This is one of the largest encaustic paintings I've ever attempted, and so different from anything I've ever done before. I usually work small, in colors like white, black and brown. I'll add lots of colors sometimes, but always with ink, never with colored wax.
Well, I decided it was time to try a variety of colored wax and just one color of shellac burn, instead of the other way around.
It was really fun working in a larger format- I got to slap wax around, I used my blow torch instead of my heat gun, and I just loved watching all the colors blend together the way they did. I'm really pleased with this "sunset". What do you think?

Colors are, for me, the absolute key to an encaustic piece, whether it's a landscape or a shellac burn, layering is also key and fusing is a must! I make all my shellac colors, I have never had an issue with Jacquard inks!

Jacquard inks in shellac is that correct? Never thought of that.

that was super cool! can't wait to give this a try. I was ready to do a shellac burn but didn't think about layering more wax on top. Great idea!

Very nice! I’d bring the sunset into the water a little. Love the shellac! It’s freeing to do different things. I love your normal neutrals and abstract but this is cool.

Something you may want to Consider- in addition to all your horizontal brushstrokes, it’s nice sometimes to change direction to vertical. Afterwards finish up horizontally. Also try using an iron. I use one I got on Amazon without steam holes. It’s a lot of fun!

Good thought! Thanks! I don't try to do landscapes or anything similar very much, so tips are much appreciated!

What a fun piece. I think the only thing I would probably try to do is to bring out more of a curving movement in the water and someone highlight the sunsetting more. The color play was totaly fun, the closeups helped us to see what had happened in all your layers and that was very cool. I really liked the depths you acheived, especially in the water with all the layering.

Thanks for a great video. I appreciate the way you made it. The final shots showed the beautiful layering of your piece. The only thing I would change would be to maybe vary the blues in the water a bit; adding a bit of either other blues or some yellow or green in areas would create interest.

I am interested in what kind of shellac you use and how you get white/blonde shellac? Did you mix the color into regular shellac? I liked this piece overall, but the purples and oranges got a little muddy in places.

To get white, I use the palest shellac I can make, and use about 1/2 tsp. of dry pigment with 1/4 cup of shellac.

I use white dry pigment with the palest shellac I can mix myself. I use about 1/2 tsp. of dry pigment with 1/4 cup shellac so I don't dilute the shellac too much.

This was a dry process. I let the shellac dry on the surface, and then used my blowtorch on it.

I really like a lot of your work but encaustic is distinctly different and really takes trial and error. Colors could be blended more with each other and some tertiary colors added. The use of white and only white in the shellac gives the piece a sameness in color and cells that is boring. Sorry to be critical but you did ask.
