Idk what it is, but the more times I listen to this song the more it becomes my all time favorite SDRE song. Hear me out, I've listened to SDRE for many years now, but there is just something about this song that appeals to the current me instead of the high school me when I first found out about Sunny Day. This song really speaks to me and makes me feel for the band I grew to love over my years. They have definitely matured with age so to speak and even though this song might have been an idea years ago, it's not until now that the world gets to hear such amazing music and gets to experience how this song should have been. It's really refreshing to see an older and independent band collaborate with a more popular band even if it was only for a single song. I absolutely love Lipton Witch and it will forever go down in history as one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time.

@damesoumbi3 жыл бұрын
he said what? do you mean he wanted to keep going when they reformed or are you talking about their earlier breakups? and I wouldn't describe his voice on Diary as gutteral, it was more nasally and scratchy. I get what you mean by the screaming part, but that's not necessarily what gutteral means. if anything, he sounds more gutteral here with his more mature and deep voice.

My pleasure! If you want to check out their earlier demos, the band was originally called Chewbacca Kaboom. This was before they had Jeremy and Dan was the lead singer. They have about 7 demos on KZfaq. VERY rare. I''d recommend that as well. You can get an overall raw sense of where their signature sound developed from. Some of the riffs from the demos were used for their original songs, like Seven from the Diary album. It's so good to see people take interest in music from that scene enough to appreciate it. Cheers!

One of these days when you wake up and f.k.w. you decide to type in SDRE and....you're sucked into again just like back then. It's a sunny morning, kids are playing games in the living room, your love is next to you in bed reading a book and you just put the headphones on and want more and more and all these memories and feels come back and you proud flippin' proud that you were lucky to know this band your own little secret - maybe that's why they never made it big time - everyone wanted to know them for private devotions...like your little Diary - almost like the band predestined herself at the start with the title - something private. Or maybe World was too small to be full of beautiful but sad songs so we should not listen them. Anyway stumbled upon this song that I wasn't aware - thanks Hazim - recorded during the come back sessions that apparently just felt apart... style evolved and the feel is somehow different - like visiting an old friend who came to terms with most of the things now. Shouldn't have listen to the old songs - the friend has moved on, he's fine. Don't play those songs to your kids. Time to make a breakfast and whistle and hum Pharrell's Happy tune. The friend smiles for goodbye.

@MusicMikeThomas10 жыл бұрын
I would like to completely retract my previous comment; which was the first comment about this video when it had just been uploaded about a week ago. I have to say, at first I felt a little let down,partially because I was excepting a studio version of the "new" song played during the 2009 reunion shows,and maybe because I didn't initially feel drawn in by any initial melodic hook,I guess you could say. Well,now after a week of listening it has so grown on me and I absolutely love the song. When I was in the 10th or 11th grade,we were headed on some school trip, of course in a school bus Out of nowhere this kid I knew who was a kind of skater indie dude,came over to my seat to talk music because like him he had heard I was a musician. Anyway to make a long story short he said,"check these guys out", as he handed me one of those old yellow with rubber button sony sport cassette walkman and headphones. What I heard for the first time was the Sunny Day album Diary,which he let me listen to in full the remainder of the bus ride back. I was immediately blown away and went and bought the cd the first chance I had a few days later. Slightly over a year later or so I trekked almost an hour to this small underground indie store who carried a lot of sub pop stuff I was actually able to pick up SDRE LP2 on the exact day it was released,which was a big deal in pre-high speed internet 1995, when unless you lived in a major city all you pretty much had were mall chain stores like record town.Those stores for the most part and would never have an indie band's album on the day it was released let alone have it at all. Well as you guessed my ride back from the store was filled with the sounds of LP2 which I sort of felt a little indifferent about. I almost had the same feeling as when I first heard this new song. However,after a few weeks and a little added personal heartbreak LP2 would blow me away and become an even bigger record to me than Diary. It was slightly strange,and not as straight ahead and it showcased some odd time signatures and overall felt a little quirky to me at the time. But once I listen a few times I was hooked and I just wanted to share and say the same thing has been relived with this song. Initially I was feeling that it was just o.k. but after a week of many listens I absolutely think it is right up there and on par with any of the many great Sunny Day Real Estate songs! Sorry for the novel length comment,I love this band. I wish Jeremy would please release his new album! Who cares if he doesn't have a label. He should do a self release digital only thing for now and I'm sure once it is out there for a little while a label or distribution company will come along and maybe re-release it as a physical cd/vinyl product if that is one of the reasons for the hold up? I have trouble believing he is waiting for a label to make an offer just so that he can be backed by their marketing? Maybe on some level of course,but SDRE and Jeremy never really were a super marketed type of band,outside of Seattle, anyway. It was always loyal fans and more of a "you have to hear this",word of month thing no? Fingers are crossed for new Jeremy music to come out in the year 2014?

