Writing a story/series/movie with characters owned by other people/instances is a nightmare. "Alright, I'm gonna make them do this next ! ...aaaaaand not allowed cause apparently that character wouldn't do that according to the IP holder. Whelp!"

Let’s be frank folks, WB and DC have for years massively overestimated and overhyped the appeal of Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad. The video game only added insult to apathy. They’re so desperate to make these characters into their own Deadpool and Guardians equivalent that they’re throwing them at everything like darts to a wall, except the darts are poorly constructed and bounce off the wall instead.

If Tappei would've worked on a Metroid Prime anime instead with Nintendo's permission, I'll be interested.

I actually heavily disagree with you this time Chibi. The show is loads of fun to watch. Its got good fights, already good characters we know, an interesting ridiculous premise, and some decent comedy. I think looking at the show as a trash isekai fan and dc fan the show is very referential to tropes and history of the characters and genre. The premise of the show is how the suicide squad cast would react to an isekai and I'd say the show nails it perfectly. All of the characters feel like they'd lept straight out of the movies and even Clayface is close to accurate to who he is. Eccentric movie star driven mad. Some liberties were taken with him for sure to make him look attractive, charismatic, and knowledgeable about isekai, but overall I find it funny rather than annoying. Also according to the opening there are a lot more surprises that will be coming ourway with other DC characters leaking in. My only worry is that the art quality will dip down, but overall im impressed by how this show is panning out so far.

This is the issue I have with big IP spinoffs like this, it's hard for the writers to really let their creativity shine and do anything crazy because of the pressure to just play it safe and avoid pushing buttons.

First impression was alright, although after finishing the first episode, I have to wonder: What is the end goal for an Isekai story in the first place? Konosuba is at least meant to be comedic, Re Zero or Mushoku Tensei actually has good lore and world building, however this DC anime didn’t give me that feeling.

Western bros think animating a shitshow with japanese animators and adding "Isekai" in the title is the formula of sucess. Failing to realize that 100%of isekai animes only exist because they are popular light novels first and foremost, with thousands of other stories releasing at the same time and getting rejected or forgotten. Interesting character designs and flashy fight scenes will get people talking maybe a week and then drop it.

At the end of the day, WB wanted a cyberpunk Edgerunners level anime that can revive the game, but you know when the game is shit, the anime itself becomes bad.

I dont think this show needs to be anything spectacular or a master piece, it just needs to be fun. I will agree that it will probably be somewhat surface level so the DC only fans who know nothing about anime or isekai wont freak out and drop the show. But i think the more than make up for it with vibes, its just fun to watch so far. I think it will become a good binge watch show if anything.

I'd wait till episode 5 to see if the show gets better, but since it's only going to be a 10 episode series, it might not say much. However, based off of what was said about the first 3 episodes, it sounds to me that: 1. WB & DC are most likely to ones who are limiting the staff from going full on with the show. 2. After hearing about the new Scooby-doo anime & the upcoming LotR anime styled film, it's obvious that this show is the start of WB diving into anime.

I actually dropped this *because* Tappei was writing it. That's NOT because I think Tappei is a bad writer, I just don't think his style and specialties is suited for this kind of story. I think Tappei's specialty is character arcs, really strong & impactful emotions, great plotting, and really unique & well-utilized concepts. If you look at his two best works; Re;Zero and Vivy, you'll notice that those things are those stories' biggest strengths. But imo something like Suicide Squad is best suited for a writer who's specialty is character dialogue & character interactions during more mundane moments. And although Tappei's character dialogue is pretty good in it's own right, it's not his specialty. For Eiji, I have no idea what his style is since I haven't watched any of the shows he's worked on besides Re;Zero and Vivy. Based on what I've seen of Suicide Squad Isekai(I only watched the first episode so far), I'm inclined to believe that dialogue isn't his specialty either. Again, I'm not saying that either of them are bad writers or that either of them are bad at writing dialogue or character ineteractions. They're obviously plenty good at those things. I'm just saying that you need writers with a specialty in dialogue for this kind of story. Because the biggest appeal of this story is gonna be the way these characters act and how they interact with each other.

The release schedule for this series is exactly one week ahead of Japan so yeah we’re getting the next episode next week

As a DC fan, I'm really disappointed. Animation is good (not peak just good) overall it's just better than average. I really had my hope high up in the heaven cuz why not it's freaking suicide squad isekai animated by WIT. My disappointment started with Joker design and the way how the isekai world look like. I’ve been a fan of the DC direct to dvd animated movies for over a decade. Suicide Squad: Hell to pay and Batman:Assault on Arkham are amazing so when this was announced I was really excited. When I found out Captain Boomrang a core member of the suicide squad since the 90s wasn’t in it I got worried. Chibi your initial reaction has me really scared for the outcome of this series.

Having watched the series myself I think it’s less that they put restrictions on Tappie and more so that he just doesn’t know the material! The way the characters written feel very surface level accurate like he read the Wikipedia page and knows what stereotypes are associated with each character, but doesn’t actually get their personalities or their dynamics within the group! I feel like the script for these first three episodes would’ve been a whole lot better have they had hired someone who’s actually a fan of these comics like Kohei Horikoshi or Yu Chiba!

You say that the script writers know what they are doing, but the thing is this anime isn’t about fantasy, isekai or even the supernatural. No, it’s about the Suicide squad a dark, gritty superhero show. So maybe the writers who worked on Super Crooks would have been the better choice here.

From your description of the first three episodes it sounds like there's a big pacing issue as well. Like a lot of fluff and stuff that could be cut out for scenes later on. I'm almost 30 and I've been watching anime for most of my life and the older I get the more I start to realize pacing issues where nothing's really happening to advance the plot bandit stagnant for like 3 episodes

I just watched the first 3 eps and I think it's great and only going to get better. It took until the end of the 3rd ep to have them all in their costumes at full power. This was merely the prelude to the real story and twists they've yet to tell. Still, I was laughing out loud at a lot of scenes, it looks great, sounds great, phenomenal cast, VAs writers and all. I'm on board until the end!

And what you mentioned about "generic script-writing" is something I would expect from Warner Bros which is kinda unfortunate considering that Tappei & Eiji are the script-writers. Having the name of a writer of a good anime/story in general doesn't mean shit. Even Dragon Ball Super is bad, while they used Toriyama's name all over it in hopes of shielding it from criticism. Having a good story on its name doesn't mean he's having the same life experiences from the time of that story, or he's in the mood for it, or so many other variables envolving production. I mean, we always try to simplify these things to only one people/thing's fault, but in reality it's never like that. And there were many such cases in recent memory.
