In this episode we bring you the origins of the Sumerians with none other than the geneticist Razib Khan.
In this episode Mr. Khan explains passionately that if we could genetically type any ancient People, he would choose the Sumerians. Why? Because these are arguably the first historic nation. The first self-conscious ethnic group which operated by the rules which we define as the fundamentals of literate civilization. Strangely, they are an ethno-linguistic isolate.
He goes on to explain what the term ethno-linguistic isolate means and how it applies to these ancient peoples, who even though they interacted with their neighbors stood apart from their Semitic neighbors like the Akkadians until later they became absorbed entirely through military and cultural conquests but that their legacy stays with us today in various forms including how we tell time.
He goes on to explain what his original model was for the origins of the Sumerians and how it changed over time and why?
What does his current model tell us about the Sumerians and their origins and foundation within ancient Mesopotamia?
Why are we struggling to genetically type populations in modern Iraq and Iran? How has Covid 19 made studying ancient history and peoples harder?
And finally, Mr. Khan hits us with his predictions of what we will learn the next decade when it comes to ancient DNA studies.

They called themselves the black HEADED people.That does not necessarily translate to the black "haired" people. When it is considered that they called themselves "black headed" instead of the "black people" the term shies away from an ethnic determination such as "black people" vs "white people" etc. It may have very well described clothing style-the headdress in particular.
@lilyw.719
@lilyw.719 3 жыл бұрын
@@bacoda58 I like that idea, so I can see that. But, I do have a different theory. My immediate first thought was that much of the Middle East was populated from people who came down out of the Caucus mountains and had the blond or red hair and blue eyes that we see in so much of the statuary in the Middle East and farther east. So it would make sense for the Sumerians to differentiate themselves as being a people with black hair. This anthropologist already dismissed that theory, but he seems like the type who ignores evidence he doesn't like.

Sumerian isoglossia might be just a feature of the ancient world of many isolated and virtually unrelated languages that used to obtain worldwide. The same linguistic situation of relatively small populations that evolved in situ in the era directly after the end of the last ice age, before much trade and travel had been established, might have persisted well into the early period of the foundations of Sumerian civilization. The Caucasus is a perfect example of this linguistic diversity. If Sumerian cultural life was robust enough past the era of its origination it could have maintained its distinctiveness like some of its neighbors like Elam. Isolation of language is a feature of the old world before imperial amalgamation occurred in historical times.

A wonderful video. Kudos to both host and guest. Hopefully, soon we will get some substantive DNA data on this subject. Until then, it is still a comparison of cultural artifacts that drive the determination of who these people are and from whence they came. Sumerian myths tell of their people moving into Sumer from the south. There are archeological findings of earthenware in areas of the southern coast of the Saudi peninsula that match closely with pre-historic Sumer. Which way were the people, or culture going? btw my favorite text in this area/time is "A History of the Ancient Near East, ca, 3000-323 BC" 3rd Ed. by Marc Van De Mieroop

In the Philippines distance of 30 mI, the language accent totally different. It's like Bostonian and Deep Southern Accent. 50mI+ It becomes another dialect. My parents were from the Southern Philippines, My Mother's township is bordered by a bridge. two different distinctive dialects spoken on each end of the bridge. So growing up in the Philippines I had to speak both of my parents Dialects, the National language, English and Spanish. And still I don't comprehend my wife's language, I just nod my head and hope for the best. All the nodding of my head and the gestures of agreeing to whatever she's is saying, I am still in the wrong.

This theory makes a ton of sense, think about it. How long does it take a language group to diverge so much that you can't even reconstruct them as coming from the same language family originally? Four thousand years maybe? Ten at most. How long have humans been speaking? We don't quite know obviously but it's almost certainly more than 100 000 years. It makes sense that the pre-historic world was filled with different language groups the same way we see in pre contact North America and other hunter gatherer societies. Sure trade and such existed in the stone age, even quite long distant trade but they were probably using lingua franca or just learning new languages as necessary or even communicating using gestures or what have you. It makes sense that this world was incredibly fractured culturally and linguistically.

I've been thinking recently about Epic of Gilgamesh, and I came to a conclusion that, all those events are actually ancestral memories of grandparents of their grandparents, back in the paleo-neolithic boundary where peoples just started forming groups and identity. Bilga mes meaning the ancestor hero, where they put all of those remembered brave men that cared for and lead its tribe, defended against monsters such as sabertooths and mammoths, how they inspired generations of young men to stand up for their people and lead them to better lands. The epic explains how the elements didn't favor them and how dark inner humanity often had the better of a man than righteousness and morality. The nature of a man can be tracked from its very beginnings which are portraited as monsters, beasts and characters as Humbaba. Enkidu himself could be one of the last remaining Neanderthals or some extinct human species, therefore being hairy and alien, but welcomed, as he is human as any other. Which could interpret the meeting of different species and tribes. Gilgamesh finding the way of immortality may be a metaphor for generations of orally passed stories of great men and warriors that kept the qualities and values of the culture they were building. In a way, Gilgamesh, the great heroes of our ancestors, became immortals in our tradition and culture up until today.

