced reverse swing, never faced bowlers like kumble in India with spitting cobra bounce off the pitch (overspin), never faced spinners of caliber of warne Murali saqlain. The only great spinner he faced was Verity and bradmans record against him was apalling. Bradman only ever made his runs in a few venues in 2 or 3 countries.. Imagine if Tendulkar played only in India and Australia for his whole career.. where would his average be?

What sets Bradman apart from all others from any era has nothing to do with quality of bowlers he faced or didn't face, variety of conditions or not even covered versus uncovered pitches. What sets Bradman apart is two things: 1. Statistically, he was nearly twice as good as the next best of any era, whether his own, previous or subsquent (eras). Walter Hammond, first to 7000 test runs, played during Bradman's era and averaged 58. Gary Sobers, first to 8000 test runs, played in the era immediately after Bradman's and averaged 57. Steve Smith's career is only half over and he is averaging 61. And the great names among batsmen from Bradman to Smith could go on and on ... the point is, no other player has been so statistically superior to his or her peers in any other era of any other sport. Bradman's average of 99 is roughly the equivalent of Michael Jordan averaging 59 points per game in America's NBL. Did Bradman actually play better in his best innings than Viv Richards or Ricky Ponting did in their best innings (just to name two examples)? No he didn't. Would Bradman have averaged 99 any time from about 1970 onwards? Probably not. However, would any post 1970 batsman have averaged anywhere near 99 playing in Bradman's era? We will never know, but I think also probably not. The other thing that sets Bradman apart from all others - and this is entirely related to point 1 in the previous paragraph - was his conversion rate once reaching 50. He played 80 test innings (10 of them not out) and scored centuries in 29 of them and more than 50 in 41 of them - in other words he reached 50 every 2nd innings. No other batsman has done that at any level, never mind test cricket. Even including the 12 times he was dismissed between 50 and 100, the 51 test innings where he didn't score a century his average was a rather ordinary 33. I would expect players who have retired with a career average of more than 50 to have a similar average for non-century innings in test matches, if for no other reason that they have a higher proportion of non-century innings being dismissed in that phase between 50 and 100 though someone would have to do a lot of research to either prove or disprove this premise. Mark Waugh, for example, scored 20 test tons in 209 innings (17 of them not out) and his average in the 189 innings he didn't make a ton was 32. His overall career average was 42, but in the 20 innings when he scored a ton, his average was 151, compared to Bradman's massive average of 245 in the 29 test innings that he scored a ton. However, look at what happened in innings when Bradman reached 50 - as stated above every 2nd test innings (Mark Waugh, for example, reached a half century every 3rd test innings, but a ton only every 10 innings): in 29 of these 41 occasions he converted to a century or 70%. Any other batsman in the history of the game has been marvelled at with a 50 to century conversion rate of even 50%. But in the 29 innings when Bradman reached 100, on 17 occasions, he continued on to 150 which is a 100 to 150 conversion rate of 59%. I think we can safely say that few other batsman have achieved anywhere near this. But the trend continues: His conversion rate from 150 to 200 was 70% or 12 of 17 occasions. On the 12 occasions he reached a test double ton, he continued past 240 on 5 occasions, which is a 40% conversion rate. And on the 4 occasions he passed 250, he converted 2 of these to triples, although it was virtually 3 given that on one occasion he was left stranded on 299 not out when a number 11 ran himself out in a test in adelaide against south africa in 1931-32. So he also has a 250 to 300 conversion rate of virtually 70%. In terms of smashing bowlers all over the park, many players have matched Bradman, some have even exceeded him. But noone has come even remotely close to emulating his phenomenal conversion rates once reaching 50. The assumption can be made that when Bradman reached 100, the pitch was good for batting on, and in these conditions he just refused to allow the bowlers to get him out, while still motoring along at similar rates to the likes of Tendulkar and Ponting and Lara in modern times in terms of strike rates or runs scored per every 100 balls faced. Educated estimates have Bradman's test strike rate of 61 runs per 100 balls faced. This is roughly the same as Ponting, Lara, Tendulkar, Kohli and Smith, slightly lower than Viv Richards, Kevin Pietersen and Matthew Hayden, and much lower than Virender Sehway (75) and Adam Gilchrist (84). All of these modern players averaged between 47 and 61 (runs per innings), bearing in mind that Smith and Kohli's careers are only about half over, meaning both their final average runs per innings and strike rates of runs per 100 balls faced may, from this point go up or down compared to where they sit now. Interestingly, as far as I am aware, Bradman was never dismissed in the 90s in test cricket, even though the laws of mathematical probability say that 20% of innings between 50 and 100 should logically terminate in the 90s, rather than necessarily having anything to do the 'nervous 90s. Michael Slater was dismissed in the 90s on 9 of the 21 occasions he was out between 50 and 100, so this is clearly a shocking case of the nervous 90s syndrome. Steve Waugh holds the record for most scores of between 90 and 100 in test cricket, with 10 times. However, this is not as dubious a record as some might - quite understandably - automatically think. For a start, 2 of those occasions he was left stranded not out when his side was bowled out, and on another occasion, he was wrongly adjudged run out with the umpire strangely not going to the video replay which showed that the bowler had not even legitimately broken the stumps with the ball. Waugh played 168 tests, 260 innings, scored 32 centuries and had 50 scores between 50 and 100, so 10 into 50 is precisely the aforementioned mathematical probability of 20%. And his conversion rate for 50s into 100s of 39% is pretty standard for most great players.
