This is fascinating. I'm a Balinese, my late grandmother used to tell bedtime story about how long ago Bali and Java is not separated by sea, how the people interact and migrate to another places because of social conflict and many other reasons. It's a story told generation by generation. Interesting how fairy tale story connect with science.

Even today there is a strong belief among Balinese people that the island of Java and Bali may not be connected as it would cause a terrible calamity something like Armageddon. Even the governor refused to consider plans to build a bridge or tunnel.

the Ex-Jawa people who migrated to Bali and became Balinese by *SOCIAL CONFLICTS* were migrated on Sultanate era. Which around 15-17th Centuries. Not million thousand of years ago. So, your story isn't connected to that story.

I'm Indonesian of Javanese and Papuan ancestry and currently living in Jakarta. Thank you for making this video of my ancestors' migration to Nusantara (Indonesian Archipelago). It was a very educational experience for me. Also, I think it would be great if you could make other videos of modern human migration to Indonesia since there's 4 migrations of it. First was the ancestors of Australian Aborigines, Papuan/ Melanesian and the "Negritos" that you explained in this video. Second was the Austroasiatic speaking people from Southern China to Mainland Southeast Asia (via Vietnam) to Indonesia. Third was the Austronesian speaking people from Taiwan to the Philippines and then Indonesia. Finally, the Indian, Arabs, Chinese, and European during the ancient maritime trade route and colonialism.

@wenderis
@wenderis Жыл бұрын
@random from Philippines recent largest genetic research, it seems that there could be 5 big waves of migrations. Other than the 4 you already mentioned, the other one is an unkown pre-austroasiatic group that today has similar genetic makeup with the Manobo people of Mindanao. Between 17000 to 12000 years ago.

As a Filipino Zoologist I would add that there are 5 major Islands in the Philippines during this time, Greater Luzon which comprises of Luzon and surrounding islands like Masbate and Catanduanes, Greater Mindoro, which is just a bigger Mindoro, Greater Panay, which comprises of Negros, Cebu and Panay Islands, Greater Mindanao which includes Mindanao, Leyte, Samar and Bohol, and Greater Sulu, which is made up of the entire islands in the Sulu Archipelago... The San Bernardino Straight was just deep enough to separate Luzon and Mindanao which is why you can only find Tarsier in Mindanao, Bohol, Leyte and Samar, and the seas surrounding Mindoro too was deep enough to separate it, that's why you can only find the Tamaraw there, so do the Sulu, that's why you can only find Loris there and not in Mindanao which is just a few km away... Palawan is as said, connected to the rest of Sundaland which is why you can find families there that you can find in the rest of the Asia but not on the rest of the Philippines like the Pangolins... If you want to read more then I highly suggest you read the works of Lawrence R. Heaney

Yeah he also got it (semi) wrong when he said Tarsier isnt found west of wallace's line. Well technically, he's accidentally correct because PH tarsier and Borneo-Belitung tarsier are now under different genus altogether.

where is human being from ? from many substances, we can decided that human being is moving from Australia up to Indonesia and up to Malaysia and up to Vietnam and Thailand and up to Taiwan (orchid island) and Bangladesh (southern near Burma) . and from Taiwan is going to move to China and east to America and west to Europe. 2 evidences show it. evidence 1: the drawing on the cave wall in Indonesia is earlier than the drawing on the cave wall in France. it's about ten thousand years in different ! evidence 2: from the same shape fishing boat where it can transport passengers and goods in Vietnam while the same shape boats can transport sailors (fishermen) only in Taiwan and Bangladesh. the correct places are indicated in the above paragraph.

Your video is one of the clearest explanation of Sundaland migrations I've come across to date. Thank you for your hard work. I was pretty confused with my DNA admixture results and while running them across multiple databases confirmed the admixtures more or less, they haven't clarified my confusion as I can't relate the results to the oral history of my lineage. This video explains it quite a bit together with a journal article examining the genetic makeup of the South East Asian Malays.

