In 2009, a lone pilot whale was stranded on a Curaçao beach. Fortunately, he was rescued by the staff of the Curaçao Sea Aquarium. They named him Sully and spent months nursing him back to health. After being successfully rehabilitated, Sully refused to go back to the wild and was adopted by Sea World San Diego. Jonathan learns what was wrong with Sully and what had to be done to save him.
This is an HD upload of a segment originally uploaded in 2012.

The pilot whale’s name is Sully, and his story began in July of 2009, when he stranded on a Curaçao beach. But he was incredibly lucky to land there, since it’s home to the Curaçao Sea Aquarium-one of the few places in the entire Caribbean with the facilities and expertise to care for him.
George Kieffer, the president of the Southern Caribbean Cetacean Network was quick to respond when he got a telephone call alerting him to the stranded pilot whale on a beach only ten minutes from his office.
He had swam right out of the bay and could come back in the bay again, so I don’t think he was disoriented. I think it was one of those situations where this animal is physically incapable of keeping himself at the surface so, I think a lot of times these animals will strand because they just don’t want to drown, you know? And if they can support themselves in the shallows, that’s what they’re looking to do.
The Sea Aquarium staff immediately sprung into action. Because Sully was too weak to stay afloat on his own, they used foam pool floats to help support his weight, and lots of human helpers.
Next, they needed to get some fluids into him because he was so dehydrated. Using a funnel attached to a plastic tube in his mouth, they poured fresh water right into his system. Although Sully lives in the sea and is surrounded by water, he can’t drink any of it because it's salty. He gets all his fresh water in the fish and squid he normally eats. If he hasn’t been eating, he hasn’t been drinking either. Without lots of water fast, his kidneys would fail.
Once Sully was hydrated, George decided to see if he would eat anything. The dolphins at the Sea Aquarium like Herring, so George brought over a bucket of herring to try on Sully. He wasn’t sure if the whale would accept food from him.
But Sully was hungry and he gulped down the fish from George. He got so excited that they had a hard time keeping a hold on him!
Within only a few days, Sully gained a lot of strength and looked like he was ready to swim by himself. The floatation devices were removed one at a time, and Sully swam on his own! But his road to recovery had only just begun.
Within a few weeks, Sully was strong enough that he was getting rambunctious.
George and the Sea Aquarium staff led Sully out to a pod of pilot whales to make an introduction.
Unfortunately, Sully had no interest. He looked at the pod, and swam right back to the boat. Once again, he followed them straight back to his pen. Clearly, Sully had no intention of going back to the wild, but nobody knew why.
Unfortunately, Sully couldn’t stay in his pen. First of all it was designed to be temporary, and the volunteers couldn’t watch him forever. And, he was eating 60-70 pounds of fish every day. The Sea Aquarium couldn’t afford to keep feeding him! They had to find another facility to take care of Sully. Someplace with the space and resources to handle a hungry pilot whale.
Fortunately, Sea World in San Diego offered Sully a permanent home. Soon George and his staff were preparing Sully for his first airplane ride.
Using a sling, they loaded Sully onto a truck carrying a custom-made tank that would keep Sully in the water for his entire journey-over 3,000 miles!
Soon the truck departed from the Curacao Sea Aquarium for the airport.
George and several volunteers went along to help out. During the flight, they took turns pouring water onto Sully to keep him cool and relaxed at 30,000 feet.
In an effort to learn why Sully stranded, the Hubbs SeaWorld Marine Institute got together with the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program to test his hearing. Using sophisticated gear, they found the answer. Sully can’t hear above 10 kHz. A normal pilot whale should be able to hear up to at least 100 kHz. So basically, Sully is hard of hearing. And without being able to hear those really high frequencies, he can’t hunt using his echolocation in the deep ocean. Without being able to catch anything to eat, Sully was slowly starving to death.

On May 23rd, 2012 Sully the pilot whale took his last breath in SeaWorld San Diego’s Animal Care facility, three years after he was found emaciated on a Curacao beach. His life was short, at an estimated age of 4 years he was still a juvenile.

@@Bobspineable did you miss the part where Sully was nursed back to health and deemed healthy enough to be released into the wild but he just didn't want to for whatever reason? He wasn't taken care of by Sea World when he was sick - that was a different organization. Sea World got him when he was nice and healthy but Sea World is renowned for how awful they are to ther animals (walruses in warm water, separating baby dolphins from mothers and getting them killed by strangers, one word: orcas, et cetera). It wouldn't exactly be a shock if Sully was yet another victim of theirs. I get the rescue organization couldn't take care of him but damn does it suck that Sea World got hold of him instead of a proper, responsible aquarium or something, that's all. He may very well still be alive today if so, albeit maybe not since maybe he just had health problems or something.

