Perhaps someone pointed it out, but 7:00 is not saying 妻, but ツナー (Tuna, the name of the other party’s cat). I think this is relevant because this was the major rumour being spread on matome sites and what people were claiming to hear. And as she points out, it was “kochira wa…” instead.

First, thank you Yura for taking the time to translate basically the entire stream. For those of us on the EN side, many of us didn't know any of this was going on and only just learned this was happening today due to the stream. I'm glad we can have the full context. Second, my god, nothing can stop Suisei. I adore the fact that rather than ignore this she chose to face it directly, provide a short civics course on dealing with internet rumors, and then promote a freaking album on top of it all! Sasuga, Suichan! Keep being awesome!

It's a good healthy outlook on the whole yarnball that is the rumor mill. There's a Portuguese saying that "whoever tells a tale, adds a period or switches a comma", and that's never been incorrect. What impresses me most is her ability to create a clear hypothetical case, explain how it develops, and the method of dealing with it. It was a proper mini-course! Sui has excellent didactic sense, she could've easily been a teacher or professor had she picked that career path.

When she said "If someone spread a rumour about me killing someone, I would probably have to retire", it hit me hard because it is so true. When a rumour like that gets to the point of "this is the truth" (like how she explained in her presentation) it leads to permanent reputational damage, threats and likely a bunch more terrible rumours. It is extremely scary because like this controversy, a singular rumour from a small group of people can potentially cause a lot of trouble. Luckily, with cover's experience of dealing with this exact type of controversy and Suisei's amazing handling of the situation, this controversy was extinguished quickly. However, this controversy was probably a wake up call for all of her viewers about how a simple rumour based on wonky evidence can escalate into a massive online controversy.

Pretty much. As she said, right now it's just about her having a boyfriend, which wouldn't be a big deal even if it was true. But it's scary to think it could have been about something more serious. This is literally what happened to other vtubers in the past, like Kusonoki Sio for example, who was accused of slandering other people on anonymous forums, and who had to retire from her indie career three years ago (and who only recently reincarnated as another vtuber, just for the people to try to stir shit again after 3 years). Suisei pretty much nailed it when she said that there are tons of people who either hate vtubers, or just don't care and want to have interesting drama to talk about. Those people just see any drama as an occasion to stir things up because their lives are pretty boring. You will be seeing tons of accounts you've NEVER seen on a Suisei stream/video/Twitter thread/reddit thread talking about this "controversy" all of a sudden as if they were super invested in Suichan, because people just like to gossip about things, even when they aren't even interested in Suisei. Some of them will even claim "they were hurt to know Suisei has a bf" even though they have never watched a single stream, just to stir things up. Others will claim Suisei has been "playing with her viewer's feelings" even though, again, they haven't watched a single stream at all and have no idea about the kind of interaction Suisei has with her chat. It's just how the internet is sadly.

@@rigen97 Actually... Coco purposefully made herself a target to save someone else... A lot of folks have forgotten.. but it was actually Haachama who made the original Taiwan stream (and I use that term "stream" loosely as that really wasn't even what her stream was about). She basically was thanking the audiences she had outside of Jp by showing a part of her analytics to show the countries who were watching her and google had Taiwan as 3rd place on that list of countries. The anti's then started to target Haachama. Coco then made her own google analytics stream which completely shifted the focus on her to make her the target.

The telephone game analogy is nice. The transition between え...すいちゃん彼氏いるの into へ...すいちゃん彼氏いたのか is just three to four moji (if you count the mood modifier at the beginning) In the translation (excellent btw) it's "Eh? Suisei has a boyfriend?" And "Heh- suisei has a boyfriend huh." Just two words. Amazing isn't it. It's rare, but I think we can use use these small differences for good. Instead of "I can't go there, it's impossible" it's "I can't go there, there's another way." Sometimes, turning statement into question can be powerful, eg. "It's boring" to "is it boring?" Maybe it is boring, and you can fix it. Maybe you can't, but at least you thought about it. Language is amazing - use it kindly and use it well! Ps. Personally I would translate the 2nd phrase into "So suichan has a boyfriend" to further highlight the issue. Excellent tl, thanks for sharing this amazing article!