I have realized these migrations too, when I was looking into haplogroup distributions in different regions and philogenetic ancient human studies. I also thought P have migrated over east asia, because P1 are mostly modern altai, tuva turkic and nivkh people in northeast asia. I think nearly all agglutinative languages have connection with sundaland as they all are related to C1b, K2b ancestors (also we can add D). Those people are polynesian, australian, melanesian, austronesian, austroasiatic, tibeto-burman, thai-kadai, sinitic, koreanic-japonic, mongolic-tungusic, dene-yeniseian, native american, hunnic-altaic, turkic-ugric and other languages. I have tried to classify those people according to general haplogroup and general language as matching: C1b, C2 - polynesian, melanesian, east austronesian, C3 - mongolic, tungusic, C4 - melanesian, aboriginal australian, D1, D2 - tibeto-burman, D3 - ainu japanese, K2b - Tianyuan man, M, S - papuan, N, N1 - proto-uralic, N2, N3 - uralic, finnic, O - thai-kadai, O1 - austroasiatic, west austronesian, O2 - sinitic, chinese, O3 - koreanic, japonic, P - philippinese, malaisian, P1 - hunnic, altaic, tuvinian and other haplogroups related to these people. I think that Q, Q1a, Q1b, R, R1, R1a, R1b, R2 people are also related to those people as genetically connected and have spoken old similar languages as: Q1a - slab grave culture, ket, yeniseian, Q1b - nadene/atabasq, native american, R, R1 - mal'ta buret, tagar cultures, uyghur turkic, R1a - hunnic, turkic, ugric, oghur/oghuz, balkar turkic, R1b - tyrrhenian, vasconic, basq, bashkir, saka/sumer, R2 - tamil, dravidian. Also, north caucasian avar andic, burushaski hunza, sumerian, elamite are mostly altai region originated R1a, R1b related people. So, I think we can add these people and can see this huge agglutinative people as linked to eachother reaching from southeast asia to australia, polynesia, east asia, norteast asia, americas, siberia, east euroasia, central asia, south asia, west asia, mesopotamia, anatolia, balkans, north caucasia, west euroasia, central europe, west europe, northwest europe.

Amazing effort to exclude West Papua from Australia, but rock art discovered in West Papua a few years ago has also been dated to 50,000 BC, and what you view as two separate land masses are one, the Torres Strait between 'Australia' and Papua was flooded about seven thousand years ago 5,000BC or more than 40 thousand years after Papuan and Australian ancestors arrived. Modern Asians did not appear in S-E-Asia until around 20 thousand years ago.

@@geonomad1 Thanks so much. I suppose the most difficult aspect is estimating when the migration occurred. If it may be assumed Java Man and Floresiensis originally traveled from Africa it suggests the migration may have occurred at least two million years ago based on African Erectus fossil dates. I'm betting you're already aware of the fossil dating, so please disregard if my feedback is obvious.

@isnirashid9221 Thank you for the comments, and I also watched the youtube link you shared. I have no doubt the earliest modern human DNA in Sundaland dates to 60-70 kya, but my question is asking about pre-human migration to Java and Flores. For example, Java Man dates to at least 700,000 years old and is not a modern human. Homo floresiensis dates to roughly 100,000 years old, and is also not a modern human. This means a much earlier African migration occurred over 1 million years ago likely involving Homo erectus, and so my question concerns whether these pre-humans crossed water to access Java and Flores, or if 1-2 million years ago these islands were part of the mainland. The reason why this question has importance is because if Java Man and Floresiensis crossed water it suggests they were capable of ocean navigation, at least to some degree. But my initial guess is the entire Indonesian archipelago was a peninsula connected to the mainland 1-2 million years ago. Hopefully GeoNomad will make a video on this migration because these were likely the first pre-humans in Asia.