@@iqualityclub both can be true at the same time. Sea World is notorious with how bad they are with their animals and not just their orcas either. Obviously he couldn't be released into the wild properly but it does suck there wasn't a better permanent rescue center that could take him. Sea World's infamous neglect could have made his health problems worse after all (key word: could. I'm not saying he was definitely neglected or abused. Sea World is just a red flag).

Thank you for listing his cause of death. I knew it couldn't have been sunburn because they could have used zinc oxide to prevent sunburn. Yes, some people don't pay attention to the fact that if he can't hear he can't eat. The orca, Morgan in Tenerife had the same problem. She stranded because she was emaciated because she couldn't hear, therefore she couldn't eat. Because of the controversy they are now opting for the euthanasia off stranded whales. There have been several whales been euthanized already because of the cost and logistics of rehabilitation.

Why do people anyways have to throw their religious crap in every sentence. There's a thousand other ways you could have made your statement but instead you use "god bless". Not everyone follows your religion. Neither do a lot of people's kids so why do they have to be subjected to your religious belief. I don't write mine down because I'm not pushing and I don't assume that everyone wants to hear it. You certainly wouldn't want your kids to hear my beliefs so stop forcing your region on other people and keep it between you and your friends. KZfaq is not the place for you to be telling people to "God Bless". It's disgusting when a person can't have a simple conversation without bringing up God or Jesus. It's very cult like behavior and you are wrong for assuming other people wouldn't be offended by your comments.

People who see Dolphins , Orcas , Whales etc. perform at the Aquarium for the crowd feel bad for the aquatic animals because they think the animal is trapped and needs freedom . Although some part of it is true , but many don't know that some aquatic animals like the Pilot Whale - Sully cannot go back to the wild because they can't use echolocation to hunt for their food . This makes them dependent on someone to feed them for the entire life . A pilot whale can hear up to ONE HUNDRED KILOHERTZ?!?!?! For the sake of simplifying what that means, the highest frequency humans can hear is just shy of TWENTY kilohertz. In the 60's and 70's I couldn't deal with going to department stores like Sears, Hecht Co., etc. Their security systems used a super-high frequency....... like a dog whistle in scream mode. Also VERY interesting is the fact they can dehydrate...... never occurred to me they can't and don't "drink" the water. Great show here...... love the entire whale/porpoise sector of fauna :) Seeing so much handling with bare hands, I recall at Xcaret, Mexico we'd bought a few minutes with a bottlenose dolphin...... of COURSE we're compelled to touch them, but the woman in charge snapped "do NOT TOUCH him!!!!!". Oh..... maybe I need to upgrade my $20 ticket?

Exactly! Although these people were very compassionate. They went about it completely wrong. I understand hand feeding him for the first few times until he gained some strength back. They really should have released live fish around for him to catch on his own. There was too much human contact and they most definitely should not have taught him to follow boats. He could have gotten his exercises from hunting and chasing his fish. They tamed him, and got him too used to food comi g to him. Of cours he wouldnt go back out in the wild. That being said, in his particular case, with his loss of hearing. It is understandable that he was unable regardless. However, they didnt know that until way later amd still shouldnt have done it the way they did to begin with. Guys. He may have been waiting for his seasonal pod to come near again. Or until he heard rumor of them on his daily outings offshore! The pod they brought him to most likely was not his family/pod! I think it would have been better for him to let him stay at least a couple years before sending him to Seaworld. Aquariums are beautiful and fine most of the time but I recently saw a "show" on youtube taken from seaworld and the conditions were really bad! I think it was the one in California and I do not know the conditions at the other. But as he was obviously happy where he was if its not broken why try to fix it? He may have been sounding for his pod while going on his daily swim offshore. He may be lost and not know where his pod is. He may simply like the new conditions far more than being alone in the great semi- desert of the open ocean. I think he lost his pod and he then was unable to gain food so easy and became depressed and didn't care to eat without his family/pod. You should have let him stay longer. He no doubt loved the company of another kind and intelligent species. To whales we can be somewhat like gods to them. Then there they are blessing him with unlimited fish. I think they should've let him stay until there was a good reason not to. Plus whales are so intelligent I mean his emotional love towards these people may have become like a new family a new pod to him in which case to send him away would be cruel. For all we know his pod was killed or broken up by storm or evil people etc... Seriously if they had opened up a paypal account online and explained Sully's unique situation you would've gained more than enough money to keep him fed and happy! No! It was California that took him! Not good at all. So he is semi-deaf. Well that explains alot. But I still do not agree with sending him to San Diego. They should've kept him at the original spot started an online donation account to feed him and kept taking him offshore daily.

