Too much sun or placement in the heat in hot sunlight can roast the leaves and eventually wipe out a healthy hydrangea. This video will walk through a damaged bush with some ideas and tips about placement and fixing a sun-scorched or wilted hydrangea. Placement in light sun or shade can be key to a healthy plant, however, too little sun may hinder the flower growth. Healthy hydrangea should provide deep, green leaves and vibrant flowers.

Not many hydrangeas handle the afternoon heat. I have learned now haha. This video was very informative and talked me off the edge from what I was gonna do next. I’m in northwest bc and we are experiencing 32 degrees Celsius weather and the leaves are browning a bit. I could move it to the east facing wall of my house this fall but I’m going to water it more regularly until the heat goes away which it will up here. Thanks for the tips. This vid is the best advice I have seen online so far!

Wow, thanks for the encouragement. I admit that I don't know how different varieties will handle heat and the sun, but for most of the ones that I have seen and had, this is the case. I have a new one this year that seems to be taking it harder than most of my others, but I suspect some of this is the age, size, and watering needs. Great advice on positioning and treating my poor hydrangea. My first time growing it so your advice is very welcome. I had it in the opposite to what you said, morning shade and afternoon sun. I'll let you know how it gets on after I move it. We live in Ireland and like you, we don't get great summers. Anyway, thank you. Happy gardening.

Thanks for the feedback and sharing. I have been learning and continuing to watch my various hydrangea. Most are just now flowering for the first time this spring/summer, and because I have not hit the heat of summer, all are doing well. I have one that will struggle in the weeks ahead when heat waves start, because it gets afternoon sun. Even at the plant store in my area, the hydrangea are written up and signed with the caution about afternoon sun.

Yes, and once this heat wave passes, your hydrangea will recover. I was on vacation until last night, and upon returning, one of mine is getting hit pretty hard, and a few others are struggling, too.

Good tips, my favorite flowers are hydrangeas, and they do get burned. Now I put up umbrellas it works! 🥰🪴🌺

I will often cut off the unsightly parts, and sometimes this is as simple as cutting part of the leaf that is brown, and leaving the green part that is still OK. For more severe parts, new growth will start at a bud.

Sun and hot heat could be the main part of the problem, and also issues with watering/mulch.

What type of hydrangea were these? I'm in KY and have a pinkiy winkie that is out in direct sun all day long and it's doing great. This is the second season it has been in the ground and the first time it has flowers. These plants can sometimes make a person pull out their hair. I have a variety of them - all except the PW are in containers. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for sharing and you are right that different varieties will respond differently to the sun and heat conditions. I am not sure my varieties, but the few that I have do struggle with the large amounts of sun and heat in the summer, so I try to limit that exposure. Thanks for sharing!

One thing to consider is something like too much fertilizer or some sort of soil issue. Like grass, too much fertilizer when the sun is out can also speed up issues.

Thanks for your great video! I have 3 hydrangeas that used to bloom but I had to move them because of construction and now they have not bloomed for 3 years - could it be because they dont get any morning sun and only afternoon sun around 2-3pm? Is there anyway to get these to bloom without moving them back to a spot w/ morning sun ? Thanks for any advice!!

That is interesting, and I suspect if you have not seen blooms for three years, that this may be a sun issue. Several plants that I grow have lost blooms because I protected them from sun too much. I think they might benefit from repositioning. perhaps in the dormant season.

Thank you for a very informative video. However, I had googled "hydrangea blooms turning brown and drying out". Up until last week, they looked great, but now I am unable to cut them for vases. The variety is Limelight Penacle I believe" They are super large white cone shapes that turn soft pink in the fall. The leaves look just fine. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your h elp.

I planted new ones almost 2 months ago and I can't move them out of the Maryland sun. I can't find get umbrellas to cover them. Brown burnt leaves and flowers as well. Are they dead or saveable? I grew up in Snoqualmie. I miss the fact that ferns are free on the roadside, lol!

Two years ago, when I did this video, I had a few that were hit really hard by a heat wave that lasted for a couple weeks. They looked ugly, but all recovered with new growth. I felt like I had burnt leaves for a while that summer, and many I trimmed off as it started growing new leaves. Each climate is something special, but like you say, there is something really special about the Pacific NW area!

My aborescens grow to over 6 feet tall and droop while many blooms seem too weighty, especially after the first big wind. Should I prune them as they're growing or how do I control the height???

Yes, prune them to the shape and size you desire. In my area (Seattle), I do my main pruning in the winter when it is dormant, but I have cut it back after "flowering" and it recovered just fine! I try to prune above a new bud to ensure that life comes out of that spot.

