the way he played the third piece was impressive, at un poco mosso section, most pianists would rushing the tempo so fast, but he played it calmly and makes it sounds so gorgeous

So many people hating on his interpretation but its by far the best i heard. I listened to most suite bergamasque recordings on KZfaq and imo Arrau's unrivaled. There is no such slow interpretation the man is a legend tbh. Btw listen to Debussy playing his own claire de lune lol. Tell him its too fast 😂

Just today my piano teacher told me to start learning the piece. I'm 13, and istg it looks and sounds so hard to learn. After hearing other interpretations I was so surprised by how fast it sounded, because it made the piece sound not as relaxing as my teacher played it and killed my further inside. This interpretation however, made me feel like I was in heaven, and made me more relieved.

I was just now talking to someone who said they were interested in this piece but wanted to learn something more technically challenging. I pointed out, among other things, that elements of "musicality", like tone, phrasing, voicing, and pedaling are just as much parts of piano technique as playing fast notes. I told them, if they like this and have the time, they should learn it! It's fine to play this slowly if that's how you truly feel it should go.

why pianists play 1st piece too fast despite the tempo is rubato ?? It is moderato!!!
@Eorzat
@Eorzat 7 жыл бұрын
"Moderato" has about a 10-15 BPM range of interpretation. Arrau is taking it at the absolute slowest extreme for Moderato whereas most pianists take it to the higher end. I would say that Gieseking takes it to the absolute fastest extreme.

This score probably comes from a Durand edition from around the turn of the 20th century. This is public domain nowadays, and can be downloaded at IMSLP; Dover also has a reprint of this edition for a reasonable price, compiling a bunch of very worthy Debussy works into a neatly-bound volume called "Piano Music 1888-1905".

Why the bleep is Debussy´s music called impressionism? In this great & solid piece he relies heavily on Bachs Solo-suites. (be it for violin, cello or Lute). Further recognizable are chinese pentatonics & things resembling the style of Fauré. Of course Claire de lune serves as school example of "impressionism", but such impressions can be found already in Chopins Preludes. Do I deny Debussy being a great composer? Not at all: If progress means to combine older elements in a new & prolific way, that´s exactly what happened in Suite bergamesque.
@littlekiwi9724
@littlekiwi9724 7 жыл бұрын
Certainly this work could be classified "neoclassical" what with the use of terms like Suite, Prelude, Minuet and Passepied. Wow, his Claire de Lune is amazing - never heard it so slow.

His works are considered impressionistic, because they paralleled the art movements at the time. The impressionistic qualities come out especially in the use of the pedals, creating these huge, beautiful tonal washes and the slight sense of not having as iron clad of a tonal centre as previous music through the use of whole tone scales. A really good example of one of his impressionist works is Nuages, which is stunning by the way. So instead of having a very clear, equally weighted structure like Bach or Beethoven, who are both amazing, Debussy strives more for this beautiful blend between ideas. Being labeled an impressionist doesn't make him a poor composer, most of my favourite composers are in the impressionist era because their works have this wonderful, hazy, dreamlike quality that I often don't get in early works were I get a very vivid, non-hazy mental image. His music also doesn't really parallel the romantic movement, because that movement focused more on: darker, supernatural and more "icky feelings" that was being written about at the time such as works by Göethe. It's the same reason that while Beethoven may be considered the father of Romantic music, he isn't actually considered broadly to be a romantic composer as he still maintained far more elements of the classical era, which he just pushed further and inspired other composers to break from some of the "rigidity" of the classical forms of composition. Because of Debussy's works I aspire to be able to write in the impressionist style, because of it's beauty and tonal quality. TL;DR Just because a piece is impressionistic doesn't mean it's not great or solid and can't lean on older styles, it's based on how influenced the composer was by current music trends. i.e much of Handel's life was in the classical era, but he is very much a Baroque composer.
@1DriftingAimlessly
@1DriftingAimlessly 7 жыл бұрын
I struggle to say that any of his works can be considered romantic because of the Harmonic Syntax, it doesn't line up with what was occurring in the romantic era, enough. There may be a hint of romanticism here or there, but you'll be hard pressed to find a music history scholar willing to title any of his works as romantic because of my aforementioned reasons.
@1DriftingAimlessly
@1DriftingAimlessly 7 жыл бұрын
I still have to say this is more impressionist then late romantic, amicably agree to disagree? :) I've really enjoyed this little comment thread btw.

The chord is rolled, i.e. arpeggio, but very quickly. Traditionally, the directive is understood as rolled from the lowest note and ascending; if the roll is from top to bottom, a small arrow head pointing down will be at the bottom of the marking.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the tempo in this piece. It's always interesting to hear different perspectives on musical elements. Music is a beautiful art form precisely because it allows for various interpretations. Tempo, just like many other aspects of music, can be quite subjective and depends a lot on personal taste and emotional connection. In this piece, the artist might have chosen specific tempos to convey a particular mood or emotion. Some may appreciate a faster pace for the energy it brings, while others might prefer a slower tempo for a more reflective and deliberate feel. It's like looking at a painting; different people might see different things or feel different emotions. Similarly, everyone brings their unique perspective to music, and that's what makes discussions like these so enriching. It's awesome that you're actively engaging with the music and sharing your thoughts! Remember, there's no right or wrong when it comes to musical preferences. It's all about what resonates with you personally.
