In my previous video I only tested how Picture Control settings affected JPEG files, now I also show the effect on RAW files and how to process them to get the cleanest results with different types of software like DXO PureRAW and Nikon NX Studio. At the end I show how to dig into these settings on your camera.

I gave some thought about changing my Nikon Z9's Picture Controls after watching your video. However, I could not understand why my NEF files looked great a month ago and suddenly looked like crap. I was online with Adobe today complaining about my Z9 NEF files being desaturated and noisy. The technician had me rollback the LRC version to 13. I then compared images to those in Capture One Pro. I am happy to report that the photos were equally as good. Frankly, this journey was driving me crazy. I had recalibrated my camera and 4K monitor and tried different lenses. I was ready to sell all our Nikon gear and replace it with either Sony or Leica. In fact, I went to our local camera shop and picked up a Sony A7R V and a 200-600 lens. Files looked good. Reality check - I decided to return the Sony gear. I retained our 7- month old Nikon gear and purchased the 600 f/6.3 PF lens. I purchased a Capture One Pro subscription and imported my Z9 files. The files looked good straight out of camera. Now, I can either stay with Capture One Pro or use our normal Adobe workflow, hoping that Adobe tests their software more thoroughly before they release it. JP Reply

DxO's results are amazing, I haven't touched Topaz DeNoise since I got PureRaw. You mention a 2 minute processing time - are you on an older Intel Mac? My entry level M1 Mac Mini flies through DxO processing. I wonder if the Z9's RAW format / compression slows it down (in addition to the larger 45 mp file).

Am using 14 inch M1 Pro. Not sure if it’s literally 2 minutes, it’s what DXO mentioned in the little “bar” at the bottom during processing and it seemed about right.

Unfortunately yes. It has been slow since forever. Apparently there is no incentive for Nikon to improve their software but you never know... (;

Is the Z9 sensor BSI? I haven't been able to confirm that.

is this setting just for high iso images? What if you were in studio at base iso 64 or even iso 100, would you still need these settings or would you want a different mix of settings at base iso? Can you also test at base iso? What settings are best for base iso, factory default or different? Thanks

The effect of these settings are most noticeable at ISO 6400 and above when the camera starts to get noticeably more noisy. That said images will look smoother at pretty much any ISO with these settings because there will be less artifacting visible. You might want to adjust the basic sharpening and the mid-range sharpening just a bit for lower ISO's as images may come out looking a bit too "smooth" for your liking but it can also be exactly what you need if you want very smooth looking skint tones straight out of the camera.

So if you make these changes in camera to to sharpening, mid-range sharpening, and clarity, what does Lightroom or DXO do with them? I wasn't clear from your explanation. OR if we were take an image in NX Studio, make your adjustments, and Save it (not export it), creating an XMP file, and import that into Lightroom or DXO, what happens then? Is the interpretation of these different, other than these programs just applying their usual choices. So for example, if this get's translated to Lightroom just reducing a value of 40 to 35 under its slider, I am not sure we have gotten anywhere with RAW. You can apply these settings to many files easily in NXStudio, but if there is no real change in the application by other other programs, I am not seeing how changing the in camera settings helps?

DXO takes the file "as is" regardless of camera settings. Lightroom interprets the file with the camera settings including any sharpening settings. Changing camera settings helps if you want to import directly into LR for example, or if you want to shoot JPEGs.

@@deovid Lightroom has lots of choices but my point is that the Nikon Picture Control settings don't translate to Lightroom like they do in NX Studio. I assume the same for DXO. AND you can change the sharping settings in NX Studio for one or many images quite quickly. So while changing Picture Control helps greatly for JPG, I don't see how it helps in RAW no matter what editor is being used. The only benefit I see is to the embedded jpg if that is what is going to be used to evaluate images, but then again can't rely on that much unless only using NX Studio.

@@barkingbeanscoffee If you have settings you already know you want you can set those in camera and LR will import them as is so then you don't have to adjust for ex. sharpening or contrast in post but you do have the dynamic range that RAW offers vs JPEG and the flexibility to change WB etc.

I tried using nikon NX on my entry level D3200 and it resulted in terrible images. Has the software improved since then?
@deovid

Nikon NX generally will offer the best quality since Nikon itself knows best how to interpret its own camera data. I find photos processed with NX look the most pleasing, have the most accurate color and the most detail but it's still a bit slow and cumbersome software unfortunately so in practice it's easier to use Lightroom.

@@deovid thanks for the reply! I read somewhere capture one handles Z9 files better, but I've yet to run a Z9 file through it. I've had the auto edit generate some good images with my Z6II, but anytime i tried using C1 to add my personal style to a picture, i wasn't happy with the results. I do admit i haven't done as much 'homework' with that software as i should/could.

Just a friendly suggestion, sounds like the mic would be better a little closer and with a pop filter.

I’ve always thought this about NX…first got it with my D2X,back in the day I think…anyways,it’s virtually unusable for anything but the ‘hero’ shot,which is a shame…it kinda pre-Lightroomed lightroom.But it’s DEATHLY S L O W…..

NX is unfortunately quite cumbersome and their seems to be little improvement going on but it does deliver excellent quality
