Owing to Paramount Pictures objecting to me using a few seconds from the trailer in my original upload of this review - which showed the train crash sequence as I was briefly talking about it and was actually being screened on real Super 8 film for illustrative purposes - I have re-worked that sequence of this review and re-uploaded it with a couple of minor modifications.
This is J.J. Abrams classic adventure with a science fiction twist from 2011 reviewed on 4K with a look at the trailer release on Super 8 too.
Screen ratio is 2.40:1 and sound is Dolby TrueHD 7.1

Wow this is a blast from the past John. Isn't it amazing how differently you can feel about a certain 4K transfer once you see it under different circumstances and for your case new equipment. As a matter of fact I really need to check this one out for myself on my new setup and see how I feel about it today. I don't think that's Steelbook will ever get boring. Not a thing has changed when it comes to your videos. You were brilliant then and you still are today. All the best to you and Susie

Evening Keith. I haven't had a chance to watch your latest video yet but I expect I'll get to it tomorrow, probably while enjoying lunch. This disc does look more impressive now than it did about three years ago but I do think I really need a bigger screen to be able to discern which releases are better than others now because they're all looking so good. I was thinking about 24 feet and we just happen to have a 'Scope screen that width packed away in the house. We'll need a bigger house to put it up in though! Say hello to Ellen and make sure you both behave yourselves. John.

Hi John I picked up the steel book 4K/blu-ray last year in of all places in a second hand shop. Although I had already got the blu-ray, I just had to buy it as the steel book, it looks great. I was fortunate to also have the Super8 Scope trailer as well. I did run the 35mm print at the cinema when it came out. Weeks before we closed I was hoping the film distributor would forget we had it. Sadly they remembered, so had to send it back, drat. I liked the film and agree about watching the sound level of the train crash, I have to back the volume off on our home amp at that part, thanks for the review.

It would have been very nice to have a Super 8 release of this one Graham but the market had gone by the time this film was released. Such a shame because it led to that new Super 8 camera but that hasn't exactly turned out as first conceived so I don't know if it's going to drive a resurgence in the gauge now. Such a shame but where there's life, there's hope. Well done for finding the steelbook in a second hand shop. It's amazing what can turn up sometimes. John.

I feel a bit mixed about this movie. It tries it best to recreate Spielberg magic of the 75-93 era. But it doesn't reach the finish line.

It's similar though but different. I prefer it to the Spielberg films even though I love Close Encounters and E.T.. It's the Super 8 theme running through Super 8 and the child actors that tip the balance. The science fiction element isn't as good as the two Spielberg films but the characters and that wonderful little film gauge make it one of my all-time favourite films. I'd like a 35mm print but I'd actually prefer a Super print of this one. John.

@@spaceodds1985 You both need to get a Super 8 projector to fully understand the attraction. Then again, a time machine would probably be better so you can go back and re-live those days and make your own home movies with your friends and family. That was a big part of my life and J.J. Abrams too. Hopefully I got that across in the video as a big reason why I like this film so much.

Love your professional grade reviews without getting too technical. I have Rio Bravo ordered from Amazon. Hopefully, in supporting this, many more John Wayne films will become available in Ultra HD 4k as I am a huge fan of John Wayne and his films. Especially would like to see THE SEARCHERS upgraded to the new format.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
The Searchers was VistaVision Daniel so I probably don't need to tell you the exquisite quality of the original negative. More than twice the area of full frame 35mm so to equate that to computer terminology would probably be an estimate of 8K at least. 4K won't really do it full justice but good enough for home use for sure. John.

Hi John, I love this movie also, has an 80’s feel, is your 2001 space a space odyssey (Italian) dts hd? on the back it says mono? I’m thinking of buying this version, loving the uploads by the way!! do you ever watch movies like Jason and the Argonauts etc on the big screen, I truly love them but they don’t stand up to well when viewed big, will you go to the BFI IMAX to watch the new Alien Romulus? thanks…
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
2001 is 5.1 for sure Chase so don't worry about that. Unfortunately my Italian release of the film has got the 4K fault and it's probably the worst example of the fault I've come across so far. It looks to be the same disc as the rest of the world but I've had to replace it. Got the replacement from HMV for a tenner though so it wasn't that bad. I have the battle with Talos extract from Jason and the Argonauts on Super 8 and it's fantatstic on a big screen so it's possible the video versions are not standing up as well as a film version. I don't have the feature prints but they were renowned as not being as good as the Talos extract so I expect the Talos section was in better condition than the rest of the film or simply gave a better impression owing to the nature of that part of the shoot. You can tell when the live action and Dynamation have been optically merged together though but the bigger the screen the less that stands out. I usually only go to the IMAX to see IMAX films but I did see Gravity (terrible quality) and Rogue One (15/70 blow-up and therefore not very good quality) there. I've not been able to get the time to go and see the 15/70 blow-up of Dune Part Two but still hope to in the future as they're bound to stick it on occasionally for a while yet. Alien Romulus is not an IMAX film as far as I know. Maybe a 15/65 section has been shot but if not there's no point in a cinema visit so I'll watch it at home assuming I decide it looks good enough to warrant seeing. The last two haven't exactly been brilliant so I'm a little on the fence about it. John.