I disagree about his views on linguistic connection of Sumerian language to any modern language. This view drives from IndoEuro-Semitic centeric analysis that have tinted the archeology. Based on this view, anything that is not Indo-European or Semitic is labeled as "Isolate". This gentleman, despite having a Turkic-Mongolian last name, apparently has never heard sound of any Turkic language. Most Sumerian words that we know have either similar meaning or similar sounds in Turkic languages. Let's start with his own example "Gilgamesh" that he claims sounds very alien. Indeed, in Turkic languages this sounds very familiar because Gil or Kil means tiny hair and Gamesh or Kamish means Bamboo/Straw. So at least sound wise it sounds very Turkic (Sari-Kamish in Turkey and Ghamish-li, in Northern Syria and many other places in Turkey, Caucasus, Iran and Centra Asia with variants of Ghamesh or Kamish ). Also the Sumerian words for example for mother (Ama), father (Ada), water (ApSu), God(Dingir), Star (Ul), narrow (Sig) ...... have similar sounds and identical meanings in Turkic languages ( Ana for mother, Ata for father, Su for water, Tengri for God, Ulduz/Yildiz for Star and Sig'in for squeezing into a small and narrow place..... The similarities are endless. Also, Sumerians called their region Kengir we still have this name for some regions, people and a plant in the form of Kangar in Turkic world. Just type in the last name Kangar'Lu (with different suffix variants of Lu, Lou, Loo and Li all meaning from Kangar) see how many will come up. Also, all the carvings and statues of the ancient people of that region (Semitic and Indio-European origin) are bearded but Sumerian ones have no beard and that plus other facial features shows their central Asian origin.

As informative as Razib was, and I look forward to more from him, the interviewer was excellent. So often, interviewers often lack depth and understanding and lack an appropriate approach, which allows for the most information to be shared with the listeners from the interviewed. In short, a good interviewer allows the interviewed to share their story without interruptions, and with informed guidance and questioning. So many thanks to both, but I know not who the interviewer was, and found nothing in the notes to help.

Hey, Im no geneticist, but I know enough to know that all blue eyed people share a common ancestor from the Black Sea region, from thousands and thousands of years ago. Blue eyes appear quite frequently in Sumerian artwork. So you might not have their entire genetic profile on record, but with logic you can deduce that they too share that same common ancestor, and from there it might be easier to figure out where they actually came from.

Was born in Sumerian marshes, south of modern Iraqi, my grandfather’s house was made of reeds as same as Sumerian houses, we have a tree of our background back to 400 years ago and still in the marshes, they had been isolated there, but we speak Arabic with some words aged back to Sumerian people, as archeologists said! I don’t know if have Sumerian roots, but we look like them according to their facial features! According to the history, that Jewish came in, Arabs came in with Islam, so a lot of people converted under threat of sword! Why don't people use their mind and intelligence? They saw the apple fall to the ground for thousands of years, but they could not understand the force of gravity. Every language has words from other languages. This does not affect anyone's ethnicity. The points to be considered are the language structure, grammar and in which other geographies the words are used. The words used in the Sumerian language were used in the Etruscan language. The words used in Scythian, Sumerian and Etruscan languages were also used in Ancient Egyptian, Aztec, Maya, Inca Languages. Thousands of Turkish and Proto-Turkish words continue to be used by Native Americans today. A society must have at least 7 common features in order to determine its nationality. The Sumerian civilization has at least 200 common features with the Central Asian Turks. Etruscans have hundreds of common features with Central Asian Turks. Native Americans and Central Asian Turks have thousands of common features. Proto-Turkish is the oldest language. The word Siberia means paradise in old Turkish. The origin of the word Shiva, which is constantly spoken by the inhabitants of India, is "sibir". This means that Proto-Turkish, the oldest language in the world, and Native American languages, which today belong to the proto-Turkish language group, formed the dialects of the Paradise language. That's why Native American languages are so precious and special. Koran: Surah Hucurat: O people, remember that we created you from a male and a female - from Adam and Eve. Great topic--important and interesting. I can also be interested in "a personal journey about the topic" --the direction your guest took the topic; however, Sumerian ethnicity has been mistaken for years and sometimes on purpose. Some don't want the beginners of civilization to be from Africa. The DNA is important. Yes it is different than culture, language and communication, but that is no reason to exclude or undervalue it.

