Francesco is always such an awesome teacher :) great stuff. combines the priit's stuff with wim's and some additional detail about sweep angles! LOVE IT!

Thank you :) Yes what I do is trying to make sense of the combined material of Wim, Priit and Octavio Couto. Then I try to make everything as simple and explanable as possible. It's a hard job but someone has to do it!

Great point at the end. So you basically position your opponent to have all his weight on the centerline of one body part (in most cases a knee or foot). Apply constant pressure. Then as soon as he shifts his weight in any direction you can tip him because his knee or foot is still pinned and his head is out of alignment. Always have your hips come up first. If he can do something to keep his posture in the direction of the sweep, he’s safe in that direction.

Very good and concise! Thank you. Last sentence I would say tough, "if he can keep looking and orienting his posture in the direction where he's losing balance, he can be safe." The looking part is really important and I wouldn't omitt it.

That was an excellent seminar! Sweeps have always been a focal point of my guard game. I am very strong at setting up, adjusting and finishing some of them and others I just have moderate success based on opponents' experience. I just thought some of that had to do with some sweeps being inferior to others or being more suited to different body types but this puts things into clarity for me. I simply apply these principles better for some sweeps and less so for others! Thank you very much for sharing this knowledge!

The scissor sweep, i learned the same thing from henry akins, but minus the head control detail. Did you “invent” that detail by yourself from failures to sweep when the opponent is sitting straight up? Thank you Francesco!

A foundamental concept for sweeps is: put weight on the head, roll him over a shoulder. In no gi translate most of the times into that clinch you see in the video, with the gi you can hang to the collar. All this for saying yes I think so? :D

At 25:00 you talk about facing the way you are being swept. In another seminar (this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9F5ochhx53Nd2w.html) Priit uses baby bridge while facing away from the direction of the sweep to 'reduce the damage' from getting swept. How would you combine these two postures?
@francescofonte76
@francescofonte76 Жыл бұрын
Hi Leon, good point :) Priit is deeply concerned with "very late stage" of things. You can look at it like this: what you see in this video comes before what you see in Priit's video. Facing the direction you are being swept is the protection, should that fail (regardless of the reason) it also means you are now facing away from the direction of the sweep, and what you see in that class from Priit, comes into play. Early protection and late defence. Sounds good?
