What basic SUP safety equipment should you consider before taking to the water? Read full post here : www.supboardermag.com/2021/04...
Whether you're going for a quick paddle with mates, or a longer solo SUP adventure Lucy gets you thinking about some of the other equipment you should consider taking with you, to help keep you safe when afloat. It's tempting to just grab your board and paddle and go. But your paddling situation can quickly change, and you can easily find yourself in the water when you're least expecting to, or needing to call for help in an emergency. So make sure you're prepared, and think about your SUP safety BEFORE you get afloat.

A paddle that converts to a kayak paddle is something I always bring. It makes currents and wind a million times easier to deal with. You can go much faster too.

That's a great tip for those paddling where wind or current are. Thanks for the comment. Beau

On more than 50% of drowning, victims did not wear a PFD. Unless you are doing Yoga on your board, I would highly suggest to wear your PFD in any situations. Even when you are doing your Yoga, you should anchor your SUP and have a PFD under your bungees, on the board. And, maybe the most important part: don't go on the water alone! I'm a whitewater rescue instructor and a whitewater kayak instructor from Canada. Thanks for the safety video!

Great tips for all SUP beginners (and also for some more experienced paddlers) for keeping safe (and therefore keeping it fun) out on the water. Thanks guys!

Useful intro to SUP paddling gear. I would make two 'observations' though. Firstly, if you are taking your phone on the water as your primary means of communication, wear it around your neck and tuck it inside your pfd or in a pocket of your pfd. If there is an emergency and you are separated from your board, there is no point having your principle means of calling for help floating downwind/tide/stream at a rate of knots! Secondly, bungee has little or no real strength (unless you buy dyneema shock cord). If you want to ensure that what you stow under your bungees remains with the board in the event of a capsize (yes, SUPs can capsize. I've even seen people paddling them upside down after being tumbled in the surf.) tie them to the bungee attachment points with loops of strong cord. Keep up the good work at SUPboarder Towers!

Hey Alistair . Yes you are very right. Keeping your phone on your person is the best option. Also good comment about the bungee cord. 👍🏼

One thing i take with me when I'm out paddling is a small air horn. Much louder than a whistle. Picked mine up at my local Wal-Mart for $6.

I noticed the saftey tether was in some clips were worn near the knee instead of ankle. Which is the recommended use?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag Жыл бұрын
Depends on the paddling you are doing. We recommend ankle leashes in the surf, calf or quick release belt / leashes when paddling flat calm water, and quick release belts / leashes in moving water.

WRONG......tether is a bad bad idea in some rivers with Trees and obstacles under the surface or LOW water areas.....it goes against common sense, period.

You can’t swim in rain coat and pants .

No you can't. But hopefully with the leash, you're not too far away from the board to climb back on quickly.

I disagree with the leash thing. Its really unnecessary unless youre swimming on moving water like a river or sea. For stationary waters like lakes its just a burden unless you cant swimm - in which case you probably shouldnt consider water sports. Even if you do fall in its easy to catch up to your board on a lake. I never use that thing for other things than hauling the board behind me when Im up for a swimm. Other than that its just a waste of space.

Wrong if you fall in the water for any reason in case of strong wind you will loose your board in a second (a strong raffic can lift your board and throw it very far) and remain in the water without nothing....leash is literally the most important thing. You wear the leash because of wind not because water currents, an isup is also much more dangerous in case of strong wind it can fly away in a second....

@@Alesxandros intertesting point although... Never seen a wind that could actually lift the board. I imagine this could happen maybe starting at 6 beufort scale - at which point you dont even wanna boardpaddling anyway (unless youre a masohist who enjoys fighting with opposite wind and big waves, or youre actually using isups for surfing at sea or ocean - then, as I stated, a leash is usefull). For most people board paddling is ideal at 1-3 beufort scale - for this leash is nothing but burden (unless you're hauling with it)

@@szymongrabarczyk3561 sea and winds and nature is always unpredictable....i worked as a lifeguard and in summer i ve seen alot of episodes..... Off shore wind is especially dangerous with every kind of inflatable, many people drown trying to reach their inflatable pushed away from the wind (exaustion), i ve seen people risking their life trying to to grab the ball pushed away by wind...imagine a sup Always wear a leash, i'm also a sup instructor btw

@@Alesxandros Well thats obvious. Thats why I wrote "unless your at a riber or a SEA". I was actually one of these people who tried to recover a ball for some kid and I almost exhaust myself cause the waves pushed me off the shore. On small to medium lakes thats not a problem. Ive been doing this couple of seasons on like 15 different lakes and never used a leash nor I intend to do so in the future (unless its a windy sea, ocean or a river). Nor will I ever use a life jacket on a freaking flotation device (which is isup). This is beyond precaution - this is treating yourself like a handicapped child.

@@szymongrabarczyk3561 it depends wich lake you are....if you come in italy in garda lake weather can change in a second and you can be in danger....also fainting or related issues can kill you easily kill people...whatever, do what you want. I'm a surfer, sup instructor and ex lifeguard ....feel free to do your own way man 🤙. It's not my problem honestly