Well done and nice place to talk over Sumer herein: Sumer was called by Assyrian and Sumerian did themselves as Ungsanggigga what black headed comes from. Then we may deduce Sumer has same meaning as Ungsanggigga, black head. Surprisingly with current Korean we can access them very easily: -Sang in Ungsang can be translated as "head", meaning as leader religiously & politically, and other as "trading people(?)", too. -Ung is used as "bear" in animal or "male, man". Bear in Korean pronounces closely "black". It seems to me Ungsang was just literary translated as black head, but it be more realistically as outstanding head or excellent leader. -Su in sumer we have excellent or outstanding meaning, or Su colloquial means male from Ung literary and "mer", meru is closely pronounced meori(no vowel in English) as head in Korean by simple vowel changes. -So Ungsang by Sumerian as literary style like Latin, what was directly translated black head has the same meaning Sumer, what looks more colloquial style by Assyrian. -Gigga means as ethnic group or family. The writing system as cuneiform by Sumerian, first glyph in east Asia developed Chinese character and scientific Korean alphabet system Hangul looks very well connected, and more Sumerian diaspora around BCE19C who were religious and of trading people at Canaan or Ugarit might stimulate Alphabet development. Please come in Korean and I am sure you will find much more about Sumerian!

Fantastic insights as always, Razib. Still remember interacting with you for all the Harappa Ancestry Project stuff in the late 00s. Something elementary, but I believe the Sumerian word for city is Ur, and the Dravidian word for city is also Ooru. While perhaps not directly related, perhaps Sumer >> Elam >> Dravidian-speaking South Asia (Pre-IE) was a continuum. We have a language known as Brahui in Balochistan, also an isolate Dravidian language surrounded by Indo-Aryan and Iranian languages that might be a relic of a time when Dravidian languages were the dominant tongue at the time. Brahui, or at least the Dravidian parts of the modern tongue are pretty similar to ancient Tamil. The languages of Sumer, Elam and Dravidian languages are all agglutinative, too. The dominant West-Eurasian autosomal DNA cluster of South Asia is also West Asian, that adds credence to the theory of Neolithic Middle Eastern farmers speaking Dravidian languages coming to South Asia and mixing with its paleolithic/ASI inhabitants.
@rohith4966
@rohith4966 2 жыл бұрын
There is definitely something to be noted here. My theory is that proto-Dravidian/Meluhhan/or whatever you want to call it was one of the many languages existing on the lower Iranian plateau. This would explain the sprachbund effect between these ancient languages. Like you said, these neolithic HG groups pushed eastwards into the Indus Basin where they would form the IVC along with the native Indian HG (AASI). Now looking at Dravidian genetics, especially at the non-brahmin peasant castes, there is elevated Iran N, higher than AASI many times. Strong YDNA lineages like J2 and L-M20 speak some truth to a southwards migration after the IVC collapse. I'm Telugu and am around 49% Iran N, calculated using my G25 coords. But the Ur- toponym angle is definitely a theory that should be explored more.

My thesis is that early Sumerian spoke Tamil fluently and wrote in Tamil. This doesn't look into racial issues, but takes the Sumerian literature as internal evidences. We get third party external validation of Western scholars Sumerian literature recovering as fair in the present form of Tamil. There also appears to be cultural continuity in terms of temple based villages among business communities and Indian priests who are thought to entered India from North Western routes. See my works through Google scholar and Academia. I only recommend to revisit the early notion that Sumerian language was long dead, but investigate and evaluate.. Dr. Purushothaman, P.

Both languages (Kurdish & Sumerian) are ergatives. In middle East today, there are four dominant languages: Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Kurdish. The only language in middle East which is ergative is Kurdish and of course „is/was“ Sumerian. antic linguist & historian already proved hundreds of incredible identical words as well as sentence structure (grammer) between sumerian & kurdsih (sorani) mainly spoken in Iraq. english: my mother is my life sumerian: ama mu zi mu (𒂼 𒈬 𒍣 𒈬) kurdish: ãma m ži/žīn m a english: my mother is shepherdess sumerian: ama mu šuba kurdish: ãma m šuãn a english: the man/young man is doing a fart ;) sumerian: lu dur aka kurdish: lãu tir akã and here u can listen how kurdish (sorani) sounds like! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gtKJn5BzvMnSZXk.htmlsi=HRDlPCBJMgFZD3Qf linguists are working on that & Benno Langsberger, sumerologe wrote, that sumerian & hurrian are very similar & one of them could be the „ancestor“ the hurrians from Zagros Mountains, are the ancestors of the gutians, mittanis, medes etc & kurds are the decendes of the medes & so one of the hurrians/sumerians😏

