Instantly clicked on this one. These are two crops that I ALWAYS grow, because they’re my kids nicknames lol. My daughters nickname is Sunflower and my sons nickname is Tater 😂 They also do very well for me in NC zone 8a. I live in pure sand soil, so potatoes and other root crops do very well here. The sand let’s them grow free and huge. Thanks for the videos Mark! I’m a country farmer born and bred, but we can always learn new things and your knowledge is vast. We appreciate ya 🙂

Apparently, you don't have squirrels! :-) They are tearing up the seed heads and breaking my sunflower branches when they try climbing them. Oh well, plenty to share! Love walking barefoot in my yard! Heard it's called, "Earthing." Best to you!

It seems like everything you show us is successful and great. Can you make a video about your "failures" this year? Or things you learned from? This is not a criticism, I think it would be interesting to hear what your challenges are!

Your side kick always steals the show...too cute. Love to see other people mixing flowers with their gardens. I have done that for years. Not sunflowers but other annuals. People think im nuts but the garden needs color as well. The garden is pretty much green so a pop of color every here and there brightens up the garden. Nice sunflowers thou. Nice and tall. I grew a few this year but my squirrels always find them and they dont last long. I do thou plant the sunflowers for them anyways.

I'll have to try planting sunflowers next year if only to feed the birds and the squirrels. They fill in rather nicely. Your sunflowers look great. I've learned several new & helpful things about gardening from watching your videos. Gardens are always a work in progress. Thanks for sharing Mark!

I planted some sweet potatoes as well, was trying to get the ones from my country. Got some on etsy, I'm really pleased with how they look. Not sure what my variety is..... hahaha, I'm use to the red skin and white flesh. Makes good sweet potato pudding. My only issues are the deer. I wish they will stop eating at my sweet potato leaves 🙂. I feel the same way with the frost blanket, I'm like whenever we get that frost in maryland the blankets would have already been out..... I'm counting on those potatoes to do what my other white potatoes didnt do and that is produced well. 😀 Thanks for sharing

I always enjoy one of your videos. Also congratulations on your subscriber rate! Recently I responded back to you about the high prices of produce. Any suggestions on how to grow a garden in a apartment? Where I live here in Florida as I age required 55 plus community. Throughout the community we have bananas, Florida avocados, papayas all types of oranges and grapefruit and my call the fact they call a pineapple alley. Just need suggestions on how to grow everyday produce in a condo. Thanks for any suggestions!

Fun, I wish I would have planted sweet potatoes this year. It's just that harvest time is when I'm soooo burnt out in the garden. But I'll regret not having them:)
@forrestbehr87782 жыл бұрын
You may have already done this, so I apologize if so, but I'd be interested in other beneficial combinations you've used with success. I've heard of combos that help alleviate a pest that one plant alone would likely suffer from. And as always, just love your presentation Mark...you're very "accessible" as a mentor for us new gardeners...very enjoyable to watch. Thanks!

I'm not a big fan of single flower plants or large flowers in general like sunflowers or dahlias but I think it's probably because I don't know how to use them. I very much prefer smaller bushy ones that throw out tons of small flowers and/or have a beautiful foliage (i.e. geraniums, asters, cinquefoils). I might try sunflowers just to provide seeds for birds since I'm thinking about taking down the hawthorn hedge next year. I don't really like the thorns (I already had two dig out two thorns from my feet this summer alone) but that means loss of berries for birds.

Hi Mark. Once again a very informative and entertaining video. The sunflowers and sweet potatoes look marvelous. Great way to start my day with coffee and to watch another one of your gardening videos. Keep em coming. Are all those varieties of sunflowers deer resistant? Do share. All the best from across the miles here in NYC. Jonathan

Did you know that you can use the new tips of the sweet potato vine just as you would spinach, saute in butter and salt. Yummy with much less of the high oxalic acid of spinach
