Sunday Swatching.
Once or twice a month, I'll be swatching various mediums in various ways, most often watercolours. Sometimes they'll be new ones, sometimes old favourites in new combinations. Join me in exploring the joy of watching pigment and water play together!
Today you're joining me in the final stages of swatching the Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress Watercolour Pencils, all 73 of them! As I swatch, I'm sharing thoughts about using the pencils in different ways, as well as musing about the impact different colours can have on us.
I bought everything I'm using in this video myself (though I waited for price reductions and offers to do it!).
Tim Holtz Distress Watercolor Pencils by Ranger Ink - sets 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. It's Set 6 I'm working with in this video.

I was able to grab the first 3 sets on a holiday sale last year - and also realized a few of my favorites weren't included (unchartered mariner main among them!) - so now of course I have the next 3 sets on my wishlist! Love how you're swatching the pencils, will have to make the time to swatch my sets as well. I'm a fellow cool-tone lover - especially in the purples (hello villainous potion!) and the blues/turquoises, and love lost shadow. Like you, I appreciate others using the warm colors but have a hard time using them myself (or rather using them and thinking it looks nice LOL). OH! and as soon as you mentioned your preference for the melancholy side of music etc, I thought "well oh course, you're also drawn to Shakespeare!" 😊💜

I'm more than drawn to Shakespeare, he's paid the bills for most of my working life! But yes, that strain of melancholy runs through my love of words and music as well as of colours, there's no doubt about it. I hope you can find the remaining sets on a good offer soon - I very much agree about Uncharted Mariner, and as I say in the video Set 6 has some real beauties in it. I don’t have all of the pencils but the ones I have are fabulous. They’re so wonderfully reactive. I totally understood what you were saying about colours that feel like you while other colours, although gorgeous don’t resonate when you use them yourself even though they’re great on other peoples work. I like how you swatched them in different ways. I may have to re do mine 😉

Hi, Alison... your enthusiasm for the Distress watercolor pencils encourages me to have another play with them. Perhaps I need to look at them more like a mixed media pencil? Or... embrace the concept of using them differently from the sets of high quality watercolor pencil options? I got the first 3 sets right away as if it's Distress, it's in my arsenal but I've dragged my feet on these last 3 sets. I will appreciate and enjoy any future "few minutes of fun" playing with these pencils. Thank you again for sharing your time, energy, creativity and inspiration. Enjoy your Sunday!

I think it's a really good idea to think of them as a mixed media pencil - they are really somewhere between a watercolour pencil and something like a Neocolor crayon, so they play in different ways. So happy you found the video helpful, and if it gets the Distress pencils out of their tins, then I'm happy for them too!!

I was so excited that I commented before I saw those last few seconds of scanning the sets in color grouping! Glorious! Any other collection/storage tips would be welcome

Oh good - I'm glad you got to the end to see the pencil tins. For now, I'll stick with those for storage... I like the metal tins, and the see-through covers make it easy to see which set you're grabbing. And yes, there will be more pencil playtime coming up soon. It's great to see this Alison, it's even giving me a better feeling of the sets 2 and 3 that I have. Please could you show the all arranged by colors swatch tags in close? I love especially greens and seeing those of set 6 I think this set will go to my wishing list even when I decided after 2 and 3 that more of these pencils were not my needs (I have Neocolor II that I use frequently). All about watercolor with whatever material interests me, so please continue.

Just found your channel this evening so would like to say hello from Amarillo Texas. We are located in the panhandle area of Texas, also known as the Golden Spread in these parts. Because we do not have a lot of green. We are primarily flat and yellow. Cattle and oil country. Very cold in the winter, because surprisingly enough our altitude is nearly the same as Denver Colorado. But we have opposite weather from them in the summer as we have frequent droughts and commonly are very very dry. But I am not sure why I brought all that up….lol…. But I almost always swatch small tags at the same time that I swatch any paints, or other sources of pigment. Then I use the small tags in my journals as ephemera.

I'm happy you found the channel - welcome on board. Maybe I can see why your gold/green thoughts came up - those colours are sitting just to the right of the screen throughout! Swatches make great ephemera, or focal points (or backgrounds) in journal pages. This took some time, but it was definitely worth the effort. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

They look beautiful! I do watercolor but I don’t have those partly because I don’t know how to use them and the sheer number is somewhat overwhelming! Of course I have that many and many many more regular watercolor tubes/pans! I’ll look to see if you’ve used them on yt! I honestly don’t need something more to play with! If I lived 10 lives, I wouldn’t need any more but why do we keep on keeping on buying? We must all be a bit wacky but we are a lot of fun!!😳

Yes, it's a really good way to find out how you like to work with any medium, especially one like these pencils which have a number of different looks depending on how you use them. Lovely gentle video! I have the first 3 sets and certainly would like the second 3! I’ve always been ‘afraid’ of dipping the pencils into water but after watching this I’m going to have a go! Thank you for inspiration and information! 💝

I was also somewhat concerned about the dipping. Thought I heard someone in previous video say if you’re dipping then you need two sets. I’m definitely not buying two sets. I might try this dip idea now. It’s not as messy as I thought it would be

@@joycehuff9769 think Tim Holtz said he had two sets - well guess he would! lol! But like you I’m not buying two sets! Think it was about wet tips touching each other and causing contamination but when I saw Alison dabbing on kitchen towel I thought that was ideal with minimal waste! 🤗

@catherinelancaster511 Yes, Tim did indeed say he had two sets... and as you say, that's fine for him! But I can't really see a need for that myself (and couldn't afford it anyway!!)... and you end up with very pretty kitchen towel pieces too!

As with all swatching, it's about exploring the colours and the medium - finding out exactly how it looks and works on paper. That's never the same as it looks in the pencil or in the tube or in the watercolour pan. So it gives me a chance to explore and experiment, which means when I'm choosing a medium or a colour in the future, that choice will be informed by the knowledge I've gained when swatching. But I also love doing it! And specifically with these pencils, as I think I mention in the video, it was about helping me work out how I wanted to sort and store the pencils. They come in mixed sets, and I wanted to sort them into an order that works for my colour brain. It was much clearer to do that with the swatches than from the pencils themselves. Glad you enjoyed it. It's not paper, it's a craft mat (similar to a re-usable teflon baking sheet, but this one happens to be white). Thanks for watching!

I haven’t seen these distress pencils on anyone else’s videos. What is the difference between them and Neocolor II crayons?

They are fairly similar, I would say... the Neocolors are a bit softer - you can get more detail with these pencils, and subtler light tones too. You always get quite a lot of pigment on the paper with Neocolors in my experience, whereas with these you can go very light. But you probably wouldn't need to have both in your stash... though you might like to! These pencils are probably most exciting for anyone who already likes working with the Tim Holtz Distress colour palette - so you are working with familiar colours, and you get lots of muted vintage shades as well as brights. And lovely storage tins too, of course! Hope that's of some help. Tim Holtz himself has two long live demo videos using the pencils - well worth checking out - and I'll be sharing some more videos using them in different ways soon.

@@w0rdsandp1ctures it seems that these pencils have more of a color range which is enticing. But you know it doesn’t take much for us artists to get excited 😆. As with everything else in my stash, I HAVE to have EVERY color or I might miss out. Logical, eh 😂. I have Tim’s video in my queue that I’m planning to watch as I swatch my newest watercolor palette.
