A journey through space and time a scientific quest in the footsteps of conquerors. Until late 17th Century, mountains were merely seen as geographical obstacles, infertile land, useless and mostly scary. Scientists were the first ones bitten by the desire to explore them. One of their first objectives were preventing avalanches, and making most remote areas accessible. Since then, engineers have been working on the design of safe and most adapted equipment from textile to means of transportation. We learn from their achievements as well as the what it takes for the bravest climbers who have reached the highest peaks in the world.

Two very good friends of mine, Rob Hall and Gary Ball, from here in Christchurch New Zealand, summited the 7 highest peaks on the 7 continents in 7 months in 1990. My company sponsored them, providing the solar panels they used to charge up their electronic equipment. As far as I'm aware, their record has never been broken. Mont Blanc is not the highest mountain in Europe - the highest is Mount Elbrus in the Urals in European Russia. The last of the 7 summits that Rob and Gary climbed was the Vinson Massif in a VERY remote part of Antarctica - Rob brought me back a piece of rock that I keep on my bookshelf from the summit of the Vinson Massif. Unfortunately, these two very good friends of mine both died in the Himalayas, Gary on K2, and Rob on Mount Everest. RIP my friends.

Thank you Hol Lee. Our company also provided the VHF to Inmarsat back-to-back radio link, which allowed Rob, Gary, and Peter Hillary (Sir Edmund Hillary's son) to speak to the Radio New Zealand studio back here, using the VHF link to a handheld carried with them to the summit of Everest. It was a two-way link, from the summit down to the back-to-back link at Base Camp, up to the Inmarsat satellites, and on to the phone system in New Zealand. Rob, Gary and Peter were only the 2nd, 3rd and 4th New Zealanders to summit Everest, the first of course being Sir Edmund in 1953. Sir Edmund was actually in the Radio NZ studio, and the whole conversation was on National Radio!! This was all in 1990 - New Zealand's 150th year! Having conquered Everest first, Rob and Gary went on the Seven Summits expedition to climb the highest mountain on each continent - I have a beautiful signed poster to commemorate their achievement, as well as the rock from the Vinson Massif!! They left the original solar panels with the Sherpas in Nepal, and they reckon they changed their lives!! A strange thing about the Seven Summits expedition was that the ONLY time they got snowed on was on Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, which is only 2228 metres above sea level!! You can ride a BICYCLE to about a kilometre from the summit!! So every time they had another expedition, we donated another lot of panels, in conjunction with our friends at Siemens Solar. As the local Sales Engineer/Manager here in Christchurch, it was up to me to arrange the whole deal (it was free!!), and I'm proud of the fact that it all worked perfectly, without the slightest problem!!

they keep talking about how tibetains and sherpas are "genetically adapted" to high altitide, which, sure, could be true. But sherpas are born at high altitude, a lot of sherpa kids work as porters from like 13-14 years old, so of course their bodies would be used to high altitude.

The British mountaineering traditions are intimately coupled to the Imperialist expansionist and elitist policies of the British Empire. If you look at the deaths recorded on Mount Everest in the 1920s, the first 9 fatalities listed were Sherpas associated with British expeditions. It was not until the deaths of Mallory and Irving in 1924 that the first British/western fatalities occurred. For a long time The British viewed Mount Everest as British property.
