The moment Tom explained the change in the Best Reprint category, I knew in my heart it was because my beloved Thunder Road would be up for game of the year on so many people's lists. Glad that rule was adjusted!

Thunder road vendetta is just too much fun. Sure there are more thinky and mechanical games but the simplicity and ridiculousness of thunder road make it top tier.

Love seeing "Age of Comics" in the Best Theme grouping, but wished they were also in the Best New Designer category.

Knarr is a great game that just about anyone can play. However, there are a few avenues of play that feel rewarding. Already played this game 65 times between online and in person. No imperium horizons for best solo games is rough.

I'm a big fan of the Dice Tower theme variations, but can I suggest next year using something a bit less intrusive and bombastic for the nominations music bed? Hearing it so many times it got irritating very quickly.

Kind of surprised me that I actually have 4 of the 10 top game nominees, as I don’t really have the time or $ to collect/play tons of games. My order is 1. Distilled 2. Darwin’s Journey (very close 2nd) 3. Earth (kind of underwhelming relative to the overall hype) 4. Ticket to Ride / LOTW (haven’t actually played but know TTR very well, so a guess)

I would love to see it win best small publisher, but it has tough competition. I think it should have been in the best game category too. It's a great game. Fingers crossed that it wins.

Great picks! However I think that Hegemony should have been nominated in best theme, Voidfall should have been nominated in best strategy game, Age of Innovation should have been nominated in best reprint, Expeditions should have been nominated in best art, Scarface 1920 should have been nominated in best production value, and Evacuation should have been nominated in best innovative game.

I disagree with almost all of your statements. I like "Evacuation" but it isn't really innovative. I strongly dislike the theme of Hegemony. I dislike Voidfall. Wasn't Scarface years ago? Did it have production value??

Im with you on this, I feel the Dice Tower's avoid games like voidfall. But I am shocked the "panel" they have avoided it as well, since Voidfall is always on the hotness of BGG, its incredible ratings and multple nominations from the golden geek awards.

At least the best game of the year, Lunar Rush, was nominated for best small publisher game. Stationfall should have been at least in innovative and it feels weird to see Vangelis Bagiartakis in new designer. Hegemony is deserving but new designer? Vangelis has been involved in a bunch of really good games before (Among the Stars series, Pursuit of Happiness, etc.).

No Voidfall anywhere? You should give this game a fair chance! It’s more intimidating than it actually is and it is amazing. Hegemony as a game is a much harder game to learn and teach in my opinion.

There were a lot of games not on the list. But they had to make enough room to get Distilled into every category. Sacrifices had to be made. 😅

“Family Games” sounds like it’s made to play with kids. The term “Welcoming Games” is used because it is what we in the board game hobby might suggest to play with family/friends who are not aware of these types of games. It is how we might introduce people into the world of tabletop gaming.

We enjoyed Forest Shuffle but the game is flat out broken / solved (one DOMINANT strategy). And the designer isn’t fixing it with the new expansion.

The biggest shock for me was how time after time Hegemony (the highest rated game of 2023 on BGG) did not get nominated. One nomination. I'm speechless. Not that my opinion matters more than any other single person, but Hegemony was my most memorable gaming experience of the year. I was shocked at how good this game was. Meanwhile Sky Team was one of my most forgettable. It was fine, just fine, but I would probably have to be talked into trying it again.

It's their list; their awards. They only include what they like which makes sense. A lot of great games got missed, but there were so many in 2023 coming out they probably couldn't play enough of them as a group to consider them all.

Crazy that Dune Imperium Uprising was not in any category. Should've been in theme, strategy, and game of the year at least. Not saying it would win all those but not showing up in any is wild.

So… Distilled is best game from a new publisher, right? It is the only game of that category that is also in the best game category. And Sky Team the best 2 player for the same reason, etc… that is the problem with so many categories, you end up cornering yourself or with inconsistencies. In any case nice selection of games

You don't have to be that strict. The different category mainly give opportunity to award many different games.

@@sarumon17 I see what you're saying but these are board game reviewers. Accessibility would be a major factor in a people's choice award, but a panel of board game reviewers would presumably have a far greater knowledge, especially of games popular enough to enter the BGG too 100 in their year of release, and I disagree that accessibility should be a factor, other than in a category like "best welcoming game".

@@modemacabre @sarumon17 has the right of it. There are plenty of reviewers that focus on short / family games that do not have time to play a beast like Hegemony, or wouldn't want to. There are a few, I'm sure, but when the award is voted on by "most" board game reviewers, the few aren't going to change the tide. In the past, I really haven't seen very many games that heavy on the DT awards - probably not too surprising to see the same thing here.

And I have no doubt that there are war games, miniature games, and train games that people out there think should be a game of the year. I would expect Hegemony to be something that Edward and friends over at Heavy Cardboard would be considering much more strongly. The Dice Tower is much more of the masses. Nothing wrong with either take.

I get that there are plenty of games out there and everyone has an opinion (Stationfall is easily my game of the year) but Hegemony got robbed. The hobby mainstream has been so meh for the past few years.