Whoa! I wish I was there tonight Chase. Hans Zimmer is one of the most talented film score composers and you only have to look at the volume of work he gets to see that so many film makers want to use him. The INTERSTELLAR score is fabulous. It was recorded in Temple church just over the north side of the Thames from the BFI IMAX. Assuming I am recollecting correctly, he used the in-house organ and also brought in an orchestra. John.

personally I wish they had used the art thats on the back of the steelbook for the cover art as opposed to the "end-game-marvel-esk" floating head style work on the front. My copy does have a steelbook slipcover however that does use that rear art of the book itself on the front which I do like
@moviecollector5920

I think the cover is based on one of the original poster arts. The rear is nice but a little ordinary and more like a modern film whereas the throwback nature of this film necessitates poster art of old. I think it's my favourite steelbook except for the ordinary disc faces. John.

Fantastic material. I love Super 8 Dear John, question about the projector: Optoma UHD550X have a better DLP chip of 0.67DMD compared to UHZ50 which have 0.47DMD Have you noticed improved black levels and contrast on the UHD550X ? The UHZ50 is definitely brighter and has more image pop. But blacks should be better on the UHD550X sharpness should also be better on UHD550X, its native resolution is 2716 × 1600 and shifting pixels only 2x Where on 0.47 which has 1920x1080 shifting pixels up to 4x what are your conclusions? after comparing these projectors? Due to the greater brightness, the image pop will be better UHZ50. But what about black?
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
Brightness does spoil things sometimes but fortunately there is an option to put the output from the laser down as low as 50% and that can make a tremendous difference with some discs. The UHD550X is an excellent projector but a bit lacking in contrast capabilities compared to the UHZ50. Both are extremely sharp but the UHZ50 appears to reproduce more accurate colours. That could be down to what we get used to of course but I do think I'm able to get even more natural, filmic looking imagery from the newer, smaller video projector than the larger one. I wouldn't have purchased the UHZ50 if it hadn't have been for how we had to locate the projector given what we decided on for the new home cinema design layout. It saved a lot of money doing it the way we did in the end. The conclusion is that either projector should astound you. I would think that anyone who gave either a try would wonder why they've been messing around with tellies for so long. But I think that's largely because most think there is more to it than just the projector but all that's really required is a white wall to put the projected image onto and then you have a cinema. John.

Hi John1 Yes I do like this film and with this it's time for a rewatch as I do have it on blu ray! This steelbook does look great dang it 's tempting to double dip on it. That packaging observation brings up a sore spot it was with my 4k The Others from Criterion. (an expensive christmas gift from the kids to boot) was glitching when I watched it. I guess the blu ray underneath the 4k was loose in the shipping and scratched the 4k. At first I thought it was a smudge and reached out to Trevor for some cleaning tips but in the end it was a scratch. Not everyone likes Super 8 but I think that's down to a misunderstanding of its raison d'etre which is because of J.J. Abrams childhood making films on Super 8. The science fiction element is a means to an end, that's all. I think it all works well but it's the children and their interaction that makes it. They're all so damned good and that's unusual because normally children in films drive me up the wall. There's none of the stupid smart-Alec quips from the youngsters in this one, just impressive acting and a lot of fun. I haven't been re-watching anything much to see how it looks on the newer projector but we have been re-watching quite a few 4K discs to check for what I call the 4K fault. So far we've only come across one or two so that's a big relief. I had started think there was a major problem with the format. John.

That was simply under cranking the camera so the action would look faster Kevin. Because of the PAL 25 frames per second video format those sequences looked even more ridiculous as they were sped up just that little bit extra for television and video. My favourite Bond films are probably The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill but thankfully by then the under cranking method had long been abandoned. I'm finding I don't much care for many of the early Bond films other than On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Thunderball. @@MadMartysMovieReviews-gv6hk On our Optoma UHD550X I could hardly perceive the difference between the Blu-ray and the 4K Marty and I think that proves the point I'm always making that all our equipment is different. Even on the UHZ50 I can't discern a difference in definition between the two but I believe Super 8 was only a 2K video master file for cinemas so that might explain that side of it. All that effort to shoot 35mm and the dailies were only transferred at 2K. The same abomination was done to Last Night In Soho. What is wrong with the people running the film industry? It should have been finished on film but I don't suppose there are enough people left who know how to do that. Perhaps the lady who assembled OPPENHEIMER in standard 65mm and 15/65 (plus a bit of 16mm) winning the USA Academy Award will re-educate the industry and they'll realize how stupid they've been... but probably not. @moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 4 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure there never was a finished negative and that's the problem. As each shot was developed it was then transferred by scan and only ever edited in a computer. This appears to be how all films are done now which is a money saving exercise. Every movie shot on film should be finished on film as so successfully proven recently by Christopher Nolan with OPPENHEIMER. To make SUPER 8 look as good as it always should have done would require someone with the film editing capability (probably rare now owing to the bad decision making within the film industry) and assemble every relevant scene down to the exact frame using the original shots in camera negative form. It's never going to happen so the 2K upscale will be as good as it ever gets. It looks good enough on Super 8 though but that's around HD quality so a suitable video to cine transfer. John.

