A quirky cardboard "Life size" accessory Lionel offered between 1958 and 1960. It sold for 5.95 and provided a real life railroad experience to young children. Adding one to your collection or train room would be fun. Part of the Rare, Unusual and Oddball Lionel Postwar toy trains highlighted on this channel. Lionel Model trains Thanks. Brian

So awesome to see a new one put together like it would have been 65 years ago. Step 6 with the clock on top - instructions look like the sides would fold back.

Yeah, I thought so too, but they slip over the top of the station and it lays back just a bit because of it. I will look at it again, but it does not have any score marks for bends. B

I’m pretty sure most kids would rather get more track, freight cars accessories etc. than a cardboard box! I doubt these sold well at $40. I also suspect they got destroyed pretty quickly. lol. All the same, not everything has to be a winner! Thanks for another great presentation of toy train history.

My pleasure. NO doubt, if I was a kid would have wanted another piece of rolling stock or a trackside accessory. So, I do feel these were not big sellers. They were probably shown in the 1960 Catalog to move remaining unsold stock. Thanks for the support. Brian

Thanks again for sharing, Brian. This really was something that is very unique. It is always surprising to see that some of these actually survived, since it probably was not big seller based on the moisture damage.

Yeah, these are a really neat accessory. They were expensive for being a cardboard structure and once opened would not have been saved for long once played with. They are not really rare, so keep an eye out and add one to your collection for the fun of it! Thanks. Brian

Now that's a cool Lionel accessory I had NO idea ever existed! See, it's a wasted day if you don't learn something new! In an odd way it reminds me of a toy I had around 1961 when I was eight years old. It was a cardboard Mercury space capsule that a kid could fit inside when it was assembled. Man, I had a LOT of fun with that thing! There was a cardboard space helmet that came with it, VERY uncomfortable to wear but that didn't matter, I used my Steve Canyon jet fighter pilot helmet! It disappeared over the years, no matter, I couldn't fit in it now anyway! Thanks for posting! (I haven't thought about that space capsule in years!)

Glad to bring back some memories for you!. Yeah, cardboard from the late 50's is hard to find, most got thrown away over the years or destroyed. Really great accessory and looks good in any collection. Thanks for the note!, Brian

Awesome, Lionel did make a number of NON-train items back in the day to diversify their offerings and company. There is a strong following of collectors that seek out the oddball stuff like that. Neat stuff. Thanks for the note. Brian

I've heard a few times that there may have been a large quantity of these stored at Madison Hardware in one of the "warehouses" It may be that the water damage came from the fire in the 1980s. While the fire was not in one of the Madison storage areas, the water that was used to put out the fire cascaded down and damaged a fair amount of stored inventory.

Hey Derek, I suspected that, but did not want to speculate in this episode. It does make alot of sense and would explain the number of Mint sealed boxes with one sided water damage. Still looking for one of those master cartons!! Thanks, Brian

I most certainly will! I can’t get over how much even the reproduction from the 90s goes for these days, which is what I believe I would assemble were I to submit myself to such torture lol. While I’m not a collector myself of paper items (boxes for that matter) I do have an appreciation for it all!!
