'Suicide Squad' Comic-Con Teaser | Vendor: Trailer Park
This initially leaked teaser showed up on just about every Best of Year list and for very good reason. After a mixed response to DC’s Batman Vs. Superman, and some truly terrible early publicity photos, many had major doubts about Suicide Squad. Then this dark, weirdly playful, and undoubtably sinister preview surfaced, turning concern to excitement. The true star of the cut is a moody-as-all-hell cover of Bee Gees “I Started A Joke”. We’re now years deep into the “somber covers of old pop songs” era, but this choice is still quite inspired and glues the whole thing together.
Great use of dissolves throughout for a much more dramatic takeaway than normally seen in a comic book movie trailer. The strong editorial touches are many, a few standouts: the awesome wind-up studio logos at 00:08 (2015’s answer to the reved up car logos in 2014’s Max Mad: Fury Road), the matched action of Smith pointing at 2:12, and probably my favorite trailer hard-cut of the year, Margot Robbie’s baseball bat “gun cock, blast” into the last copy card at 2:04.
This piece wasn’t originally meant for public consumption, and I still believe it dropped far too early in the marketing cycle (a problem seemingly hurting Batman v Superman) but part of what makes it so impressive is that the movie wasn’t close to finished shooting so the footage was scarce. To still come up with a cut this strong is really something.
