I just listened to quite a few covers as well, and I agree this one is the best- by far. I don't like the chopper sound added, but it's still great. Can you do it again with the other verses? I added it to two of my playlists anyway, but I wish it was the whole song.

Do you want to know something interesting. This song was written for the mash movie with the director, Robert Altman, wanting to be the “stupidest song ever written” to fit with the faux-suicide of the painless pole character in the last supper scene. Robert tried to write it himself but found it to hard because in his mind, his 45 year old brain wasn’t stupid enough. So, he asked his then 14 year old son Michael to write it, which he did in 5 minutes. Robert later decided that because the song was so good, he put it as the theme of the movie. The funniest thing is that Robert got $70,000 for directing the movie and his son got more than $1 million for having co-written the song, which was used in the TV series and was number one in the UK Singles Charts in May 1980. There’s some irony in there somewhere.

I loved watching Mash on TV back in the days. And we played this song in Jr. High Band, but I never knew the lyrics. So great. And it's strange for Mash theme songs. Out score just say, the "MASH Theme Song." I think we jr. high kids would have been weirded out if it had the real title.

Then a terrible accident happens, and dozens come to pay respects to a fallen fellow... And off in the corner, Brian whips out a beautiful guitar, and steals the scene, by playing a song like this. And people are brought to tears, and make comments about how good it is to see him...

The song is so repetitive, Michael, and the lyrics so morose, that I always leave out several stanzas rather than risk depressing my audience.

@@BrianWhitmerMusic I didn't think your version was depressing at all. I thought it was amazing. :-) I've just worked out a version of the song for the ukulele which I will post shortly. The backstory of this song is very fascinating too. Robert Altman reached out to Johnny Mandel who wrote the song sans lyrics and his own teenage son Michael Altman wrote the lyrics. Michael Altman asked for a guitar for payment but instead he was awarded a standard Hollywood movie score contract. The irony is that Robert Altman only made $70,000 to make the film but his son has made over a $1,000,000 in royalties over the years.

Most individuals do not realize that Sept 10th is world suicide awareness day. Ask a therapist and they don't know. For those of us whom do not cross that line, it's something we can't describe. Your guitar play sounds perfect to me, you're a great singer too! I just think you deviate a little bit from the melody in a way that makes it sound less elegant. The original melody with the second voice is perfect.

@@gnuling296 I was a public school teacher for 33 years, so I’ve had plenty of experience at fielding criticism. That said, your comment was polite, sincere, and didn’t feel much like criticism. It struck me as an attempt to open a dialogue, not to throw shade.

So on your advice I went back and gave a listen to this version of the song - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/haqGadCpu7y2ip8.html - and I think I see what you mean. It’s not that I’m signing different pitches of the melody; it’s that I’m signing different rhythms and phrasings, right? For example, in the phrase “…things to be…” (at 0:11), I’m lengthening the word “things” and shortening the word “to” whereas the singer in the original recording is doing the opposite. Do I have that right? If so, to each his own. At this point I’ve been singing it that way for so long that it’s what my ear has come to prefer. The original version, which sounds elegant to you, now sounds sing-songy to me.

I’m also a member of the school of thought that believes cover songs should be personalized interpretations, not copies, of the originals. I’m thinking here of my love for Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt, Counting Crows’ version of Big Yellow Taxi, and, most perfect of all, Deanna Kirk’s version of Song of Bernadette. Unfortunately, though, I can’t claim that’s what I was doing with Suicide is Painless. In this particular case, I simply slid off the original melody over time without realizing it. Busted!

@@BrianWhitmerMusic I only listen to cds. It's personal for me, although the only cd I listen to these days is by an old LA band called Love, of all things: Forever Changes. I listen to too much music, I don't practice on my acoustic and forget how to play harmonics!