Know what, credit where it's due: Sea world took him in and cared for him. Now we watch Black Fish and hate SeaWorld. I'm not against dolphins performing, but let them because they want to not because they have too. Put the animals first. Id personally just be happy seeing these animals, they don't need to perform for me. Glad to see that SeaWorld does do SOME good atleast

@@kristianxoto Not necessarily it really depends but in this case certainly. I'd guess that a big factor here is that dolphins don't. make a kill collectively to share but rather hunt their own prey which they eat immediatly. They might employ team strategies but if you can't catch your food you are out of luck.

The animals love to do behaviors, my family member was a trainer at sea world and as soon as fans would fill the seats the Orcas and dolphins would be waiting at the gates eager to perform and do behaviors it’s also enriching for them. As you can tell all of these dolphins orcas in pilot whales are fat and healthy. They can’t be forced to do anything, I have gone to shows at sea world where they tell the people sorry the whales want to take a day off today and then there’s other days where they can’t wait to get out and perform so, I think it would be more cruel and they were just floating around in a tank doing nothing

Even though intentions were good, I fail to see how removing him from good fresh ocean water of his original home, to a chlorinated small pool was good for him, compared to his original access to open ocean. And if Sea world was willing to shell out for 60 lbs of fish a day, how come they couldn't give that to him in Curaçao? The excuse was made that the original folks couldn't afford to keep feeding him, yet thousands had to be spent flying him to Sea World. Something seems... fishy here.
@BlueWorldTV
@BlueWorldTV 6 жыл бұрын
Not really, if you watch the episode carefully, all that is explained. They did not have the facilities to take care of him in Curacao. The pool at Sea World is not chlorinated...the animals can't be in chlorinated water. Sea World was willing to take him and try to help him. I don't see why everyone wants to make Sea World the bad guy in this. This whale had an inability to catch food because his ears didn't work right and they hunt with echolocation. He was starving to death. He would have died within a few days if he had not been rescued. Once they knew he couldn't ever catch food because of his hearing, they knew he could never be released. And he did not want to be released. He followed the boat home every time. So they could either put him down or try to find a place that would feed him forever. It cost hundreds of dollars a day just to feed him, never mind all the other care. Now we can certainly say that Sea World did something wrong in terms of sun protection, which is really sad because it led to a skin infection. But at least they tried to save him.

Whatever their rehabilitation program consists of, it cannot undo the damage they knowingly did to the Orca in their care. Nothing can ever change that. Sea World COULD choose to work along side scientists to establish sea pens for the Orca and dolphin, and work together to help release their animals. THAT would help rehabilitate their reputation. But, they won't. It's because they bring in $$$. Ergo, they are still motivated by MONEY and not what is truly best for the animals. I call bullshit on that program. And the "media" that you speak of consisted of a documentary made by former SW employees and people who study wild Orca and can tell the natural behavior/happy behavior from misery and self-injury. Orca self-injure at that place. The tanks are too small, they don't get the stimulation they need (performing isn't stimulation for them, it's WORK), they don't get many of their fundamental needs met. Just the basic ones and even then, barely. It's not propaganda, it's truth. So, the only ones lying here is Sea World because they have everything to lose by being honest. If their tourists knew that the animals generally only live to half the age they would in the wild, in captivity, they'd stop supporting that business. If the tourists knew that the animals chew on the concrete of their tanks and wear their teeth down.....and are subject to bullying from the other Orca (who generally get along very well in the WILD), if they knew that the flopped over dorsal fins and the behavior at the parks are so different from the behavior you see in wild Orca.....they'd stop supporting SW. Of course SW is not going to be honest about anything. It would kill their business. And that's what it is. A business. Not a sanctuary, not a rehab. A business and is listed as such on the stock market. Sanctuaries aren't listed on the stock market. Only lucrative, money pulling businesses are. That's their motivation and this smoke and mirrors with Sully is to try and fool people back into thinking they actually care about the animals. If you care about an animal, you respect its right to freedom.....not force it to perform for food and allow it to self-injure itself and other people.

Morgans permit was for rehab and release! Not exhibition and breeding. There are lots of permit violations and what Loro Parque has done is beyond disgusting! And its disgusting that you cant see that. There is no proof that Morgan is deaf, the marine park wont let any outside vet test her. She was bullied and attacked daily by the other captive killer whales (which is highly unnatural in killer whale society). Also Ula has a major deformity and infection to her pectoral flippers. You should actually learn about what is going on with this orca before believing what this marine park says. www.freemorgan.org/

They don't abuse their animals, but cetaceans have never and at this rate will never be able to thrive in small chemically treated pools with concrete walls. It's so unfortunate to see people defending them tooth and nail. For what? So you don't feel bad about going there yourself? Not everyone just buys what blackfish says, many people do research after seeing the film and realize just how detrimental the conditions at marine parks are to cetacean health. Blackfish is by no means the full story. Do your research.
