Very nice. I am writing a paper on Suhrawardi's critique of Avicenna's metaphysics next semester in a graduate directed study. I will rewatch your video and incorporate elements of it into my paper and list you in my bibliography. Thank you!

although with many differences, i observed some similarities with the kashmiri school of shaiva absolute monism, Abhinavagupta and others, and also the Spanda current of it. it might be interesting to draw parallelisms and differences between the two systems of thought.

Thank you for for this simplified and amazing explanation, the video was great, and it shows how much time and effort you have put to study and absorb his work. please keep the exploration on Persian Islamic mystics. there is really not so much of high quality stuff about their work on KZfaq. it also would help if you pronounce the Arabic words, if it is possible Keep up the good work. may the universal wisdom and blessing of the masters be upon you.

Also if it worth sharing Reading his philosophy of illumination in a retreat of fasting and silence ( both in mind and tongue) really has practical effects on the seeker's understanding. his works are very effective on people who are looking for intuitive spiritual knowledge. it's like magic

Very interested in the project and I just found you. I'm about half way through the man of light and was looking for someone to help me understand it as my reference points are mainly hermeticism and gnosticism. Although I love the texts the understaning of it goes deeper than reading and becoming aware of something that is always with us but is blacked out by ego and materialism

Do you find the experience of Music interesting (?) If so, I'd suggest exploring it further. My understanding is that Music is one experience in Life in which the relationship between the higher worlds and the physical world is least obscured . . .

Very nice… Suhrawardi’s works take a few readings to grasp at a meaningful level. I am cusrious about the ascetic practices he perscribed, they seem so abstract, hard to understand fully. Sure the concept of fasting is there, but how about tangible steps further to taste, dhawq??

That’s a great question. I really can’t say anything definitive in response to it other than that I’ve found some of the prayers and invocations quoted in the video to have had a powerful effect on my own practices. Somehow they bring the spirit of Suhrawardi into presence for me.

Imo you should check out Tibetan Dzogchen or the Jhanas in Buddhism Theravada, many practices around ascending levels of direct perception that are very similar to what Suhrawardī is alluding to. It does require a lot of practice.

Suhrawardi's philosophy, and especially his theory of knowledge, actually reminds me a lot of Jean Paul Sarte's philosophy, at least it strikes me that they are addressing similar issues in some respects. Jean Paul Sarte was concerned with how we know that we know as well, and his conclusion was that we have a consciousness which knows an object (a positional consciousness) and a consciousness which is aware of itself (a nonpositional consciousness). This nonpositional conscious for Sarte strikes me as similar to light in Suhrawardi's thinking in that they both are self-aware and involve non-relational knowledge. It reminds me a bit of the religious existentialism of folks like Kierkegaard as well in sime regards.
@liminalmatrices1595
@liminalmatrices1595 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the comparison is apt. Suhrawardi's knowledge by presence can, I think, be situated in a broader stream of certain anti-representational positions. This is something I hope to explore in future videos.

Likes of Sartre were drowning in the ocean of existence in which the likes of Suharwardi swim with delight. There is nothing comparable between someone who is an atheist struggling to give 'meaning' to his life and the one who has realised and experienced the the levels of existence in such depth and clarity.
@liminalmatrices1595

@@Ali-pw1hu You're missing the point. The comparison is in regard to how we gain access to reality, not about the nature of the reality that is accessed. On the latter topic, as well as many others, Suhrawardi and Sartre are worlds apart.

I often wonder if it is truly spiritual illumination that these people are speaking about or instead just mistook the bright lights of extraterrestrial flying machines ... reminds me of the episode of Yawveh and Moses on mount Sinai, when the old prophet asked the demiurge to show him his "kavod" to which this latter replied with something like this "ok, but when you see me come with my kavod you must hide behind those rocks because otherwise you will be cinged, no one can come too close to my kavod and survive" Exodus 33:18-23 :D

these gods, elohim, anunnaki, viracocha, neteru or whatever they were called, were not exactly human, lived very long (thousands of years), had extraordinary intelligence and technology (including flying machines and mass-destruction weapons (remember Sodoma, Gomorra, Mohinja Daro etc), exquisitely perfect architecture, all the humans that saw insisted that they came from the stars ... what more do you need? Dont you find interesting that billions of us would easily believe that Jesus walked on deep water without technology and was raised from the dead but extraterrestrials? Nooooo :D

@@mikesoussan Yes but the majority of people are unfortunately stup1d. Listen, most likely there were advanced humanoids on earth back then, but the more I've looked at the evidence I've realized they were too human to be extraterrestrials. Why would they need the things they needed e.g. making us as s1aves if they were advanced enough to travel interstellarly? I don't deny ets, that'd just be naive, but those guys in my opinion are humans, more advanced in most ways ofc, but either from a more ancient past or.. the opposite.
