This is so very true. When I started at my job almost 16 years ago, people called me 'crazy workaholic with no life" because I was always the first in and the last out. I worked through lunch and stayed late almost every night. My office was my haven and I was always there hustling. Today, I come and go whenever I feel like it and nobody, NOBODY questions if I get my work done. Today I no longer need to bust my butt, I ride on reputation alone. Today I only work an easy 40-hour week but make 100-hour paychecks!

I love hearing that it works out for some. I'm self employed and loving it, but there's no way of getting around putting in the hard work.. no matter what you decide to do. Hard work pays off.

Does that mean we should be wearing a suit when we are at networking events too?

Birak IT I always used to when I was in tax. Depends on your industry. Better to overdress than underdress. It says something about you and the way you go about everything, including the work you might do for someone in the room considering hiring you Baldeep.

What does it mean

It means if you lag behind from the very start you'll never get ahead. Get ahead from Day 1 and stay ahead. The 8-ball is some American analogy about the game of pool.

“Behind the 8 Ball” - in the most popular variant of billiards, each player must pocket all 7 of the balls in their group before calling a shot for the 8 ball, which belongs to neither player. If you pocket the 8 ball before your group is pocketed, you forfeit that game. So being ‘behind the 8 ball’ indicates that you’re not only starting wrong, but that you risk losing right away. By going for a closing move too soon, by arranging your priorities to impress others rather than handling the smaller, less exciting details first, you risk everything. Harvey’s remark is also a pun on being “behind” (the 8 ball, i.e. closing move) precluding you from being “in front” - that is, in a position of advancement.
