I guess the nautical version of safety first was not prioritized by that crew and Murphy's law took their lives. This story is a gem, as I got my dive certification in Florida. I love hearing dive stories from both.of you. Dont forget, Palawan- Coron is only 1 island away, and the WW2 Japanese wrecks can even be seen by snorkel. Just pack some good fins. Liked.

Man this story is simply amazing, I remember reading about Mel Fisher and the Attocha back in a Skin Diver Magazine sometime around 1985 or 1986 i was hooked on diving from then on, I remember how sad I was when I read about the accident of his son and daughter-in-law, this man right here could probably write a book on the things he has done and seen around the world. Thank you for this it made my evening while at work on this snowy night here in NYC.

I've sailed past them when they were on the Atocha. It is halfway between the Dry Tortugas and the Marqueasa islands about 40 miles west of Key West. I was about 2 miles from them and a bunch of guys came up to the front of the boat and were watching me. When I saw the mail boxes off the back of the boat I changed course and gave them a wide berth. By the way I did mark the place for fun.

I have been to the PHI many times, and meet wonderful people from all over the world. I was living on a sailboat in Chicago, and friends said I should sail her to the PHI. I cannot imagine being so long with my "ars hangin in the wind" so to speak. Too many things can happen. I have great admiration for Phillip, and he is such a nice, humble guy. I could listen to these stories for hours. Salamat kaayo!

@@richardhowe5583 I lived on it during summers (May-Oct) for 4 years, and worked downtown as a Network Security Engineer. That is actually how I first came to the PHI, as they sent me to their office in Manila. Like these guys I fell in love with the PHI, and have gone back ever since. I no longer live on the boat, as the climate in the Midwest is not good for it, too much work for little time. Phillip has the perfect location now, although he paid quite a price for it. I wish him the very best in his life on "the hard stuff" (what sailors call land). Thanks Richard, I am sure you have great stories too. All the best!

@@davidbraun1936 thanks 😊..I bet you have some good stories about living on a boat in a big city in America..I bet you came in contact with thieves and harbor security and storms and freezing conditions and some girl stories..hehe..did the water freeze around your boat? Would the freezing water crush your boat? Thanks 😊
@davidbraun1936

@@richardhowe5583 In winter I had to get an apartment and put the boat on land (lots of work winterizing), or the ice would have crushed the boat. Yes, many stories on all fronts. "Cheap" harbors were right next to the most dangerous part of Chicago, which was bad. "Every man has a story" for sure. Now my goal is to retire to a quiet, safe, simple place and enjoy time with good friends.

Mark, you really pried out the good stuff from this interesting treasure hunter/adventurer, Phillip. I had a friend and adventurer (we did some together) who searched for the Lost Dutchman Mine, dredged for gold in the Snake River, held the world record for a Barracuda killed with a spear gun, and for good measure was suspended for flying a loop under a bridge (yes, FAA agents can read your aircraft ID number upside down ☺). His dad, a WWII and Korea Navy pilot and winner of two Navy Crosses, chewed his butt out for being so stupid. After his dad's death, he found a letter of reprimand for his dad and wingman flying under a bridge upside down.

I love the story of the Atocha and the 1715 fleet. I collect and hunt for shipwreck treasures. I plan on retiring in the Philippines in about 4 years or so and plan on diving for sunken treasures of the Manila Galleon trade. I hope to meet like minded folks with that sense of adventures.
