Suppose it would likely come across that way if it were a “regular Sunday” for sure. But we think the core concept can be cool if integrated contextually!
@Brian-12345
@Brian-12345 4 ай бұрын
100% agree. Corny, cringy, distracting. What are we trying to accomplish? Be cool for the sake of being cool? I want to eliminate distractions. Intentionally create an atmosphere where people can worship, and the music itself should transparently get out of the way of that worship experience. The examples later in the video where vocal-like effects are layered into a pad to subtly give it character is a nice touch. I already use SK's Whispy Violin sometimes in a similar way. In my opinion, once it starts to sound like vocal chops, it's too garish.

@@Brian-12345 True. I don't know the full context, so I may be wrong, but ignoring musical element - this crowd is definitely not cheering for Jesus. And this guy is definitely happy being in the center of attention of these thousands of people. This could be worship, but not of God... even if for that small moment, still looks bad.

Does anybody else notice the uncanny valley between the newer vocal chops and the ohs and ahs of keyboard sounds from yesterday? Also, I think that it’s worth noting that a lot of worship songs over the years and across all genres, have produced very good, unique and iconic, intro and leads for their songs. I feel like this is just another take on an otherwise long standing tradition in music

For House of the Lord, a lot of times, we do this as an opener and we hit it hot right from the start. I listened to what you played in your vid and honestly, I like the SK SSP more than what you played. If we were to do that song with the downplayed intro, I am ready to have the mod wheel at zero for the first phrase play thru, then 100% on the mod wheel when we hit the opening phrase in he second time. Make sense? Thanks for sharing David always appreciate your vids 😎✌️

I feel it is musical expression and a form of art- I’m all for it in worship if it’s being done with the right heart. It won’t always fit. People may or may not like it but ultimately we should not be aiming to please people but the Lord.

Enjoyed the video. Is it worth only partially digging into the weeds on the production side? I’m not sure how much of a distinction you could make from a sound perspective between a vocal sample vs the ooos and ahhs on older keyboards vs forment engines on something like the micro/minifreak. These could all be used as starting points for this sound. On the other hand other than where the sound comes from, I’m not sure there is much technique difference in any sampled sound. There is nothing stopping anyone from multi sampling a whole choir and making a sound from that. If the rest of the comment is not very clear, let me try and summarize. Using vocal style sounds in worship as a performance technique vs how we produce said sounds in the first place. To really throw a wrench in the production side. Last time we did house of the Lord I made a forment sound on the minifreak and then sampled that and played it from a circuit rythm.

Funny how this vidoe went on. I was about to talk about how it's like guitar adding certain FX. Also how using it in different ways could change peoples thoughts on it. I think that vocal chop trend only really hit youth and conferences because it's not the stylistic choice of a braoder church context. This will always come down to the church itself. If this works to serve the style of the church and your worship, then great, use it.
@brucelittle3958

If our church would attempt to play intros like you mentioned they would most likely use the guitar to do it. They bought a $3,500 Yamaha keyboard to get the best they could get and use the sound that comes up when the keyboard is turned on! Why, is there anything else? 😀 It is actually a nice piano sound with a pretty pad behind it you don't notice unless the keyboardist is playing by himself. I did recommend Sunday Keys to them! I honestly feel there can be a time and place in worship for a soloist to shine their talent for the glory of God, but not to draw attention to themselves. For a Youth Group Jam Night or a church outdoor picnic?---I could see that!

I normally play the intro line with a synth sound layered with piano. Or for weeks with a more acoustic arrangement, piano alone carries the line just fine.

I added it a bit on some of my non-worship stuff as it was tasteful but I always thought it was kinda cringe so I used it sparingly lol. Personal preference. I haven't found a single case to use it in worship though. Update: I was still watching the video when writing this. I've never realized those Phil Wickham parts were vocal chops. Thought they were just EDM pads of some sort. Interesting....

Vocal chops are one major thing what will define the 2010s as an era, like excessive gated reverb on snares in the 80s. And I don't think it will age well. Typically didn't like it when it was in, don't like it now. With exceptions of course. And that's all subjective opinion, more power to you if you like it, it can certainly be used well. Pretty neat to have it in Sunday Keys. Edit: I particularly mean the prominent pitched-up chipmunk-sounding vocal sounds. Other usages can be great. Good video as always!

imho, AKA "When did worship music try to stop becoming a popular concert for people's fun and more like worshiping the Lord" So many will riot at that statement (smh), but really, many times abuse of the lead that gets a rise out of the congregation can seem to tend towards attitude making it like a concert mode instead of worship service i think. Using lead like that for youth services, very good contextual use probably. For a main worship service for all, I'm not so sure and it may not be fitting depending on one's congregational worship context. Bottom line: We need to be careful to not mislead those we're charged in leading worship music to help attitudes be more towards reverence (even in jubiliee mode) than personal exuberance in the music styles we use....whether it be with lead styles, background music, whatever.

Halfway in the video so far, I would do the vocal sound for House of the Lord, doesn't seem to over power but fits in. But would definitely not do something like the song in the intro, that's too much.. leave that for a youth service instead lol.

Well some say these type of musics and songs are what today’s youth. While the songs are very mild and not have deep meaning to them, just the music arrangements. Imagine, telling them how rich and meaningful of hymns and other gospels songs are.

Sampling has been massive in “secular” music since the 80s. If your worship band like it - go for it. If they’d rather like folk/rock then use that. Use whatever works for your congregation! Worship should be a mirror of what likes your worship group likes. Praise God in whatever style/s you like - there is no right and wrong.
