This male pumpkinseed (sunfish) is shown vigorously defending his nest site from intruders. As you can see, this is a full time job (and a tiring one!) to ensure that the most eggs and fry survive.
The female sunfish plays no role in the protection of the nest or rearing of the young - this task is left solely to the male of the species.
