Background of the game (from Wikipedia):
Super Bowl III was the third AFL-NFL Championship Game in professional American football, and the first to officially bear the name "Super Bowl".[6] The game, played on January 12, 1969, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, is regarded as one of the greatest upsets in American sports history.[7] The heavy underdog American Football League (AFL) champion New York Jets defeated the National Football League (NFL) champion Baltimore Colts by a score of 16-7.
This was the first Super Bowl victory for the AFL. Before the start of the game, most sports writers and fans believed that AFL teams were less talented than NFL clubs, and expected the Colts to defeat the Jets by a wide margin. Baltimore posted a 13-1 record during the 1968 NFL season before defeating the Cleveland Browns, 34-0, in the 1968 NFL Championship Game. The Jets finished the 1968 AFL season at 11-3, and defeated the Oakland Raiders, 27-23, in the 1968 AFL Championship Game.
Undaunted, Jets quarterback Joe Namath made an appearance three days before the Super Bowl at the Miami Touchdown Club and brashly guaranteed a victory. His team backed up his words by controlling most of the game, building a 16-0 lead by the fourth quarter off of a touchdown run by Matt Snell and three field goals by Jim Turner. Colts quarterback Earl Morrall threw three interceptions before being replaced by Johnny Unitas, who then led Baltimore to its only touchdown during the last few minutes of the game. With the victory. the Jets remain the only winning Super Bowl team to only score one touchdown (either offensive, defensive, or special teams). Namath, who completed 17 out of 28 passes for 206 yards, was named as the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player, despite not throwing a touchdown pass in the game or any passes at all in the fourth quarter.

This....means the world to me. Been watching highlights on SB3 since a kid (I'm 33 now). THIS was the game my father always spoke about,how Joe was his hero. How much of an impact it had on him...years later I'd realize it more so,because my dad was 13-14 when the jets won...recently they finally showed the actual game on NFL network and I was so happy to watch. NFL Films speed is one thing,the actual game another. My father just died three weeks ago. So for me to see this,kind of soothes me. It helps me reminisce and reconnect with my father. So I'm writing this with tears of joy,cause it feels like they won the game today,just now as I'm watching it. Thanks. This brought some tears but also a few smiles to my face.

Why in blue blazes didn't Baltimore try for a field goal on that 4th and 5, making it 16 to 10, and the Colts got the ball back. Don Shula really goofed on that one!

John Mackey deserves a lot more credit. Of all the tight ends that era John Mackey was like trying to tackle a house on a diesel engine. Look at that first BALT play. He gets the ball and breaks 3 tackles and it looks like two of them get it really bad in the head.

The Colts had their chances. So many turn overs by Baltimore. (INT/FUMBLES) Missed FG's too. Kicked themselves in the foot. Missed that WR wide open down the sideline. #41, RB of the Colts played great. Snell should have been MVP. Great highlights, thanks! Coach Chuck Noll was an assistant for the Colts, next stop... AS a non-American I've learned about American football thanks to the video games, it was the only way to learn about NFL back in past, now thanks to the globalization and the Internet the NFL is in every place you could imagine. However is a nice sport and i could say i am a JETS Fan , but I don't understand why is so popular in United States and is getting popular around the world. Watching a game in the present is hard to be enjoyable in my opinion. Too much commercial ads, and you see a lot of times different rulings under the same circumstances seems like it is based in which team are they ruling for. After watching this game and the way they use play now i understand why is such a great sport, too bad in the present the matches don't look like that.

The Colts should have kicked a field goal on 4th down from the 19 yardline. It would have been a 26-yard attempt, and it would have cut the lead to 16-10. And there was still time enough to get the ball back and try for a go-ahead touchdown, with or without another onside kick. There was still 2:44 left to play on that 4th down. I think that the Jets still probably would have won by a score of 16-10, but it certainly would have made the final 2:44 of the game a lot more interesting.

