-- Can Stress And Anxiety Cause Physical Pain? --
Do you carry your stress in your shoulders?
Or suffer from neck tension and pain?
Maybe you’ve stretched or gotten massages to relieve these areas, but the tight muscles just won’t let go.
That’s emotions and pain go hand in hand. Just doing a bunch of stretches for back pain or tight shoulders or what have you without addressing the underlying neurological cause of muscle tension and pain will keep you stuck, frustrated and probably in pain for years to come.
In this video I talk about the neuroscience behind the mind-body connection.
Because yes, emotions *do* cause physical pain, but not the way most people think they do.
Check out the video to learn more about how stress and anxiety cause chronic pain and what you need to do to get relief.

I have burning sensations in my entire body and extreme nerve pain all over which disables me if I don’t take gabapentin and Nortriptyline everyday. The docs say it’s stress related looking at my reports all clear. I don’t know how to get out of my situation anymore. Very depressed with regards to my health but always hopeful to find a cure. Please suggest if you know of a plan I could follow to recover. I may be having central sensitisation.

Dear Sukie, Thank you so much for all of your videos. I have binged through quite many of them during last weeks. You have a great ability to explain things in such an easy and fun way. I have been burnout twice during last 9 years and depressed and broke my leg, etc. And during these years I have been searching for ways to get better, to understand what is happening in my mind and body. The doctors and psychologists I have been to could help just some. But they did not look at the body level nore the reason to my state. I am feeling so much better now thanks to my own research and work on myself. And what you teach here is resonating so much to what I have learned. I think many more people would benefit from your knowledge. Thank you so much for teaching this and inspiring us and helping us heal. With love, Diana 💖

I was experiencing tinnitus for a number of months..I found that if I was engaged in my art work or another deeply focusing activity it disappeared. It would come back to me at bed time and the morning upon waking. But I told myself I could manage it because I knew i had an ability to get into flow and not be noticing it. Eventually it disappeared completely...or I have learned to not notice it..Not sure which is going on. So fascinating.

In 1 video you just answered so many questions I had about my perceptions and body sensations. Like the connection between the cerebelum and conscious thoughts explain why when I had social anxiety I would get tension around my eyes as soon as I became self conscious. The same was true when I would twink my eyes consciously I would get into an anxious state. Or sometimes when I'm anxious I get strange physical sensations and it feels like I get aware of my own subconscious body processes like feeling the connexion between my hands and brain when playing the piano and feeling kind of on autopilot. Very strange feeling indeed but it makes so much sense now.So I wanted to say thank you

@Spooky Action at a Distance - this was a revelation to me too. The first time that I recall feeling so aware of my physical body that I found it difficult to walk and keep my balance, was after a series of emotional and physical traumas in my life. We moved, my dad left us, I went to a new school, I had really bad flu, and also was sexually abused. I remember trying to walk into the school assembly and feeling that my head wasn't properly balanced on my body and that my steps weren't in time/synchronized properly. I still have dreams where I try to walk or run but my steps won't come with any rhythm and get mixed up. I suffer from chronic pain and anxiety that prevents me from working. I will definitely be looking into these theories with the hope of regaining some fitness and getting my life back.

Thanks Sukie. My yogi name is Sukh. Really struggling these days. Getting old( 62). Feeling like I'm in fight flight all the time. Much pain, confusion, anxiety, heart palpitations (racing over 200 beats a minute) sleep deprived on and on. Doctors think I'm nuts. I know better. They want to treat symptoms, not knowing the cause. Oh , also inflammation, eczema.... I was able to manage all this when younger but not so much now. I used to joke that my ego decision making was askew, no acually dysfunctional at best. It made me homeless twice last year, and is responsible for quitting many jobs. Almost lost my job by quitting last week. Short story, my boss caught on and and is trying to get me a permanent position which will give me benefits. Still in fight flight and would run if I could could(I'm not a fighter) Doc Berry said . No difference between anxiety and excitement, it's all about how one frames it. Thanks for you Sukie.

That might sound weird but because I really connected with the energy work, it works for me.