Its tough being a SDRE superfan at this point, going as far back as their days modeling for JCPenny's (correction: Nordstroms), so I'm guessing we are all just grateful to hear something new. It's a return to form and moderate progression in the promise showed during the Rising Tide era. I agree, the peaks are troughs compared to other one offs like the "Bucket of Chicken" track, now replaced by a more tired, articulate Frog Queen and Goldsmith's bombed out percussion and Hoerner's Les Paul aiming for the middle ground. Thanks for posting this!
@MusicMikeThomas10 жыл бұрын
It was Nordstroms not J.C. Penny and from what I remember they were slightly mislead and unaware that the photo shoot was going to a national add campaign also, labeling them as "emo". Or at least that is something along the lines of what I remember the band saying in an old interview.

Matthew Dove Unfortunately I wasn't able to pick one up yet,and they'll probably be sold out soon. I can't wait for Jeremy's next album. Its been like two years since I noticed his friend JoshMyers posted a Facebook picture of Jeremy playing guitar in the control room of some studio with a caption along the lines of ,"pre production on the new Jeremy Enigk album is sounding great". And then we get the," sorry for the lack of updates, I have no management or label", post by Jeremy? He should just put out the album himself, get it on iTunes and sell it through his website using the Lewis Hollow imprint or something? But I get it, he probably wants major distribution of a physical product as well, which can be tough to do on your own. My fingers are crossed that we will here news of a release sometime this year though. Do you go war back? Do you remember back in the day there were two fan sites back in the infancy of AOL dial up internet? One was run by John Despirito and the other by a guy named John London who later I believe actually befriended the band and became their webmaster for a time. I don't personally know either of them, I just remember being a young teenager and being so grateful that they had rare unreleased songs posted on their sites. Even though it was dial up,they were kick ass sites for back then circa 1996.. Today we take multi-media sites like that for granted. Anyways, long live SDRE!

OfficialMikeThomas I think I got the last names of the two web masters backwards as to who actually ran a site for the band. Oh well. its been a lot of years.

I remember the .fm extension one and inthebloom.com. Despirito is cool. Accessible, down to earth. I liked the art collective he started with Dan and its good to see he is still in the mix with them. Have you met any of the band? I had proposed writing a book about the process of making diary to W. Goldsmith and Jeremy awhile back, but nothing ever panned out. I have a hunch Mr. Enigk struggles with depression at times and this is why we see little insurgencies here and there of music. Just a theory. Anyway, that isn't meant to be a slam (quite the opposite to his creative life), but it simply says they are human and the most approachable, humble rockstars (with Brian Aubert from Silversun Pickups a close second) I've ever encountered. Good to chat with another diehard fan. You don't meet many of them these days.

Its growing on me, however Jeremy's voice is so much deeper. Sounds more like Hoerner now...:p

I'm a huge fan, I have everything SDRE and Jeremy has ever released as well as anything rare that is out there. I have to say,after a couple of listens, I am not as blown away as I thought I would be after waiting to hear the first new song in 14 years. I was really hoping to hear a studio version of the, "new" song played during the 2009 reunion tour. That song has some really good hooks. Don't get me wrong this song is o.k. but thats just it,Its o.k. To be honest it kind of reminds me of (minus the progy keyboard flourishes), one of those Rising Tide outtakes that the band dubbed not good enough to make that album. Just two cents from a super fan. I will listen to it a bunch more and see if its a grower.

Great band. I think their problem lately is too little direction, they should realize they were always a great band and this song proves they have the ability

Even if SDRE, never comes back, i really hope Hoerner gives music another chance. The other three guys will always be doing it, but he stopped for 8 years, completely...
