In real history, Sultan Ahmet really didn't like Safiye Sultan. As soon as he ascended the throne, he exiled Safiye Sultan to the Old Palace. Safiye Sultan lost all her power and lived in the Old Palace until her death, but continued to receive a salary. After Safiye Sultan was exiled to the Old Palace, she lived a passive life.

I wouldn't mind living her passive life in the old palace....especially she she used to receive a stipend of 3000 aspers a day...Even though Ahmed didn't seem to like her, he never took away her wealth and she died as the richest sultana in the Ottoman dynasty....this alone makes me think that Ahmed banished her for political reasons and not for personal reasons ( probably she started interfering in political affairs)...Once she was exiled, Ahmed continued to treat her with respect and allowed her to live her luxurious life till her death....

@@danielmathai4780 First of all, I must state that I am from Turkey. I am a history graduate and I am an expert on the history of the Ottoman Empire. Safiye Sultan was exiled to the Old Palace on January 10, 1604 and died in 1619. We know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about what Safiye Sultan was doing in the Old Palace. Neither contemporary Ottoman sources (chronicles) nor contemporary Venetian and European ambassadors give ANY information about Safiye Sultan between 1604 and 1619. If Safiye Sultan had lived an active life, Venetian ambassadors would certainly have given information about her. Safiye Sultan continued to receive a salary of 3000 asper a day, it is true, but she lost her other sources of income. In addition to the daily salary, the Valide Sultans were allocated tax revenues of some villages and towns. These were called "pashmaklık" or "has". Since Safiye Sultan lost her "Valide Sultan" title, she lost all her "pashmaklık" and "has" incomes. Therefore, we cannot claim that she lived a very rich and luxurious life in the Old Palace. In addition, Safiye Sultan even lost the title of "Sultan" when she was exiled to the Old Palace. In the Ottoman archives, we learn that two "Valide Kadın" lived in the Old Palace. These were the retired Valide Sultans Safiye and Halime. Safiye's title in the Old Palace was "Valide Kadın". The Valide Kadın means "The Valide Woman" or "The Valide Lady". It would be absurd to think that a woman who has even lost the title of "Sultan" leads an politically active life.

The Stockholm Syndrome is ripe in that Empire. It’s amazing how these slaves seem to love and worship their Kidnappers/Masters/Jailers. One could do an interesting Thesis on their whole Society.

i mean they came in at a very young age and was not even exposed to outside world. If they rebel and get expelled then what can they do? I am sure they might hate their ruler, even kosem might have but they have to put up an act to survive.

As another commenter mentioned, they came in as slaves at a very young age. The initital part of their training spanned years and included indoctrination and civilian education. Afterwards, when they were fully indoctrinated did they receive training as concubines (for the girls) at which point, their only goal was to become the mother of a prince which meant in their eyes a super easy and quick route to immense political, economic and finanacial power. It also helped that centuries of having beautiful women in their harems, the Ottoman Princes and Sultans were quite handsome in their own right. As for the males, enuchs or otherwise, again the initial part is the same, entering at a young age and being indoctrinated but later on it sort off became their life. They formed friendships, relationships, rivalries and so on and lived life. Just because they were slaves did not automatically mean a life of misery and improverishment, rather they often lived better than most peasants and could even join the aristocratic class. Overall, the slavery of the Islamic empires, especially the Ottoman empires was very different from that practiced in many other places (the main example that comes to my mind is european slavery of the triangular trade.). The slaves of Islamic empires typically were either harem slaves or military slaves, in each case the slaves were treated far better than what one might suspect them to be. Concubines and military slaves had to be treated well in order for them to be at their peak condition (try starving your elite slave soldiers, it is not gonna end well or if you want to have a beautiful woman as your concubine but if you don't dress her well or finance her cosmetics you will quickly be ridiclued for being "poor" or a "miser").

Actual history states that Safiye was never penniless....she was the richest sultana in the whole of the Ottoman dynasty......while she was Valide Sultana and even after her retirement to the old palace, she enjoyed an enormous stipend of 3,000 aspers a day. In comparison, during Mustafa's reign, when Halime was Valide Sultan, Kosem was only given a stipend of 1000 aspers while she resided in the old palace.....

Safiye continued to receive a salary of 3000 asper, but she lost her the "pashmaklık" and "has" incomes, which were the most important sources of income for a female sultan. Taxes of some villages and towns and some customs duties were allocated to Valide Sultans. These revenues were called "pashmaklık" or "has". What really made a Valide Sultan rich was her "pashmaklık" and "has" incomes. To give an example, Kösem Sultan's annual income was 24 million aspers. Of these 24 million aspers, only 1,080,000 aspers came from Kösem's daily salary of 3000 aspers. Most of Kösem's annual income, that is, 22,920,000 asper, came from her "pashmaklık" and "has" incomes. When Safiye Sultan lost her title of "Valide Sultan", she lost all her "pashmaklık" and "has" incomes and had to settle for only her daily salary of 3000 aspers.

@@metehangediz3926 well....let's look at the facts, Eski Sarayi was a luxurious palace despite it being shown as a depressing palace in all the television dramas...the only thing that Safiye Sultan would have missed is the loss of power and the pomp of being Valide Sultan...all of Safiye Sultan's daily needs would have been already taken care of by the state exchequer as part of the daily running of Eski Sarayi....Since she was no longer Valide Sultan, her retinue would have definitely reduced which in turn would have reduced her expenses....the 3000 aspers would have been like pocket money for her....

In the harem, the Valide Sultan (Sultan's mother, aka Handan Sultan) had the most power. The next powerful was the Haseki Sultan (Sultan's favorite, aka Kosem Sultan). There had never been a Valide Sultan who survived into the reign of her grandson before Safiye Sultan, so there was no precedent for what should be done in that scenario. She essentially had no place in the new structure, so she attempted to maintain her position and manner of living, which caused strife between her and Handan Sultan.
