Sunday Longplay - Castlevania: The Holy Relics (CV1 NES Hack)

Time for another ROM hack this week on Sunday Longplay! This time it's a Castlevania 1 hack from Optomon (who also made Chorus of Mysteries, another hack I really should check out sometime) called Castlevania: The Holy Relics.
This game employs several gameplay changes over the original game, including being able to play the first 5 stages in any order, kind of like in Mega Man, and also another set of subweapons in the form of the titular holy relics, allowing you extra powers like killing everything on the screen at once, making your whip extra powerful for a period of time, restoring your life, or even dropping down from the top of the screen. I like it!
It's also worth noting that Dracula is not the final boss! It's actually a necromancer and old acquaintance of Drac named Lord Ghulash, who had been searching the ruins of Dracula's castle for the titular relics and had been using them to terrorize Transylvania.

It is so strange to see how much graphics work from my own projects are in here lol. Optomon credits me under my old alias "Bit-Blade". I only found out this hack existed a few months ago. A lot of this was from a Castlevania 3 project I abandoned called "End of Destiny". As usual, I see Opto's ASM and music editing are top notch.

Indeed. Chorus of Mysteries was another of his hacks I played that I really loved. As a Metroid fan also, I still need to play his Rogue Dawn hack sometime.

Too bad the game is an unbalanced mess at least the copy we got. Hit detection was bad delayed button inputs barely healing items, enemies that go through walls or get stuck there but can still hit you, bosses that stay on top of you and so many issues and cheap deaths due to how broken the game is

I am so glad to see nobody complaining about "No Dracula", that is good, a vampire hunter can have a good range of enemies instead of just Dracula.

This one is one of the easier hacks and one of the very best. It's actually beatable without dedicating 12 years to.

This is a great hack for sure. I love how you can tackle the stages in any order like Mega Man (another one of my favorite classic game series!).

I think this game looks and sounds amazing. I think a couple of the levels even possess their own original musical compositions which I find very impressive. I think the boss designs could probably use just a little bit of work to make them look even more intimidating and scarier, but otherwise, this is fantastic.

I love Castlevania ROM hacks and play through almost every single one especially around Halloween.. but for the life of me I cannot get holy relics to work on any emulator sadly %,(

The Final Boss looks like a rejected character from Popeye the Sailor man. Game looks good, though.

Deborah Cliff , that did it for me!! Anything with a hint of C.V. II always hits that 1988 spot for me!!! WTF, fights Death and reward is a cup of coffee as a treasure?! Sure why not lolz....Even the ole' dead need their Starbucks hit too!!?! Luv it!!!

Just don't hit it with your head, or you'll make a hole. But seriously, I always felt like Castlevania 2 is one of those games that doesn't deserve all the crap it gets.

Not sure where to find the soundtrack by itself. I don't think Optomon (the maker of this hack) posted it on his channel.

It looks surprisingly good, but some of the color choices are a bit severe. Pixel art can be subtle in its effectiveness and extreme as necessary with regard to the palette and sprite color combo choices. Still looks awesome; would like to try it on a CRT TV.

I don't hate Simon's Quest, though I do agree it is by far the weakest of the NES trilogy. And I also agree, this game did it much better.

@@MetalSmasherGaming I don't hate it either. But the most fans are hating this game. And if Simon's Quest were more like a classic Castlevania like 1 and 3 or this hack, it would be more popular.

OK. That's a neat little touch. I'm glad to see that although Castlevania Legends was stricken from canon it still left a legacy.

@@MetalSmasherGaming , I strike Igarashi from canon then. We will see who lasts longer, his work that rejected Castlevania: Legends and the Saturn additions to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, or myself singlehandedly saving the entire Castlevania franchise.

I'd say it's roughly the same as the original. If you can handle the original, you can handle this just fine.

So far this really isent half bad. All elements of cv1 are in place but the sprites look a bit goofy and our protags color sort of bleeds into himself. Other than that bravo.
