Bunny talks about the benefits of late summer pruning, particularly for espaliers and contained fruit trees, to encourage strong fruit buds instead of vigorous leaf growth the following spring.
This film, which includes a Question & Answer session, was recorded for The Telegraph Live and is one of a series of 3.

I got an iMow because of you and now, I absolutely have to have that pruning saw!! I am in love with it! There are some trees here in North America that we cannot prune branches in spring like Birch and Yellowwood as they will bleed for weeks after a branch is removed. Pruning is done in summer after leaf is out, root pruning on these trees has to be done in early April. I prune the roots for transplant pretty much the same as you only in thirds the first go around and the second go around is when we get it out of the ground and moved on site. I really do enjoy your videos. thanks!

Yes quite a few trees will bleed if pruned in spring, hornbeam is one. But a professional pruner told me that if trees bleed a bit it is not so bad, it removes fungal spores away from the wound and as long as it’s not excessive does not do harm. Glad you like the Imow, it just frees you up to do more creative types of gardening! 🐇

Love your videos, always informative and helpful. You just mentioned root pruning container trees. I have a five foot standard ligustrum that has just shown me some roots visible from the top. It has been in a VERY large container for about five years. Would you show a video of the root pruning you are talking about, please.

Many thanks for your comments. If I were you I would lift it out of the pot, it might be easier if you can turn it on its side. Then I would examine the root ball and see if they are starting to go round in circles, if so I would carefully reduce these by about a tenth to stop the spiralling. Obviously water well after and add new compost around sides if room. Box in containers appreciates root pruning every few years. I find the best way is just to remove the base from the pot and position it on soil. Then you can leave it to look after it’s self. See my baseless pots videos! 🐇

Thank you…I summer pruned my espalier apples, that divide my veg garden from the courtyard, in July as advised on TV! But this may be a bit early, as I have more vegetative growth & I was wondering what to do…. I have confidence now to cut these back too, even though a little late? Also I cut back in July to 4 or 5 leaves, and prune harder back in winter. It seems that you do it all in one session (ie.back to basal leaf cluster in August/September)

Love the videos, but need some help. Last summer I stupidly cut the leader on my apple espalier I have been growing from a whip. I wasn't concentrating! It hasn't sorted itself out and no new leader has emerged a year later. How can I rectify this? Do I need to chop it back down a row. There aren't any buds visible where the leader would normally continue. Thank you to anyone with a suggestion.

I have an enormously overgrown and unruly old apple tree on the edge of my property that bears only small misshapen fruit, ( It is the last survivor of a commercial orchard, so probably a good variety. We've been forced to cut away a lot of the tree due to storm damage, dead branches etc. I've done most of this pruning in the winter. If I prune now (late August), can I hope to reshape, reinvigorate the tree and possibly encourage it to bear good fruit again. One big go, or spread the pruning over several years?
@pansepot1490

Usually pruning for forming the shape is done in the winter, summer pruning its mostly for reducing excessive foliage and give air and light to the fruits. I think you can cut the tree back to shape in one go (deciduous trees tolerate hard pruning pretty well) but you might lose fruits for a year or more. Apple trees produce flowers (and apples) on buds that grow in clusters on branches that are at least two or three years old. Difficult to explain without showing. If I were you I would ask advice from someone knowledgeable or just search KZfaq for videos about pruning Apple trees. Nowadays one can find videos that teach you anything and even things that look complicated become very simple when you can see someone showing you how to do it. Just remembered that commercial growers use products to thin out the fruits so they get bigger. Probably the misshape is caused by disease. Don’t mean to discourage you but fruit trees like apple trees are prone to a long list of diseases and parasites, with some varieties more susceptible than others. Difficult to get a good crop without taking care of them adequately. I have tried myself. Anyway best of luck!

I imagine you got a lot of water shoots in the growing season after the heavy winter prune? It’s good to rub these out or remove them. I would try and balance the shape back up by working on it over two winters with additional pruning in summer if necessary while continuing to remove most of the water shoots as soon as you can in the growing season. 🐇

can you plant other plants under citrus trees?
@bunnyguinness
@bunnyguinness 2 жыл бұрын
I have done, but only when they are in pots and they were fine. I think shallow rooting plants that don’t need much moisture such as lavender will work. But do wait till the citrus have established usually around 3 years, as they don’t appreciate other plants competing with them for moisture.🐇

How do you find plants thrown out by nurseries? Do you have people who contact you? Or is it hit or miss whenever you visit a nursery? Do you ask or just look in their rubbish?
