Yeah, this is literally THE plot of a sport manga/anime lol. Suisei is the wanting-to-retire protagonist Miko, Towa and Okayu are her long time rivals refuse to let her retire Banchou is the rising young star ready to receive her king status And Ao-kun is the secret next gen protagonist who will undergo several training arcs with multiple rivals along the way in the sequel.

Remember back in 2021, when Suisei bested Aqua by one point?

Hell, if Suisei just didn't fall there and finish the final race in 3rd place she would have won the tournament since she would have had 1 point more than Towa. It is almost ridiculous how incredibly close it was.

Well this particular story was about trying to prevent Suisei from retiring. Miko Okayu and Towa were the most focused on preventing Suisei from retiring. Suisei and Okayu won back to back Mario Cups 2022/2023 so they have a soft rivalry in the holo cup and Okayu doesn't want to lose her Mario Kart rival. Miko and Towa are also Suisei's rivals and close friends in general and also don't want to see Suisei leave the New Years Cup tradition. Miko also has the strong desire to one day beat Suisei in a race set so she wants to keep Suisei around for as long as it takes. Everyone else was most likely indifferent to Suisei's decision either way and didn't make it their priority to stop Suisei from retiring.

@@joshgallie1543 She's the only 2 time champion and came very close to winning it for the third time (tied with Towa for 1st place but lost the countback). Last year Suisei said that if she ever won twice in a row, she would retire. Those three other members don't want her to retire because they want to beat her.

@@joshgallie1543 Suisei claims that she doesn't want to deal with the pressure from competing in the tournament any more and wanted the glory of retiring after 2 wins in a row. She also wants to be more of a coach and comentator. But she can still do all that while still participating. As for dealing with the pressure of participating, most members are nervous when they participate too, so she'll just have to learn to deal with that like other players have.

@@salaciousvgames I think the difference is that Suisei feels excessive pressure compared to everyone in general. Part of it is that other than the first year (where she was 1st place in the Zako Cup (as in on the top, not the bottom last place)) she has always been 1st or 2nd place, this creates an expectation of a strong performance that a lot of the members don't have to deal with (some other members like Okayu do have that sure, but most don't). There is also the fact that Suisei is quite competitive by nature. Of course other members have a similar drive. But competitiveness + pre established high performance isn't a recipe for calmness. Moreover the fact that Marine and Choco, both long term parts of the tournament, not taking part this year most likely reinforced Suisei's own wish to retire from the tournament. Thought of course she wanted to leave on a high note rather than just not participating next year. Otherwise I am sure she could place whereever and noone could stop her if she decided she wasn't racing the year after. It is probably her competitive side again that makes her want another championship before she does retire. Same competitiveness most likely will lead to her participating next year as taking 2nd place frustrated her (thought less so than 2022 loss to Okayu or her results in the first tournament) and most likely invigorated her to continue for at least one more year. Additionally she has her anniversarry/birthday 3D concert on March, and preparations for that most likely start in January at the latest, not to mention any other concerts around Christmas and New Years she might have to deal with and HoloFes (thought of course all members share Holofes and with the Countdown Live an established tradition same for that too. And I am sure some members have anniversaries or birthdays closer to the tournament as well). So probably not that much a big factor.