Right now, July 7, 2024, we're having 100+ degrees, here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. My hydrangeas are in full bloom and I am trying to save them. We also have a really hot wind. The plants are so big, and established in the ground, that I'm finding it hard to keep up with watering. I did remove some blooms, so hopefully, it wouldn't have to work as hard to stay hydrated. Not working. I'm going to try and cover them, but I don't want to suffocate them either. My patio umbrella isn't big enough to shade them, so I guess I'm going to have to get creative. should I go to the hardware store and find some light weight clear plastic to cover them? HELP!!

We had this a couple years ago when I made this video, with temps staying above 100 for several days. I was not able to protect all of mine, but they all recovered just fine, and some even recovered over the weeks ahead. With that said, I would not trim or prune anything until after the heat wave goes away. Trying to umbrella can help by giving some reprieve in the heat of the afternoon. Also, adding mulch under the plant is quite helpful for the moisture retention, so perhaps do that and worry less about the watering. I have been out of town during this heat wave, and as I fly back in, I am sure there will be some wilting, etc., but so many people in our areas have beautiful hydrangea year after year, and survive strong sun just fine overall.

How big are those planters … what should be the size of container for hydrangeas

Those are large planters, probably 30" wide or so. The first two years in the planter, there will not be a space issue. Over time, I am seeing the need to add continual nutrients. I have not repotted them yet, but I am thinking some fresh soil will benefit them after a few years.

My hydrangea is nothing but brown sticks .not one leaf bud on it. The sicks are still strong .they don't break when I bend em but no green under the bark. Will it come back or not?

These sound dead, at least at the canes. Sometimes, the plant is still alive at the base and will kick out new growth. If they are being watered regularly and in a healthy location, perhaps leave it for a few weeks and see if new life comes up. Otherwise, I think that it is a goner.

What do I do if the white petal/flowers are brown slightly around the edges? The leaves are fine. I think it’s been slightly sun scorched as left on out the balcony during a couple of sunny days - I’ve just emailed you with a picture for help. Thank you!!

We just returned from a five day vacation. The hydrangeas are wilted and some of the flowers have turned brownish. They weren’t watered while we were gone and it apparently did not rain. Is it possible to bring the hydrangea flowers back to life? I’m not sure what color of hydrangeas, but they are pink.

Yes, the plants should be salvagable. I had a rough summer two years ago and all the ones that were hit hard by lack of watering and lots of sun are back. I am a pretty firm believer in mulching all my plants to help with water and nutrient retention, too! Lay a nice layer of an organic mulch around the plant...and even better, be sure to have some compost mixed in it, too!

My plant doesnt have sun scorch but one of the growing flower buds is browning.. around the bud its beautiful green. I have no idea what happened and what to do about it, if anything at all….

I might be a bit confused, but the flowers will turn brown eventually, and I usually clip them off. Sometimes, a branch or flower will have an issue, but if the rest of the plant is healthy, it might be something small, and I would cut it back on that sick or wounded part and see how it responds.

@@backyardadventureswithandy thank you for responding! The bud was in its tiny stages of growth, it still hasn’t flowered. It had turned a burned color as if some water had collected there and had gotten sun scorched but nothing around it had any signa of sun scorch. The other buds are a beautiful healthy green. I must point out that I went to look for it (its on the underside of the plant) and it is no longer brown😑 it has turned green. I am more confused now🤣

There are several reasons why the leaves turn brown, but if it was recently moved and experienced change, sometimes this can cause "shock" to the plant. This could be the change of temperatures or the change in the amount of sun it was used to, or the amount of water it dealing with. This also can happen from the plant facing lots of continuous sun and/or heat, but it sounds like this is not the case with your plant.

Hi! Im hoping that i can save my hydrangeas, Do you have any advice on Zone 9b hydrangeas? Im trying to figure out placing and even in the shade it still looks scorched. The leaves are wilting and so are the blooms, theyre in a big pot since theyre shrub hydrangeas, they also have black mulch and have recently used some fertilizer

Have you seen other people in your area who have been successful with a hydrangea? If so, then I think there is hope. I am not plant-smart enough to give a lot of advice, but I know that my plants have been quite healthy most years, but when temperatures hit the 100s and upper 90s for over a week or so a couple years ago, they took a beating. I'm in the Seattle area, so that is not a normal thing. The other person I would ask is local plant experts, like at a nursery. If you remember down the road, I'd be curious to hear what you learn!

Spots could be a disease, fungus, or pest. Check the underside and around the plant, and perhaps spray with a natural (or not) spray. I often go to the internet with pictures looking for something similar.

You failed to mention what type of hydrangea it was. Because some require shade or sun. The panicle hydrangeas like limelight requires full sun. The mountain hydrangeas like more shade. The mop head falls in between. I live in zone 7b. I have all three types. Otherwise great info. TY.
