This song triggers a vehicle memory for me, too. Mine is being on a Sunday evening drive with my parents and older sister. I remember thinking, "This song is beautiful, but a little sad, just like the sunset. I want to memorize this moment so I can relive how it feels forever." And obviously, it worked.

I've heard this song over the years on the classic oldies station I listen to and I loved it since I first time heard it. About 2 months ago, I chose this song to begin teaching my young Dalmatian to dance to with me. Recently I watched the heartbreaking animation of JAL 123 but didn't know he was on the plane during that tragic event and I got a little choked up when I found out he was. The song has become even more special now.

Hi there Ellis. This is a really beautiful tribute film that you've put together. I have seen several documentaries & films about him including the NHK World show. It always struck me just what an outpouring of sad emotions there were when he passed, especially as i saw him billed several times As the 'Happiest man in the World' because of that beautiful beaming smile that he always seemed to have on his face. I am sure there are many people around the world who are just like me. We feel happiness in our hearts and it brings us joy to hear it, but at the same time we listen with a tear in our eye. Long may Kyu Sakamoto & 'Sukiyaki' ( Ue A Muite Aruko ) be heard all around the world. Sending love from London to 'Sukiyaki' lovers everywhere 💙💙💙

Oh my, that was a terrible accident. The US Marines flew nearby and prepared to help but were told to return to base. The Defense forces of Japan figuring everyone was dead took an extra day to get help there. Many passengers lived through the crash but not through the night. Boeing did a substandard repair that caused the decompression and damage to the hydraulics. The world lost a beautiful singer.

Love this song. I'm 84 and it just gets better as I get older. The best I can remember about the song is that it's about a young man who is in prison who is going to be executed. The part where he rubs his eyes etc, is where he says I cry as I walk. It was quite some time ago that I saw the story about the song. If anyone has more to add sure it would be appreciated.

I think you have confused it with Unchained Melody. This was much darker and more political- "Ue o Muite Arukō" (pronounced [ɯe o mɯite aɾɯkoꜜː]) was written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears will not fall, with the verses describing his memories and feelings. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from participating in the 1960 Anpo protests against the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, expressing his frustration and dejection at the failed efforts to stop the treaty. However, the lyrics were purposefully generic so that they might refer to any lost love. Most of the Japanese audience at the time would have grasped the true meaning.