Thanks for this video I have a strange case relating to this or so I think. I’ve had lower back problems for over 20 years, so much stress relating to this. I’ll cut my story right down but about 3 years ago, I suddenly couldn’t tolerate different footwear… anything different to what I have got used to causes me extreme discomfort in my lower back … literally just standing up in unaccustomed footwear will do this ,it’s really stressful. Hadn’t given this any thought until my physio mentioned it might be psychosomatic… I was shocked but now I’m starting to think it might be. The pain and discomfort to me is 100% real. Any videos I could watch to help me with this? Would really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction… thanks Scans and tests have come back fine.

This is empowering, but also annoying because I’ve been focusing heavily on overcoming chronic pain/tight muscles and anxiety disorders for 13 years and I’m exhausted. I’ve dedicated my entire 20’s to my health. Lost 100lbs, went vegan, journaled all my emotions, got a therapist, started walking/jogging/stretching daily, and nothing helped. Then I discovered Dr. John Sarno’s work on chronic pain and started doing even more mind/body work. I’m still in pain. Still chronically tense. Still anxious.
@SukieBaxter
@SukieBaxter 3 жыл бұрын
I totally hear you. I have met and worked with a lot of people who are doing all the right things but feeling frustrated. To be totally honest, I'm not a huge fan of Sarno's work. I think he was stepping in the right direction, but a lot of his writing comes off -- at least to me -- as a bypass as well as dismissive of some very real, very limiting symptoms experienced by a person. It has been a while since I read the book, but if I remember correctly, I felt that it was heavy on the mind-over-matter aspect. I find this a lot in mindfulness or mind-body connection practices. It's a subtle difference to talk to the brain through sensory awareness, but a powerful shift. I hope you're able to do a few of the somatic practices and meditations here and get some relief.

@@SukieBaxter sarno wasn’t just a mind over matter guy imo .. he had two points. Some was simply book cures (mind over matter if you will, but really education leading to safety) but he was also very much about the inner fight between what we want vs what others want. That’s what I took away as the core emotional issues. But that’s only one type of chronic pain trigger imo. I don’t agree with everything he wrote by any stretch btw, but for me he was on the right path with some of it. Chronic pain comes in different ways though for me. I had episodes which were emotionally triggered and releasing emotions I wasn’t allowing solved the pain. I also had much longer term pain which was helped by somatic methods. Others were just about health anxiety and solved by a more “butler” style DIM and SIM approach, which I guess is what you might mean as mind over matter? Allodynia was solved by bravery leading to retraining of my nervous system pain responses. I literally distracted. But that’s before I knew some other stuff. I’ve had it all and resolved nearly everything with a combination of approaches. We are definitely learning .. but there is more to learn yet. My stomach issues (IBS) still aren’t fully resolved though. That continues to trouble me. But I’ll carry on working!

There are alot of different brands, Ive found them on Amazon, Walmart. They helped after my heart ablation procedure, I was sooo scared and my dog was diagnosed with heartworms a week ago and if I take the chamomile I can stop crying and plan for her treatment. Does this apply to or do you have any advice/videos on menstrual period pain. I mean crazy pain where one faints and vomits from the pain.

One of the most disturbing feeling I had is to feel pain in part of my tongue like if I had multiple glass crystals in it. It lasted for several days. There is no other explanation than anxiety in my case.

@@YT-bz8dr do some meditation and it helped me a lot , also try to do things slowly and concentrate while ur doing things slow it helps gain control of your emotions. Exercise when ever possible that helps also to gain control of everything you are feeling, just remember this process takes time I hope this helps

We were nine women in a group for women who had survived abuse in a close relationship. It was interesting that everyone had severe pain in the left shoulder. There must be a correlation.

Unfortunately doctors usually don’t learn this type of approach. You can try to find someone who has done training in this field but it takes some searching.

You did not talk about the brain causing actual pain by constant bracing muscle tension. Also there is a mechanism called TMS as explained by Sarno in his book Healing back pain. It looks like it's not only a question of amplification. Many times I had total nonsense pain at places where there is no reason.