Reading a book about the 1968 Jets and this game. A number of Jets, including several assistant coaches, did not have much respect for the Colts, whom they considered slow, somewhat old and predictable. They also felt Oakland, whom the Jets beat in Super Bowl III, was a better team, and that other AFL squads, such as San Diego and Kansas City, had better players at certain positions.
@smitskee
@smitskee 2 жыл бұрын
It’s odd, because Bill Arnspager and Chuck Noll ran the Colt defense. Despite the high praise in 68, it was said during that season, the one weakness was they lacked speed. Tom Landry acknowledge this, but praised Shula for his defense being smart, and being in the right place at the right time. Joe Namath, was well publicized for his arm and quick release. Many AFL defenders, also talked about his quickness in the pocket, and his quick reads. In short, you could sack Joe, but it wasn’t easy. Joe also took a deeper drop, because his quickness gave him that luxury. In SB3, it seemed like the Colts took none of this into consideration.
@gregford2103
@gregford2103 2 жыл бұрын
Shula's teams at Baltimore and Miami were very disciplined, and at the latter he also had more quickness and talent on the defensive side. Noll and his staff arguably had the best collection of defensive talent in the history of the NFL. The Jets also developed an offensive strategy based on the Colts' only two losses during the 1967 and 1968 seasons, which were to the Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns. The Rams' Roman Gabriel called a lot of the plays at the line of scrimmage, something Namath emulated in the Super Bowl. The Browns attacked the Colts' right side of the defense using Leroy Kelly, and that is where the Jets sent Matt Snell and Emerson Boozer quite a bit.
@smitskee
@smitskee 2 жыл бұрын
@@gregford2103 I never knew that about Roman Gabriel, in a game against the Colts. I just figured Weeb learned from the master of offensive line calls, and audible attack, when he was the coach of John Unitas. John Mackey once said, Unitas taught you offense and concentration, as he would sometimes change a play 4 times at the line of scrimmage. Weeb had a strategy for SB3. It was to play not to lose. He had a talent like Joe Namath, but he wasn’t going to let Joe put the ball in the air 40-50 times. Weeb had relationships with former NFL colleagues Coach Collier, and Coach Allen. Both the Rams and the Browns had success running against the Colts in 68. The Rams lost, but had a player over 100 yards rushing, and Leroy Kelly did as well, in the Colts only loss. The Colts for the season average, held teams under 100 yards rushing. Weeb indeed picked their brains. The Colts later praised Winston Hill, as Hill dominated the Jet weak side. Talimini, and Boozer were also a factor. The Jets ran the ball, mixed in the pass, controlled the clock, had the time of possession, shortened the game. Snell, Boozer, and Sauer always tried to hit the ground before going out of bounds. Keep the clock moving. Add in all the Colt fuck-ups, Jets win.

@@smitskee, Namath's attempting fewer passes, in large part,was what elevated his play throughout that year, so that wasn't likely to have changed against the Colts, regardless of the strengths of the latter's defense.

I don’t think this game looked like it was rigged like Bubba Smith said, but not throwing to Orr is really suspect. Also, Morral’s 2nd INT looked suspect as well. Supposedly, Matte was in a good mood and partying after the game. Why? His fumble was a big reason they lost. I was expecting to see smoking guns, but the reality is there isn’t any. If it was rigged, it was very subtle.

Bubba Smith said the game was rigged through earl moral the QB who threw 3 it's in the 1st half 2 in the red zone. He looked straight at the WR he was throwing to as soon as the ball was hiked. 71 yes 3ints Joe Namath guaranteed a victory something no team sport athlete has ever predicted or boasted. The only reason Joe got into the HOF was because of this game. With QB rating of 64 he shouldn't have even been considered or been a selection.the colts was in the red zone 5 times in the 1st half and scored 0 points something is definitely wrong with this picture. .

You wonder if that edition of the Colts couldn't stand the heat of the Super Bowl pressure, because as bad as they were in Super Bowl III, it can be legitimately argued that they played even worse in Super Bowl V, when they committed seven turnovers, yet they still won because, as bad as the Colts played in Super Bowl V, the Cowboys, remarkably, played even WORSE. The difference between their results in Super Bowls III and V came down to the fact that, in Super Bowl III, they played against a team (and especially a QB) that didn't fold under pressure, while the Cowboy team they beat (or better put, beat themselves worse than the Colts did) had not yet mastered the ability of playing under pressure in the same way they would later in the 70s.

@@VMan29397 Tom Matte is the only person associated with the game that says that. The film footage available, doesn’t back it up. Matte is near the hash marks on the Jet side of the field when he does the lateral pass throw back to Morrall. Orr, is streaking down the hash marks on the Colt side. Morrall is near those hash marks looking straight up field, but then pivots right to throw to Hill. The film footage of Orr flapping his arms shows only fans behind him. If the band was in the upper left hand corner of the end zone, so what? That’s not where Orr was, according to the camera angles, and where Morrall was looking to release the ball. Earl didn’t see him? You heard Johnny Sample. No Jet was near him. Earl lost concentration or something. His fuck-up.