Missed this stream thinking it was just a shill stream, didn't know we'd get this kind of conversation but I'm glad we did (and she STILL shilled ssg Never Ending Shilling). This video would be nice to bring up as a reminder to everyone when rumors spread and controversies pop up out of nowhere. The telephone game analogy on how information on the internet spreads is so real. (Appreciated the "EH?! SUI-CHAN IS 〇〇" reaction being added here because that's how you attract the attention of a curious onlooker who may not care if they're receiving/spreading rumors.) I hope more people remember to check and or ask for the sources of the info they see being shared and if they're credible and factual to avoid spreading false info as if it is true. She handled this very well. The majority of the community (at least from what I saw) somewhat following in their footsteps was a relief. Thank you Yuna (and Yura) for your hard work as always o7

Heard a voice in the stream -> immediately jump to living together When there are other options like: neighbor, deliveryman, maybe stream from studio, staff, relatives visiting, sound leaked from speaker/phone/tv, house moving staff, landlord, etc. There are way too many option to even rule out the correct one, and they immediately jump to the wackiest one. I always find it funny when people take a huge logical leap straight into the stupidest one and have the nerve to show off their stupidity. props to Suisei to actually teach people how to handle internet rumors, people really need that kind of skills (even tho. it should be common sense).

You're not wrong, but on top of its own self contained rumor engine, This was just something used to add more fuel to the fire for the rumor that started on the other party's end, from what I've seen... Overall though, it's even more ridiculous. "Oh a Switch friend notification. Dating. Nobody adds switch friends with friends or family members.. Not even random internet acquaintances that they never talk to again." I think his kneejerk reaction didn't help.

This is why the term "don't feed the troll" exist. They thrive through your desire for moral higher ground. Every time I see a comment with a lot of replies (like, a lot, maybe 50 or even 100+), it's always one hater/troll vs mobs who are so eager to correct or attack them with vague facts + insults. Guess what, it went exactly like what Suisei said, it created a lot of incomplete information especially for those "bystander" who potentially spread it further. Stop feeding them. Report, block, do yourself a favor and have a good day instead of spending your energy against comment from someone you don't care about.

It's slightly baffling to me that it has to be explained that "you should question how credible information is and what source it came from". If a random fan in a comment section told me something like "did you know Marine knows how to drive", I could take that as fact/at face value because that's whatever. Little reason to lie about that, it's plausible, they likely learned that from a clip of Marine, there's really no issue being incorrect about that, etc. But something major or on the level of "Suisei is dating someone/married!", my mind is just "how do you even slightly entertain that thought for a second if it came from anywhere put Suisei herself?!" But then people go to such lengths to prove something, but they're doing it in an unbiased way so whatever they find supports whatever they believe. They're not looking for "what did the voice say", they're looking for "what did the voice say that proves Suisei is dating someone". It's simply baffling. Glad to see Suisei is handling things well and even helping her fans out to teach her to be more careful about handling rumors and such going forward. Thanks for the subs!

These people are naïve if they think they can annoy her so much with this, I still remember that collab of hers with Matsuri where she started imitating Coco to provoke those antis who were chasing Coco and throwing bots into the chat of any stream where Coco appeared, if Suisei wasn't afraid to provoke those antis these ones now are a joke compared to them. perhaps one of the reasons she decided to act at once was because I noticed some of these individuals mentioning other members, especially Miko, and knowing Suisei she must not have liked that very much.

It's because of loopholes in their logic like this (not at all taking Anemachi into consideration, for one) that plainly show most that spread the rumor aren't viewers/fans of her at all. There are also those that say Anemachi doesn't exist at all which is hilarious considering the amount of times Sui has explicitly talked to her on stream. If someone wants to prove something desperately, they fall into the trap of confirmation bias, prompting the phrase "People will believe what they want to believe"

This is the first I've heard of this but given what I've learned from 2020-2021, I knew I needed it translated by someone reliable. So then you and Yura had to deliver. Hats off to you both. Rumors suck and not enough people apply critical fact finding skills to figure things out but the correct course of action is not to believe someone else's words over the person themselves. Thankfully all I use Twitter for is art so this escaped my timeline.

A joint clip of Yuna and Yura? This is clear evidence that they're the same person! .... Is an example of how it is. Information is a lethal weapon, regardless of it being true or not. That's why rather than outright denying it, Suisei simply lay out her perspective and her side of the story, without any denial or confirmations because it's a rather delicate situation, especially when she's moving out of her current place. She just left everyone to believe what they wanted to believe, and have full trust on the staff as well as her fans. As someone with trust issues, that's something *very* difficult for me to do. And since she even thought of it all the way to the possibility that there are people that still wouldn't believe her own side of the story, I think she's very prepared on this. Everyone can just keep on supporting her, returning the trust she put on everyone.

Sui-chan tactfully handled this very professionally and even considered our own well-being as fans. I'm sure a lot of people will be feeling relieved after the stream. If you have no idea about what Sui-chan was talking about here, you can just move on and not bother looking into it. It was a nothingburger. As usual of the internet, something that was really nothing was blown out of proportion into a convoluted mess of speculation. Be careful of what you read on the internet and at the same time, be careful of what you speculate publicly as it can escalate very quickly.

With the rapidly growing technology of AI we really need to be extra careful. I know for fact that hoshiyomi can differentiate between the actual voice and AI voice. But most likely people who are new will going to believe that information.
