I am using the Benroe Geared head and love it. Ballheads are useless in my mind. I always have to use both hands, so not to drop the camera and doing some slight adjustments with a ballhead is nearly impossible. The geared head on the other side allows me to micro adjust to all 3 dimensions separately with great precision - with one hand.

Not long picked up the Benro geared head, absolutely love it. Made such a difference for me switching from a ball head, those micro-adjustments really help make it easier to get the composition just right! 👌🏻

Credible post, Ian! Type of head works very well for macro photography where small movements enable precise compositions. Foldable crank handles, a plus. BTW, congrats on 20K subs!

In answer to the commenter who wondered if this head “drooped” between adjustments: No, it’s rock solid and neither has or needs any locks. It stays where you put it. Really well made! Great review, Ian. A service.

I bought one of these heads earlier this year and absolutely love it. As for the position of the bubble level, I've never liked any of those little bubble levels on tripods and bought myself a 2 axis bubble level that slips into the camera's flash mount. I find it very convenient, easier to, use and more more accurate; it's a very inexpensive solution. Cheers.

I LOVE my geared head. I've been using one for years now. I could never go back to using something like a ball head. I do have a really small, light weight Gitzo ballhead but that only gets used when bag weight is my primary concern. I currently have the Benro geared head which was a big improvement on the Manfrotto geared head. Looks like I could save a couple of hundred grams with this head, but I think I'd need to try this one before spending the £260. Thanks for sharing Ian :-)

Hey Julian, hope you're well mate. Definitely helps with fine tuning. Like you mentioned, the ball head works better when weight saving is a must, like wild camping or long hikes 👍

Twice the price of the Benro geared head I use and at the price, the bubble level position you mention is really a big no no. Other than that, impressed with your channel Ian, certainly one of the better ones..

I think the Benro can carry twice the weight as a bonus.

I like my GH-PROII very much and appreciate your review and channel. A suggestion, meant to be constructive: Your set background is dark and busy and you placed the head in front of the darkest and busiest portion where it disappears. Don’t give up the otherwise nice background but maybe you could position subject equipment better. For example, you might have moved things around so the head was in front of the sliding wood door panel.

Nice tripod head Ian. I'm using a fluid head instead, the Manfrotto MVH500AH. It is a all-in-one for me, i can use it like a gimbal or for panorama and it does not drop my camera..pretty smooth operation. Thanks

I love my Benro GD3WH head. It has more levels than this one, all 3 adjustment knobs have fine tune & quick action abilities. Also it performs well in freezing & below freezing temperatures. I've had it out at -20f with no binding. At those temps my balls heads get sluggish and stiff. A geared head is definitely not for everyone but I love it.

Looks like a good bit of kit, I'm pretty interested in getting one of these. I'm guessing you don't get lens droop like with ball heads? Also would you still need a leveling base for panos where where you're tilted up/down? Cheers!

I have the same head as Ian, and liking it too. I dont get lens droop at all, but the heaviest lens I put on is a 24-70 (my 80-200 has its own tripod collar, so eventhough its heavier, the weight is distributed evenly). As for panos, it of course depends in which direction you want to do your pano. The head has two 'rotation planes'. One is at the base of the tripod, and one is just before attaching to your camera, if that makes sense. It is clearly visible at 5:17. So, you can use the tripod adjustments to level out the top plate, and use the rotation plane attached to your camera to do the pano. Still, afaik you want to rotate around the no parallax point ideally, so you would need something to 'offset' your camera attachment point from the tripod attachment to ensure the center of rotation is in line with the no parallax point, but I think that holds for all tripod heads. Btw, you might be interested in that sunway photo has a few products specifically for panorama photography.

Looks great. I sold a kidney and got an Arca Swiss D4. Miles better than a ballhead. Should last a lifetime .... just as well as I no longer have any spare organs ....

Hi Ian, Just received my new Sunwayfoto GH2 geared head. I notice that when I’m using the 55-200 on my xt4 there is noticeable lag in the viewfinder and the back of camera LCD when I rotate either knob. That is, when I have finished making an adjustment however small with one of the knobs, the image through the camera viewfinder, continues to move for a second or so till it settles at the new position. Is this just a lag thing with electronic viewfinders and mirrorless cameras. Does movement continue in the head after the knobs are turned? I don’t see it with the 10-24, (or it’s not obvious). It’s got me stumped......... UPDATE........I had ibis switched on. Once I disabled it...problem solved. Regards

You are supposed to level up BEFORE you attach your Camera!!

Says who?
@pixeldoc7119
@pixeldoc7119 2 жыл бұрын
@@ian_worth Says common sense. Please note: As you have already surmised, you will not see the leveling bubble once the camera is in place; ERGO, you level the head first. Also, for more accurate, but still not perfect leveling, use your in-camera level and then finally, if you need to be really accurate, level the image in Lightroom or Photoshop etc.
@tomheim9516
@tomheim9516 2 жыл бұрын
@@pixeldoc7119 Not always practical to level prior to mounting your camera. If you know you'll be shooting a pano in advance of setup, your point is perfectly valid. However, I can't count the number of times I have set up for something other than a pano (ie, the first composition dictates something other than level), then desired a pano at the tail end. For this I would have to take the camera off the head, level the head, then put it back on. A real pain. If the level were to be located somewhere else (so it's visible when the camera is mounted), then this issue goes away. Leveling each photo in post is not optimal when stitching panos (unless you allow your pano software to warp one or more images). I prefer to avoid warping as it degrades sharpness.
