This is a short documentary from the 2019 Dragon’s Breath Expedition, where our team of engineers partnered up with technical divers to bring the SUNFISH® AUV to robotically explore deep Namibian caves beyond the range of human divers.
This was a US Deep Caving Team expedition supported by the National Geographic Society and Schmidt Marine Technology Partners. We received additional sponsorship from Burnham Polymeric and Seacraft. Finally, our friends at Dantica Diving Adventures and IANTD South Africa helped us pull it all together in the field. Heartfelt thanks to all involved!
The film was crafted by Reel Water Productions using footage shot by Jason Gulley, Jill Heinerth, and Geko Expeditions. We hope you enjoy it.

What an amazing expedition. I was born in the country that used to be called South West Africa, and now Namibia since their independence 21 March 1990, 59 years ago and did not know about this place. The Dragon's Breath Cave is located in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia on private land, and is not accessible to the general public. The cave was discovered by Roger Ellis during a caving expedition to the area in 1986. It is named for the moist air rising from its entrance which resembled the breath of a dragon. (Wikipedia). The Kalahari desert is the oldest in the world, and now they found the biggest underground lake in the world also in Namibia. Wow! Thank you for sharing.

Super cool. I found your video because I saw an article about Devil's Hole near Death Valley and how the water in it was sloshing around from an earthquake in Mexico, 1,500 miles away. Its depth is unknown, but it must be huge. It's also home to a unique Pupfish, evolved to live in the constant 92-degree water (geothermal heat). I actually wondered if anyone had built an autonomous sub that could go down and map something like that. A quick search found you guys. I'm an engineer and just love this kind of stuff! After high school, I worked for a company in San Diego called Hydro Products (late '70's). They made what they called an RCV (Remotely Controlled Vehicle). It had cameras, manipulators and other gear. It used a tether, carrying power and control/video. So fun to work on!

Hello Pierre! Yes, we are hoping to have more regular updates as well. Fieldwork has been pretty difficult the last couple of years as you might imagine.

That's phenomenal. I wonder how many more hidden caves are out there and what secrets do they hold. I wonder if there's also an isolated cavern with its own flora and fauna.
