This is beautiful! I love how you’re learning ASL for your DCP. The last time i was in Disney i was waiting for the parade and i saw this cast member and i was just people watching to make time go by and i saw this guy come up and he was dressed for the Halloween party and this girl signs to him that she loved his costume and the joy it brought to his face was honestly so touching. I grew up with 40db hearing loss bilaterally. for my graduation from college, my mom took me on a trip to disney. we spent the week with the interpreters and it was AMAZING! I had surgery a few years ago which greatly reduced my hearing loss and it became a dream of mine to become a licensed interpreter and become an interpreter at Disney. the coolest thing was one morning at Hollywood Studios when it was super rainy. my mom and i were hanging out at Animations and my two favorite characters (besides Tinkerbell but she's different) Donald and Daisy came in. They started signing with me and it was SO COOL! we took silly pictures together and everything. i wish my mom had thought to videotape the interaction but it was an experience i'll never forget. literally had 20 minutes of one on one time with the characters while we waited for the interpreters to arrive for the show. :D AMAZING VIDEO!!!!!!!!

not right now unfortunately. i'm in a tiny town in west texas with no interpreting program. looking into online courses with Gallaudet but for the time being, just trying to keep my ASL from getting rusty by interpreting as much as possible for the Deaf population at work. if i hadn't come to this tiny town though, i would never have had my surgery because we'd been pushing for a face mri for years and all the doctors back home said it was nuts. the doctor here took one look at the mri and said that he didn't know if the surgery would help my hearing but it needed to be done. when i woke up from surgery, the first thing i said was that he talked funny (texas accent, lol). he laughed and said, i guess it worked. my brother actually just had the same surgery last week. hoping his worked as well (it should have considering his hearing loss was only about half of mine).

Carol ASL what’s the difference between ASL and PSE?
@brettenoll56756 жыл бұрын
Hi! PSE stands for "pidgin signed english" and is a combination of ASL vocabulary and english grammar. While ASL has its own grammatical structure like SOV (Subject-object-verb, ex BOY BALL THROW = the boy threw the ball), PSE follows english word order . If I said anything incorrect please let me know!
@sbpcc2226 жыл бұрын
ASL is also concepts not words. Like when she's signing "I don't care" she's signing the physical activity of taking care of something, that's how you sign things like "I raised a rabbit" or "I take care of children/ I babysit"

THIS IS THEIR LANGUAGE AND THEY DO NOT LIKE IT WHEN SOMEONE LABELS THE THINGS AS ASL BECAUSE THEY ARE BUTCHERING THEIR LANGUAGE IN A WORLD THEY ALREADY HAVE TROUBLE COMMUNICATING IN. AND YES, I SHOULD DISH OUT MY OPINION, BECAUSE I KNOW FIRST HAND HOW THE DEAF COMMUNITY FEELS ABOUT THIS VERY THING, ALONG WITH INTERPRETERS. SHE HAS NOT HAD ANY FORMAL TRAINING, AS IT IS EASY TO SPOT AND AS AN INTERPRETER , POART OF MY OATH IS TO PROTECT THE LANGUAGE AT ALL COSTS. SO YOU NEED TO STEP BACK BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. FURTHERMORE, SHE WAS MOUTHING THE LYRICS, WHICH IS... NUMBER 1 -- CONSIDERED IMPROPER NUMBER 2 --- SHE IS MOUTHING ENGLISH LYRICS NUMBER 3 --- THE OUTFIT THAT SHE WORE IS INCREDIBLY DISTRACTING. NUMBER 4 --- AND IF SHE HAD ANY FORMAL TRAINING SHE WOULD KNOW ALL OF. THIS WAS "GREAT" PLEASE. SHE BUTCHERED THEIR LANGUAGE AND CALLED IT ASL. VERY OFFENSIVE.

@sashakachru52685 жыл бұрын
Åmëťhÿśt Łòvēr ฅ'ω'ฅ when you sign asl the order you say things is very different. Like the way you form sentences is different. It’s kind of like if someone was speaking English but they said, “Park I’m going to” instead of “I’m going to the park.” That’s why she is saying it’s “English based” because the way she is forming her sentences is based off the exact wording of the sound.
@freyja94685 жыл бұрын
@Alekzandra Stewart ASL is it's own distinct language which has preserved through QUITE a lot of oppression and forced influence from spoken language, but it is *not* just English in a visual form. Facial expressions are half of the grammar, ASL matches *concepts* instead of words, and there is a HEAVY use of what are called classifiers (which show the relation of one word to another, and are used because of the visual, non-linear nature of sign.) In this video, for example, she says I DARK (close eyes) TO SEE, where TO here is used for direction in SEE (signed exact English). In ASL, this sentence could be interpreted a number of ways. One of my favourite conceptual matches is along the lines of CLOSE-EYES (move up to forehead) OPEN-MIND UNDERSTAND. That's an example of more conceptual signing. Another example would be... ,,Through where no-one has been before." Here, it's referencing experience. Something nobody has experienced before. Or... ,,I think of what the world could be." She signs BE, which doesn't really exist in ASL (to be verbs are not used in ASL, only in SEE or for verbatim English translation). One way to interpret that line is THINK WORLD TRANSITION DREAM dream-SAME-world... Meaning, thinking of how the real would could become like that which the singer dreams of. ,,A million dreams are keeping me awake-" DREAM++ THINK OBSESS CL:CC(awake-all-night). They're not keeping (preserving) someone awake, so... That! Plus... A world we can design. DESIGN as signed in this video is more to design on paper or such. MAKE-UP/IMAGINE would probably fit better, as the world being designed is really being thought up (dreamt about) rather than being drawn up. Are you getting (conceptually: understanding) that? ASL is a rich, beautiful language independent of English. If you're curious to see a more conceptually accurate (and more ASL) interpretation of A Million Dreams, you should check out some other interpretations. One I like is from MB Interpreting here on KZfaq. You'll see a huge difference.

@vannalaws16924 жыл бұрын
@@freyja9468 I came looking for just this comment, so thanks. It really isn't ASL, and it's conceptually confusing just because the signs she's using to match the words don't work that way. These are idioms that need to be represented in a physical, visual way, not directly translated. What she's doing is like translating "running nose" to literally a nose running. And especially thank you for a recommendation of a true ASL translation!

Not bad, pretty rough. Some pointers though, the sign you used for “be” and “ our minds” it looks a lot like the signs for “bitch” and “Mexico”. Very English word order not even PSE in my opinion. I don’t mean to be offensive but why is it that people who are LEARNING ASL are constantly being told ‘good attempt’ or ‘That’s proper English’? Can we stop telling folks they’re wrong because technically its not. Just because it’s too English-y. I’m gonna try to be as gentle in saying this only because I am strongly agitated by this. I am a non-Spanish speaking American but I took Spanish in school. I retained the largely relevant phrases and utilize them for work. I’m a CNA. Now I just know the generalized phases taught in a Spanish book that uses the proper formation of the language not casual and of course my clients get a kick out of it and correct me to a more casual way of saying it. But with ASL I see such negative comments about the people sharing their interpretations of ASL they learned ( again they probably have been taught the formal way not casual. Which is TOO ENGLISHY). Though people may say keep trying you can’t say ‘good attempt but keep trying’ and not make someone feel less discouraged. That’s like telling someone you’re not ugly but you’re almost pretty. I started learning asl from a person who was fluent with it because they had a deaf child. It’s a hard time to remember all the signs and stuff. So I was quite impressed with the video.
