Thank you. Finally, a perfect explanation and diagram of the setup I have 1 for 1 (aside from the alarm on the wall). Might add a few extra batteries in case the power goes out for a long time.

Great Comments Steve! I have a spare with 24' of hose I mostly use for odd jobs, after you have been flooded its a real problem. Also many insurance companies want the second backup pump or a standby generator. Cheers

I recommend to all my home inspection clients to but a backup pump in AND ensure it has a the sump has a sealed lid on it for safety. There have been cases when small children have fallen into the sump.

What do you recommend as a system to take water away from the outside end of sump pump to avoid ice,snow plugging or other issues at end of drain line?

Hi, I have a sump pump at the bottom of my garden because it was always flooding. I buried a plastic bin covered with weed control fabric with lots of holes in the bin to allow water in and a pipe running from the bottom of the bin to my drain that connects to the town wastewater system. it has been working for over 5 years now and only requires occasional checks. because it is only sorting out the bottom of my garden I don't have any backup pump, just tall wellies, and a bucket if it goes wrong.

I had the misfortune of my main pump failing and then my battery backup battery only lasting about 2 hours of pumping. You REALLY REALLY need to keep a main pump spare on the shelf and grab a generator for those power outages . In fact i also keep a submersible pool pump on hand for manually clearing the pit into the laundry tub if the main sump discharge line is broken or frozen. You need to think about every single shitty situation, because it's not if, it's when it will happen to you

I just swapped out my backup pump. Without it, my basement would have flooded in a matter of hours as we had a planned power outage that lasted 6 hours!
