Hack by OK Impala!: www.romhacking.net/hacks/6292/
This week on Sunday Longplay, it's another ROM hack for one of my favorite NES games of all time, and a project I had been following for over a year that just finished development 4 days ago. Welcome to Zelda 2: Amida's Curse!
One day Link finds a strange portal to the world of Amida, a land with a deep emotional link to him. Link embarks on another adventuresome quest to unravel Amida's secrets and return to Hyrule!
This hack is a passion project that has spanned a year and a half that changes everything in the game, from the overworld, to the palaces, to the graphics (using Zelda 2 Redux as a base), new town architecture pieces, a brand-new original soundtrack, etc. The end result is probably the most beautiful and eye-popping Zelda 2 hack I've played so far.
Difficulty-wise, the hack was meant to be a little easier than the base Zelda 2, but it's still not without its tricky moments. Here, the emphasis is placed on exploration rather than combat, so the difficulty lies more with finding where you're supposed to go in some spots. I was stumped for a little bit trying to find the Jump and Ice (replacing Thunder) spells, and I got lost in the final dungeon for a little bit before realizing that one of the elevators went through the floor.
While other Zelda 2 hacks have used custom soundtracks before, like Resurrection of Ganon and the endgame of Winter Solstice, Amida's Curse probably has my favorite OST of the three. The side-scrolling themes for the action scenes and palaces in particular are almost as good as the base game. Bentglasstube did great work on it!
Speaking of new additions, while Resurrection of Ganon added one extra dungeon to the game, Amida's Curse adds two! So there are now a total of 9 dungeons in the game as opposed to the base game's 7. More is always better in that regard.
Conclusion: Zelda 2: Amida's Curse was an 18-month passion project, and the passion really shows in the end result. The most beautiful Z2 ROM hack I've played, with an intriguing new story, and puzzles that really make you think. Yes, the game is easier than Z2, but that doesn't mean it sucks. Far from it.

I watched this game being streamed and decided to see the rest of it. Here's some critiques and not meant to be negative, but constructive. First off, the story seems a little confusing especially with the triforce appearing at the end? No mention of needing the triforce to get back into Hyrule. I'd like to see some original bosses and more original creatures in some of these hacks. Its somewhat disappointing to see the same exact bosses or barely a reskin on some of them. For example the water temple. Why not have some kind of sea/water creature instead of Horsehead? The leveling and the amount of red potions looked like it made things very easy except for the actual exploring. I thought the temple music was cool, but for the final temple you may want a darker or a heavy action kind of theme to it. It elevates the last area/boss.

I agree. How many times in the original Zelda 2 have you Fairied across a difficult platforming section only to be blocked off by a wall at the end? I also love how some of the rooms in the temples were built with this new mechanic in mind.

That palace theme sounds soooo much like a lot of SMS music. I like that there are no overworld enemies. They slow down the game and allow unintended skips. No random encounters forces this hack to be excellent on the exploration aspect of Zelda and it delivers.

I've been playing this but am stuck because of glitches- A key at the end of level 4 isn't there for me when I play it so I'm stuck 1 key short. I also start with more health / magic containers as shown here, and getting too many magic containers glitches the game pretty severely and basically hard locks it. Am I using the wrong ROM version? I've tried it with a few that I have and the results are the same on all of them. Not sure where / who else to ask about this.
@okimpala
@okimpala 2 жыл бұрын
Hi AC3DG. This is likely not an issue of your ROM, but this is caused by already having a savefile in your emulator folder of another Zelda II game (with the same filename) when first starting Amida's Curse. The emulator is then loading a savefile from another Zelda II game, that's why you start with too many heart/magic containers and why keys are in the wrong place. You can fix this by renaming your ROM to Zelda II - Amida's Curse.nes and then start the game again in your emulator. Start the game normally and now you should start with 3 hearts and 2 magic containers. The game should work fine now. You can also find this explained in the ReadMe.

@@okimpala Its ok now, I messed up and accidentally erased my game and started over, got passed it now, and now working on the fairy dungeon, surprised there was no crystal in the Blue Knight dungeon.

@@okimpala excellent ROM hack! I’d love to see you do another. I found this hack challenging yet fair. A different take on the original while being original all its own. Some Z2 hacks are just simply too difficult for what feels like no reason. Yours has a great balance, flow and the towns people actually give decent tips. For example, as much as I want to like Winter Soltice it’s just too hard. Thanks again!

@@chrismisc7856 Thank you for sharing this. I worked hard to give Amida's Curse a fair difficulty, as many Z2 hacks tend to have a high difficulty aimed at experienced players. I wanted to create a hack that was accessible for the average player. Good to see you recognized that!

It's a ROM hack, basically a new game made from modifying the original Zelda 2 game.

some secret passes in this game are insane. Without your walkthrough it's impossible to figure out where the hell i suppose to go.