@@Coden11 yes, that's my thought, though it's anyone's guess. However "head carry" refers to any human people (we carry our heads up). It's just the "black" that I'm skeptical about. Sumerian is an aglutative language: each letter or phenome has a vague meaning stacked together like Legos. "black" is anything dark like night. It could be referring to heads (like hair or skin color) but also what they did with those heads (like star gaze). Imagine how you'd express "awake" using only images or nouns (to express verbs and adjectives). Awake, alert, watching is "heads up" then and today. Wise dark heads up = astronomers.

While it can be understood as a single word, sentences were Subj-Obj-Verb. In English (SVO) we might understand: Wise night carry heads or "servants of heaven". And indeed, that's how we believe they understood their relationship with the gods. We still have traces of Sumar (which in Akkadian refers to red). Fx, SAGittarius comes from Pa.Bil.SAG, where SAG means "head" in all meanings, including leader, in front, top. We still use arrows today to convey direction or point to detail (which probably derives from many ancient cultures).

@Garamante civilization SAG=head is the quarter we can be most certain of. I have not defended "hair" nor "skin", although they are reasonable assumptions. "Civilized people" is also a popular but unsubstantiated assumption, but none the less, "people" is clearly referred. While I assume the "dark" refers to the night sky, most scholars seem to think it refers to the soil (Earth from which man was created). You're welcome to believe what you want, but your certainty is unjustified.

What I would be interested in is the Indus Valley Civilization of India and Pakistan which predates both Egypt and Mesopotamia. It is believed to be 8,000 years old. The Indus Script based on excavations at Harappa can be dated back to 2600-1900 BC. However, it should be remembered that archeologists started digging in Mesopotamia at Ur in the mid-19th century whereas the dig at Harappa, the first Indus Valley city found was excavated in 1921 followed by Mohenjo-daro in 1931. Just because the work was done in Sumer long before Harappa was discovered, does not make the Sumerian civilization older. As well Harappan seals were found in Mesopotamia, so it is thought that Indus Valley was older than Sumer.

The Sumerians started civilization 450.000 years ago and is the start of everything. Then there was the first flood that wiped everything away and they started over.. some areas in the world where not affected like North America, Europe and Russia. There was a second flood circa 1700 that’s why everything archeological found is under 10 to 30 meters deep. And the Middle Ages is a 1000 years hoax.. didn’t exist !!

Maybe the "Black Heads" were refugees who were fleeing repercussions caused by the downfall of the Indus Valley Civilization. Apparently that happened at the end of the Ice Age when unbelievable amounts of meltwater caused sea levels to quickly rise and flood significant portions of the Indus Valley. The "Black Heads" obviously settled into and around the marshes of Ubaid\Sumer, which happen to be similar to the Indus Valley's lowlands. And they may have brought with them from the Indus Valley relatively advanced agricultural technologies such as a management structure\social system\culture that was uniquely capable of governing vast irrigation systems. Supposedly the Indus Valley civilization collapsed when management of its complex irrigation system became dysfunctional, which probably happened when the seat of government likely being near the lowlands didn't adapt quickly enough to people being displaced by the flooding sea. Advanced agricultural methods would have given refugees from the Indus Valley enough advantage to establish a permanent settlement in Ubaid\Sumer. That may have been the only safe location within migration distance of the Indus Valley for that kind of technology to implemented again. There seem to be too many coincidences to dismiss for how the "Black Heads" of Ubaid\Sumer could have refugees from the disintegrating Indus Valley civilization.

Interesting. Q: why would Out of Africa take place? What would waves of people, as if orchestrated, set off to distant lands, not walking over each other, having family, old & young, travel thousands of miles into unknown, dangerous lands with seemingly no reason other than to enjoy a good long hike? The weather was unknown. Predators were unknown. Vegetation & diet totally different. Tribes of say 100 would set off. How many would make it through uncharted territories free of disease & medicines? We're missing an important chunk of the puzzle

Honest question, why does the beginnings of "civilization" always seem to stem from and or have to do with crops? What about different peoples from around the world who lived in climates/places where there was a natural abundance of food where there was need for planting anything? I mean if from a society of peoples who didnt need to plant anything and food just grew, would those peoples not be "civilized"?? Or am I misinterpreting something? Thanks

