My topic is how Spanning Tree Protocol reacts to a link break and how to activate blocked port so that the network can continue to function. Port roles and port states are discussed too.

Also listening state will be waiting for frames that appears in its CAM table, if a frame with a mac address listed in the CAM table does not came to the port in those 15 seconds, that registry will be removed from the CAM table. This is done because those unused entries can be the cause of temporary loops. Great video as always, can't wait for the videos about 802.1w and 802.1s, thanks :D

Hello Sunny, Thank you for the videos they are very helpful. In 6:44 you have a topology, let's say that the link AB had a failure instead of AC. How would the switch B react? Will the switch wait 20 seconds before making any topology change? Will the Designated Port be elected Root Port after the 20 seconds without going into listening and learning states? Thank you for your help.

in your example, last Hello BPDU received by switch B from switch A will age out (30secs). At this point switch B will consider itself the root bridge and send BPDU to switch C. Switch C will wait up to 20 seconds for Hello BPDU from root bridge (switch A) and when received, transitions the blocking port to listening, then learning and finally forwarding. Switch C sends Hello BPDU from switch A during listening state, and switch B will make the designated port its root port.

What if link AC becomes active again? Can the blocked port receive the BPDU and then reassign the root port again? How does this happen as the blocked port drops BPDU frames?