@@quatz1981 It's odd the way some comments just disappear. I've checked in the 'held for review' section and there's nothing in there so it's simply gone off into the ether. So many recent films have been permanently buggered up because there is no longer the ability to both shoot and finish on film. It's the same with everything nowadays because the wrong people are running just about all big business and the end result tends to be that the staff lose interest in what they're doing. You can only bang your head against the wall so often. John.

I remember you mentioning Super8 on a previous video and by your highlighting it I almost watched it the other night, but swayed towards a more adult/violent film and ended up switching it out last second for 2012's "Looper" instead... Which turned out to be a pretty good story and I liked the future setting, probably the most realistic view of the future i've seen depicted in a movie. Super8 is still on my radar though! Folks, am I the only one that is put off by PG and 12 rated movies? Its a completely stupid stance and view I know, but part of my brain just thinks, "ahhh 12? that's a kids movie, what can I get from that". Yet I know classics like Ghostbusters, Jaws, LOTR, Jurassic Park etc are rated 12 or lower and I don't have a problem with them... But I grew up with them. I've probably missed out on some pretty great movies in recent years for being so close minded. By the look of things, Keith at Euphoria has an impressive toy collection! I quite fancy a couple variations of the "toymaker" made Hellraiser Puzzle boxes myself, but they are priced at £239 now (plus import tax from Europe, so an extra £50) - I should have bought one couple years back when we were still in the EU, they were £130-150!. I don't grudge the maker on the cost, its the the rapid inflation and import tax I dislike! Anyway, thanks for the video, I hope things in life are well in general and with KZfaq not too stressful with these copyright strikes/claims.

I think I've only had three complaints about showing trailer extracts but I don't tend to use them now unless I've got written permission. It's a shame because it's a good way of 'selling' the movie to anyone watching and interested in the review. I don't tend to look at certifications on films so I'd never thought about it until now Bob. I like all types of films and very much enjoy movies aimed at children other than computer generated cartoons which generate practically zero interest in me. Super 8 is one of my favourite films but I do have a lot of 'favourite' films. It strikes a chord for me though owing to the Super 8 theme throughout the entire film which as been a familar part of my life for all of my life back as far as I can remember. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Agreed. It is very strange that a studio (or their subcontracted minions) would strike/complain/claim a video that is precisely doing the job of recommending their product... In turn generating them revenue from a purchase. Years back, fair enough people were uploading entire movies to the platform, but a snippet of a trailer... Its a bit cheeky of them. Enjoy your weekend!

@@suavebob I'd reached the point where I presumed a promotional trailer extract would be acceptable in a KZfaq video promoting their product but alas not. It is their copyright so it's up to them but when you look at some of the videos others upload that are chock full of clips from feature films it does seem a little odd. I had more or less the same thing with my review of the 4K of Jaws where I used the trailer on Super 8 to illustrate how the anamorphic filming process worked. That video was very popular though so I decided to leave it and Universal could have the £10 (or thereabouts) per year advertising revenue from it. A shame though because a lot of time went into that video. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I think Steven Spielberg has a personal grudge against you John 😲 😛 Especially if others creators are getting away with more, its like being back in a school yard being picked on by a big bad bully. I didn't realise the revenue was so low from videos and as you mentioned, that's one of your popular videos. I took voluntary redundancy from work recently to get a nice pay-out and was actually considering attempting something on KZfaq (not entirely settled on what), but I think i'll scrap that idea. That being said, redundancy money now burning a hole in my pocket and I am considering a new TV as my poor existing 65" LG OLED has quite a bit of burn in, which to be fair is my own fault for running it through a PC around 16 hours per day for the past 24 months, with it now picking up outlines of some of the static images - particularly shows bad when solid orange colours are on the screen.

@@suavebob I haven't kept up with how many views that old Jaws review video gets but the basic summary is that one thousand views averages to about £2.50. Sometimes it's a little more and sometimes it's somewhat less. These videos only tend to generate views when they're first uploaded so unless they're something considered very special then it's a waste of time in monetary terms. I couldn't find this information out anywhere when I was considering starting the channel and in fact the information I did find was completely wrong but a small income was not the main consideration. The BFCC was the big thing and with that resurrected and leading onto greater things I feel it's pretty much mission accomplished.