If people settle somewhere and are able to grow many crops successfully. they will have more time to do other things like think out problems, create a city, and have time to work out problems. The Sumerians got away from a flood. They came from somewhere else. My guess is near the Black Sea. This area was flooded by a huge melt from the coldest places on earth. Cynthia Allen McLaglen

Agriculture brings a more specialized and complex society - you need specialists to tell everyone when to plant, where to plant, what to plant, and what to do with the food they grow when they've harvested it. Where there was no need for agriculture, there was no need for a more specialized and complex society, so one didn't develop. People just went on living the way they always had. Alternately, the development of a specialized and complex society brought the need for agriculture. You can't have priests, bureaucrats, and merchants if the people who would be priests, bureaucrats, and merchants spend all their time looking for food - you only get priests, bureaucrats, and merchants if other people are feeding them, and the only way to create that much of a food surplus is agriculture. So the two - agriculture and specialized, complex society - develop in tandem because each creates the need for the other.

23,000 years ago there were farmers living beside the Sea of Galilee at the archeological site of Ohalo II. They harvested grain, ground grain into flour, they caught fish, waterfowl, and gazelles. Their culture was probably very similar to the African Pygmies of the Congo, who catch animals and fish with nets. This would have led to the domestication of livestock. At the same time, mammoth hunters were living in Siberia. They inherited genes, culture, and behavior from Eurasian Neanderthals who tended to be violent and cannibalistic. When the mammoth became extinct in Eurasia, the descendants of the mammoth hunters, Ancient Northern Eurasians began to invade farming societies. The farmers who fled from violence became shepherds and fishers. The violent invaders became warriors, gods, pagans, and slave owners. 7,000 years ago, people of Herxheim Germany were practicing ritual human sacrifice and cannibalism. This culture migrated out of Northwestern Europe into the Mediterranean. During the Bronze Age Collapse, when the Sea People and the Israelites campaigned against the Canaanites, this culture of dolmen construction, the symbol of the swastika (the “Mark of Cain”), paganism, human sacrifice, slavery, colonization, and warfare spread from Mesopotamia to Southern Asia, East Asia, Polynesian, and Mesoamerica. The Mesoamericans of Paracas Peru, those with the elongated skulls, migrated from the Persian Gulf during the Bronze Age Collapse. They have been found to carry maternal haplogroup U2e of Early European Farmers, the cannibals of Herxheim Germany, plus other haplogroups of Europe and Western Asia. Haplogroup U evolved in the Ancient Northern Eurasians of Sunghir Russia, with mammoth hunters that inherited genes, violence, and cannibalism from Neanderthals. Haplogroup U has been found to create a higher probability of psychosis. This psychosis led to World War II and the Holocaust. It led to the violence of Canaanite pagans, Iranian farmers, warfare in East Asia, and paganism, human sacrifice, slavery, and warfare in ancient Mesoamerica. Today, we’re still dealing with the effects of inherited traits of violence, with violent Russians, Iranians, Palestinians, people who have inherited genes of violence that lead to colonization, warefare, slavery, and human sacrifice wherever ancient pagans who used the symbol of the swastika (the “Mark of Cain”) migrated during antiquity. When you have a group of people who worship death, who survive by killing and taking, who have an obsession with lethal weapons and the color of fresh blood, people who are constantly unsatisfied with what they have and where they are, that leads to bigger problems than simply having enough to eat.

We all have the potential to see ourselves everywhere and in all time, because we are the ALL, i.e. I AM. Everything changes over time with each new discovery, as we dig deeper and deeper (with much more remaining hidden/undiscovered). What is the oldest or original is subject to change with each new discovery and based on its connection to a myriad cultures, peoples, regions, and religions. Ultimately, we are all connected. We are one, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The issue with Science, Archaeology and Anthropology are they create a narrative to justify their field of study instead of having an open mind to change the historic story of us.

I think David Reich addressed this question in "Who we are...". Basically, ancient population from today's Iran migrated both east to India, where they replaced hunter-gatherers and became ancestors of today's Tamils; also west, where they settled and became Sumerians. That's the reason for vague similarity between Tamil languages and Sumerian.

Iranian farmers actually couldn't totally replace indigenous ancient indians but mixed with them. Mixture of iranian farmers and ancient indian hunter gatherers formed the dravidians. Ancestors of Tamils somehow less mixed with iranian farmers. (Of course they mix to some extent) They still carry siginificant amount of hunter gatherer ancestry. At the onset of bronze age, indo european speaker groups came to india and mixed with dravidians to create modern indians. Since indo europeans came from the north, southernernmost indian groups carry slightly less amount of IE ancestry. It is said that original hunter gatherers of the indian subcontinent looked somehow between aus. aboriginals and andaman islanders in appereance.