I was educated in an environment that held to the Six Days Creation story. I have always been fascinated with Geography and, therefor, the differences between the human and animal inhabitants of different climates and ecosysyems. It never made any logical sense to me that all these differences could have come about in about 6000 years. One approach of those who teach this illogical and disproven idea was to stress that God had put the different races on different continents to prevent race mixing. The great thing about science and education is that it relieves a person of the burden of outmoded and outdated ideas and proves those who cling to them are choosing to be willingly ignorant. As one sage has pointed out you can have your own beliefs but not your own facts. Of course, a well put together video such as yours could never be used as educational curriculum in Public Schools as it night violate some parents religious beliefs. This flies in the face of the public school's obligation to teach what is the facts and to prepare students to be capable, u functioning and discerning adults. It is this same goal that instructs pupils to use proper grammar no matter how they speak at home, to accept that some aspects of math are always going to mean 2 plus 2 equals 4, that many concepts in science are "just theories," but theories the way ideas are formulated. It is genuinely too bad that so many people are threatened by new discoveries and by different faiths. As it is said It was a brave person who ate the first oyster.

I had a similar experience with evolution ruining prevalent belief system. Except that it wasn't religion strictly speaking, but more a humanist ideology taken as a fact. It was an awkward moment to discover that people around me believe in evolution, though implicitly believe that our brain was exempt from evolution in at least last 100k years. Learning brutal fact that there evolution did not magically stop, if anything brain was under strong evolutionary pressure after our ancestors migrated in to new environments or tried luck with farming... it meant that we're observing right now results of diverging evolution and some social differences are genetic in nature, while people don't dare to say so, as they would cause outrage.

Thank you for sharing this insightful commentary. I was raised to accept the bible as truth and for decades never questioned such stories as the Ark until learning archeology, anthropology, genetics, and how various species were located across continents. I compliment that you too made this journey albeit likely quicker than myself, but so glad to join you and others on this amazing path to revelation!

A little information for you! There are many finds of ancient human fossils millions of years old in Indonesia (not in Africa) including hundreds of ancient volcanoes. We have to think simply, The land on earth was formed due to volcanic eruptions and gave rise to living creatures in it. Now we reverse the migration route, that humans actually migrate from the land called Sundaland to the rest of the world, including Africa. On foot heading north because they were expelled after the humans ate the forbidden fruit from the land of the fragments of heaven or sailed west on the Ark because of a major flood disaster. #trytothinkatthemostbasiclevel

Well, southern china at the time composed of Baiyue (Austronesian, Tai-Kadai, Hmong, Tibeto-Burman, and Austroasiatics) they shared broad similarities (not how people just think sailing is reserved for austronesians only and become austronesian nationalists). They shared serpent stories, nagas, animism, teeth blackening, rice farming, sailing, much more. Austronesians wore feathers, austroasiatics wore kemben (Javanese) (kben Khmer), flowers, gold. Daic, Austronesians also wore similar headdresses like minang people. but also it is found in austroasiatic populations, Daic and Hmong populations kind of wear similar headdresses as well. From these points, try exploring yourself, youd find a broad interesting connection, but don't forget to analyze native americans as well, with feather hats and much more.

@@mitismee are you indonesian/malay? If you look at genetics, Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Peninsular Melayu and portions of Sumatra and Borneo and Sulawesi have Austroasiatic ancestry, and the former going up to 50%+ Austroasiatic (Before Austronesian migrants from Taiwan, Philippines). That is why their culture and looks (Malay, Balinese, Cham, Javanese, Sundanese, Acehnese, more) can be similar to mainland, and no it's not only Indian influence, indigenous. Tai-Kadai and Austronesian are related, and they genetically cluster together (Viet, Thai, Filipino) Indonesian, Malaysian, Khmer cluster with each other because austroasiatic not austronesian (genetic) Linguistic, yes, Malay, filipino, Indo cluster with each toher. There are austroasiatic words in Western Indonesia, but no one has done intensive study yet, you have to know both khmer, maybe thai and viet, together with Sumatran and Javan languages to see what words are similar. You can find more on Quora. Search "Javanese dna chart" on google as well.
